Yeah Sammy was better on his own and Van Halen was as well that breakup devastated me I was a JR. In Highschool , VH was never the same their sound changed. RIP Eddie the most explosive 🧨 guitarist in history..........
This is absolutely true. Hard to understand today, but back in the late 70's and early 80's Van Halen was in a proverbial league of their own. Kind of similar to Prince in the 80's and 90's.
I've never seen anyone like them. I saw them in Houston in '82. Dave was talking his shit to some girls up front. Chick tried to give him $20 to see her later I guess. He said "You can't even look at it for that". Then from the middle of the floor somebody launches a black Allstar tennis shoe. Perfect arch seemed like it took forever as everyone kind hushed all at once. It hit's Dave right in the forehead. He never saw it coming with all the lights. He went down on one knee and got right back up. He said something like "That's ok I'm gonna fuck your girlfriend tonight. What a jerk to throw something when those guys are playing their hearts out. Probably the best show band with the most talented musicians ever. They had a charisma about them that was like no other. (Rusty)
Yep, saw every DLR era tour except the 1st, the VHI tour in 78. Charlotte NC General Admission! One year they played twice in 2 weeks, Feb 1st & 14th. Valerie was there on Valentines Day. Eddie gave her roses on stage. Saw them again in 2007, very 1st show with DLR back!
NOBODY made it look easier that Eddie Van Halen. I can't play his shit sitting down, never mind jumping and dancing around like he did while playing... and with that smile... There will never be another one like him
None of that shit existed back then but you could find plenty of old heads mournfully sobbing about the state of music at the time and the people who enjoyed it.
Absolutely!!! An integral and essential part of their sound. He was the perfect bass player for VH and way underrated too! Never got the credit he deserved. I feel bad for him the way he was treated at the end.
es indeed! Michael is a quarter of the Band!!! and that's a lot to be !!! I saw them live , doing their second album in Stamford, Connecticut 1977/78 and again in New York !! They were amazing!!! Later in 1984 they played in Montevideo,Uruguay!! I arrived a few days later, unfortunately, to visit, but I saw a video of the mighty "Van Halen" ! that a friend got !!! of that performance!!! and they arrived back alive and free to United States!!! Luckily 🤞🙏😂😢😅😊 !!! They were amazing and excelente!!! Long live V.H. !!!
. .. ... also, in Montevideo Uruguay they got a little "TOO Wild"!!! . .. ... and latter David Lee Roth was busted in Colombia, South America with "Coca Cola", so they cut the Tour short and came back to United States!! while they could !!! 😂😅😊 !!! 1984 Tour !!!
great footage! I was fortunate enough to work security on the 1984 tour...what a visual and aural experience! A moment in time that will never be duplicated 👍👍
VAN HALEN: I SAW ALL THE TOURS WITH ROTH FROM VAN HALEN 1 IN 1978 TO 1984 AND AGAIN IN 2013! I SAW 5150, OU812, F.U.C.K AND BALANCE WITH HAGAR. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER EDWARD VAN HALEN!!! RIP EDDIE THREE KEYS TO THE VAN HALEN SOUND: EDDIE’S GUITAR 🎸 ALEX’S SNARE DRUM 🥁 AND MICHAEL ANTHONY’S STRATOSPHERE BACKING VOCALS!!!
The haters don't have a problem with DLR in 1978-'84. But, I dropped an INSANE amount of money to see the "reunion" in L.A. when I still lived out there, and it was a giant pile of dog-sh!t. Between, DLR not singing a note (literally), and Eddie being so drunk, he didn't know what song he was playing, not to mention Wolfie on bass. I don't have a big problem with Wolfie, but he ain't Michael. It was no more of a reunion than it was a legitimate concert. So, the criticism the last 10yrs of the band was absolutely warranted. That said, no one...and I mean NO ONE could touch this band during these years. A lot of people don't realize that early KISS put on a show with this much drive and energy, as well. But, those days are all but forgotten because of the sh*t-show that band is today. But, I digress...
Imagine what it's like for Alex since Ed died. Those two worked and played together for a long time. There's talk about a Van Halen tribute but I don't think Alex will do it.
They were untouchable back then! Back then no band wanted to open for them because it didn't matter how good they were the crowd would shred them to pieces because they were there to see the mighty VH. Their concerts were a massive party back then, and often sold out the same day they were released. I got lucky and won my tickets over the radio for the 1984 Tour.
I just heard Eddie's first interview, and, it's unreal how good Eddie was. he played guitar for about 8 years when he recorded the debut album, which mostly was recorded live inside the studio. he used tube amps and pushed them to the edge, with modified input voltage. and after a maximum of 10 hrs, the amps gave up. the tubes had to be changed. but he kept on doing that because nothing sounded like it. one of the reasons for his unbelievable sound on the first album. the 2nd album it sounds a bit different but still out of this world. Eddie's impact on music history and rock guitar playing is unmatched. all of the other great guitar players who came after Eddie are there because Eddie started it. The God of the guitar. It's not about dumb speed anymore, it is about how you play your notes. and nobody plays as ass-kicking as Eddie did.
When I was a kid, I remember hoping that I would catch the live videos for Unchained, So This is Love and Hear About It Later on MTV or USA's Night Flight. Thanks for posting this. It brought back some awesome memories.
Remember this vid from MTV “so this is love” VanHalen in their prime, still get chills when Eddy goes to town So many of us guitarists were first baffled and blown away then disciples still playing till this day under the Van Halen influence
The best of the best. Indeed, VH was and still is the king of RnR. No one could touch the sound, stage show, or vocal gymnastics as good as VH. EVH was the guitar master of all universe. RIP Edward!
i always imagine im on stage with them when I watch this.... its so good to watch people have fun together in their element... what a time these guys must've had . RIP Eddie
This is just bad ass that's all there is to it.. My fav band of all time..Been to every show starting from Fair Warning on. The good ol days of partying in the parking lot with a group of us 7 hours before the show even started...LOL Forgot to mention big props to the individual who dug up this footage and shared it ..-->>>👍
The Greatest Rock-n-Roll Band ever!!!! I don't care what anyone says. They had it all and influenced rock and roll for decades more than any other Rock Band.
That is Historic, the two brother Jamming. They left out the Bridge in Change back then too. I wonder how much discussion there was to putting it on the Album, I noticed they left it out in the reunion shows with Wolfie on Bass and realized why, it just kind of passes by on the Album, Like atomic Punk, it's a Character. I did not think I would want to be in the front row for a DLR show. A Stripper with the best band in the World cr 1975-85 (and then again for a few years with Bissonette, Sheehan & Vai). Him leaving meant none of this stuff could be released, there is a excellent 1984 Tour video in the outdoors and day time that had to be buried. I would have loved to have had these and some other Bands Pro Shot shows I have seen on RU-vid available on VHS in the late 80's. My video store had Pompeii, that was it..... I watched that 100 times easy.
There's every other guitar in history and then there's The Mighty Eddie Van Halen. Hate saying it. I've really tried for decades to find another guitar player to match him.
This is just awesome. Dave sounds great! Actually hitting the notes! Then band was just killing it. Van Halen in top form. I wish this entire concert was released. So few early Van Halen concerts are filmed this well. Edward was an alien! Mind bending guitar. Just WOW
i think i read that at the oakland show they only filmed the 3 songs shown here. i think to save $ on film tape which was expensive. i believe they were filming these songs just to make a promo for the fair warning album (hence filming 3 FW songs). not to make a full concert movie. which obviously bites.
Exactly! Eddie and Michael were always on, but this shows Dave actually giving a great performance. He was dialed in. Dave could make or break a performance depending on how much improv he would do or if he actually remembered the lyrics and hitting the notes.
I use to open my windows of my bedroom after school and jam Van Halen. I played my drums to their sons. Two hours worth if I could get away with it. My high school years were 85-89.
Exactly it would have been the most amazing set. They'd have been flying through the air. Anyway we're still waiting for videos to come out alex is a stubborn son of a b****
Brother, I have a hard time watching this. I try not to get stuck in the past, but if your past is the 80`s it is very hard not to!! We lived and breathed Rock and Metal. We were an Army of brothers and sisters. Loud and proud.
Ha. I was 15 years old too but you got lucky to see VH as a first concert. Although my first rock concert was Rush Nov 1981 Moving Pictures tour at the Hollywood Sportatorium. My older Sister got talked into driving my 2 friends and I. She wasn’t a fan of Rush but a good sport. More into Journey.
I was 15 in 82. Saw them in Shreveport that year. Same deal, life changing. I got a "I saw van halen" bumper sticker and as soon as I got a car I wore it with pride that few others understood.
@@PaulC39 yeah man I can totally relate to your awesome experience, I was 12 and saw Rush in 84' Signals at the same venue and many more Great times out west at the Sporto!
A pretty good example of exactly how good they were and they really weren't that old. They had a machine gun drummer, a solid basist who could back up the vocals, an outrageous front man who didn't even have to sing that well to be a success, and of course the greatest living guitarist in the world.
@@robertschiffhauer1679 I've read so many things about the greatest guitarist in the world that I quit listening to them. Jimmy Page brought a lot to the table, but so did Jimi Hendrix, Chuck, Berry, etc. All of them have one thing in common, that they all did something unique. Personally, Clapton is the most overlooked one.
I saw this tour, Los Angeles Sports Arena, then a few weeks later at the San Diego Sports arena. As I understand, at the San Diego Sports arena show Jan Van Halen was there and That was the most amazing Guitar solo I believe he ever did, it was about 20+ minutes long and every second you were on the edge of your seat. I truly believe Eddie took it to the Next level with his father in the audience. I was so fortunate-(along with my friends), to have been there to witness Edward at the very TOP of his game for his POP. Miss you Ed-The best ever!
That's so cool that you saw them back to back. I tried to see them at the US festival but was too young to go. Was the set list the same or did they fool around a bit?
Luke I attended the SAN DIEGO SHOW also. The band was in top form they were making big-time money and the fans were there in droves. That guitar solo was epic some kind of stereo split. The sound was bouncing off the walls and inside my 🎉🎉brain
Edward was a true genius with the 6 string. The little things like the "inverted pick slide @7:12" to end this song was amazing. Who else could think of something like that? I don't know if there will ever be another guitarist to match him. Then again he set the road for thousands of killer guitarists to follow his many tricks and style. RIP Edward, Jimi ,Jeff, etc. etc. (Rusty)
^ 100%! I can say I lived to hear them and see them in the beginning and in their prime, and throughout their career. One of the best gifts to the music world in my opinion.
Brings back such great memories of hearing these guys for the first time in the 70's and buying all their albums and cassette's up to 1984. Just pure raw rock and roll , definitely the best years of VH!!!
@@tednugentlives That guy doesn't get as much recognition as he needs to get! You are correct... he was THE integral part of the vocals and those bass lines if you listen carefully... are insanely awesome!
