This astrophotography time lapse film features stunning sequences of the Milky Way center as it moves across breathtakingly beautiful and exotic landscapes. It was filmed over several months in 2016 and 2017. My son Ryan accompanied me throughout this journey helping with the camera equipment and providing great company on the many late nights we spent together filming this.
CHANNEL NEWS UPDATE:
If you have watched the HBO Max series on the Heaven's Gate Cult, premiering on December 3, 2020, you may have noticed that a short portion of this film appeared about 35 minutes into the first episode. So, if something looked familiar, that's why.

This time-lapse is surreal. I put the speed down to 0.25, connected it to a projector, and I'm watching it on my ceiling right now. It's like being in another world.

@ChicagoHOG27

It is even crazier to think that the vast majority of what you are seeing in films like these are stars within a spiral arm of our own galaxy. And most of those stars have solar systems. Then you read up on the Hubble Deep Field picture and how that was taken.... it really does put things into perspective that our greatest achievements pale in comparison to what lies "out there." I like to think that even though I cannot physically see all of those stars with the naked eye, these new cameras show us they exist, and we are being showered with little, tiny photons they emitted long ago. We are connected in spite of our distance! So yeah, we are all alone in this big ole place. Makes sense, right? 😎😉
@Brentolini23
@Brentolini23 4 года назад
Take this for thought, the universe is a few billion light years in diameter? Some of those stars probably died or exploded millions of years ago and the light we see is that old? And light travels about 200k miles a second... consider that it’s mind blowing

@Tarnway0412
@Tarnway0412 5 лет назад
If you're on land in a light polluted area but looking out over the ocean, you might see a bit more, but it still could be a problem. Obviously, it will be better if you are at the beach by a smaller community. A beach at a big city would probably not be so good. Here is a link to our most recent film from 2018. Take a look at the scenes from 47 seconds to about 1:11. They were filmed from an area by a small town with about 7300 people. It worked out pretty well. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rSWqY5XOKcs.html You should also be aware, that the Milky Way comes up from certain parts of the sky, depending on where you live. You want to be sure that when you are facing the ocean, you are looking in the correct direction, and at the right time. There is a very good app called Photo Pills which will give you all this information. Regards, BC

I'm not a religious man, but I find it hard not to feel some soul-stirring moments when I watch the stars, and especially through your medium. I had assumed it was done through some sort of automation while one slept, but even if so, you'd need to monitor it.(?) Its a mystery to me, but whatever the process, the result is impressive. Makes me feel like I'm indeed on a planet.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, we do have some similar scenes, particularly some of the ocean scenes with the boat lights are similar to those in our 2019 film- The Milky Way a Journey across Land And Sea. I particularly like your scene at 2:17 with the tree foreground. It was REALLY NICE! I also see you had a go at Yosemite Tunnel View with the unfortunate but predictable result of timelapse killer headlights. We gave up on that one for night work but instead took advantage of the great sunrises you can get from there and used a lapsed sunrise in one of our other films. Best regards, BC PS: This year, if we can get enough content for a new or hybrid film, we probably will do it in 8K as well.

Thanks Josh. It can be a bit challenging at first, but it gets easier and pretty routine after awhile. You'll pretty much end up using the same ISO, f stops, and shutter speeds everytime. The main thing is finding interesting foregrounds and backgrounds and the post processsing. On the otherhand, just when you think you've got it down, you end up doing something dumb like I did last weekend, shooting at night at Mt. Shasta. We were running 2 cameras and after a 2 hour time lapse at 1:30am, I realized I had one of the cameras set at f5.6 instead of f2.8. Damn!

Thanks for commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Of the things you see moving across the sky, most are actually airplanes, which can look like shooting stars, due to the time lapse effect on them. There are also satellites, which will tend to move more slowly. However, there are a few sequences which contain objects that are moving in very erratic ways which are neither airplanes or satellites and I certainly can't explain them. So, who knows!! Since you enjoyed this film, here is a link to our most recent film done in 2018. I used a very different color grade on it during the post production editing process to bring out the actual natural colors in the night sky- airglow- caused by excited atoms, molecules, and ions, in the upper atmosphere. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rSWqY5XOKcs.html Regards, BC

Incredible film. Ive been trying to work around the star eater issue on my a7sii. Do you have a tutorial on how you achieved this film? Thanks.
@Tarnway0412
@Tarnway0412 6 лет назад
First of all, thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. As regards the "star eater" issue, I feel that for time lapse, it's really an overrated problem. In fact, depending on what part of the Milky Way you are shooting, I'm not sure if it's even present. I haven't made a tutorial video, as I'm just reluctant to join the ranks of all the self appointed Internet experts out there and prefer to approach this with a certain degree of humility. However, if enough people requested it, it's something I might consider in the future. That being said, I have watched some tutorials from some pretty sharp people, and although I don't necessarily use the same techniques that they do, there are always things to be learned. I shot most of these sequences at very high ISO settings, ISO 12800 for 15-20 seconds, depending on the lens with regard to the 500 rule. I use Capture One Pro in post for all the preliminary color work and do tend to punch up the contrast and saturation in the sky, perhaps a bit more than others might and always use a separate masked adjustment layer for the sky. Perhaps this helps to bring out more of the fainter stars. I can't say for sure. Ian Norman over at Lonelyspeck.com has a recent article about "star eater" which says that the problem has apparently been solved by setting the camera to continous mode, rather than single mode. This does drop your raw bitrate down to 12 from its usual 14. I suspect that this wouldn't really be any problem at all, however. So, if you're concerned, that looks like a good fix. As regards to shooting at the high ISOs like I do, the only downside might be loosing some of the subtle star colors due to clipping. For a moving film, I consider this a total non factor, however for people doing stills for printing, etc., this could be a consideration. Theoretically, it shouldn't really matter if the ISO is higher, due to the sensor invariance of the R2 sensor, but I still think it may make some difference, when it comes to "star eater." We are planning on starting a new multi month, multi location, time lapse project next month and I do plan to play around a bit and compare results from continous mode to those I get from single, just to see if there is much of a difference. For that project, we'll be using two A7RIIs, and one A7SII, and I'm also curious to see if there is any difference in the way each camera responds. With any luck, that film should be up on the channel in September. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. Regards, BC

Really nice work here. I think I recognize a few locations: the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, Mono Lake near Lee Vining, and I suspect some of the lake scenes were near June Lake. What equipment did you use for the motion stuff?
@Tarnway0412
@Tarnway0412 6 лет назад
+Raptorman0909 Thanks! You've got a good eye. All correct except for the lake. For motion, in a few scenes, I used a Genie Mini with a tilt bracket. But, for the most part, I do my motion in post using the Ken Burns effect of pan, tilt, zoom, etc. I find this gives me much more control over how I want the scenes to flow together. At times, occassionally, I'll use sliders- Dynamic Perception- but none were used in this film. Again, I like adding most of my motion in the post process.

Really great work my friend! I’m planning on making my first attempt at night time-lapse soon. I wonder if you’d share any tips? I was wondering if you have a general set of settings you use to capture such stunning detail. What kind of intervals you use? Aperture wide open? Shutter speeds? (Anything else I should consider, etc.) Thank you for sharing your work, very inspirational!
@Tarnway0412
@Tarnway0412 6 лет назад
All great questions and I'll be happy to try to answer them as best I can. As regards apertures, lower is always better. I would suggest trying to use lenses with at least f2.8- lower better still. Right now, we are using 3 cameras: one has a 28mm f2, another an 18mm f2.8, and the third a 55mm f1.8. As for intervals, that can vary from lens to lens. There is a rough rule of thumb for astro called the 500 rule. You take the focal length of your lens and divide by 500. This will roughly determine how many seconds of exposure you can use before stars start looking like small flat lines instead of being roughly round. With the 55mm lens, this would be 9 seconds of shutter time- I use 8, So, for that camera, I would use an interval of 12-15 seconds. Longer is fine too, as you can cover greater Milky Way movement over longer periods of time with less exposures needed. With the 18mm lens, I use 20 second exposure time and 25 second intervals, and with the 28mm lens, I use 15 second time with 20 second intervals. You may have noticed, that particularly with the 18mm lens, the 20 second time is well below what would be allowed under the 500 rule, that is because I regularly do a lot of zooming in post production so I need that extra wiggle room. A zoomed image would show the star flattening, whereas the unzoomed one wouldn't. Also, when setting intervals, keep in mind that you want to leave some time for camera buffering between the shots. The next point to be aware of is focusing. It is critical that the cameras be at perfect infinity focus. I do this by either prefocusing before dark, or focusing on a bright star after dark. I use auto focus- some will do it manually. It just depends in your comfort kevel. You should always take a test frame at night and zoom into the stars in camera to check your focus. Don't worry if the stars look a litttle flat when doing this hyper zoom, this is normal. For locating the Milky Way, there is a great app for IOS and Android called Photo Pills. It will show you the time and position of the Milky Way core even months in advance from a particular location. I highly recommend it! Oh, I almost forgot- very important- always shoot raw, never JPEG. Hopefully, this will give you enough information to get you started. Please feel free to check back in and let me know how you're progressing. At the moment, we are filming a new time lapse project, which will be filmed over a 4 month period in 5 states. Hopefully, it will be finished and on the channel in September. Regards, Barry Chall

@Tarnway0412 5 лет назад
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Most of the movement is done in post production using "the Ken Burns effect," which is a pan/tilt/zoom by way of the video editing software. There are a few scenes where we used some hardware motion control devices from Dynamic Perception & Syrp. In the scenes where the camera is moving up the trees, we used a pair Syrp Genie Minis with a tilt bracket. I think you'll really enjoy doing night time lapses!

@Tarnway0412 5 лет назад
The lenses used in the film were an 18mm Zeiss Batis f2.8, and a Sony 28mm f2.0. In our latest film shot in 2018 we also added a Sony 55mm f1.8. That 55mm added a whole new dimension to the kind of scenes we can do and I plan on using it regularly for all future films. As an example, it was used in the scene starting at 1:12 of the new film. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rSWqY5XOKcs.html I'll look forward to seeing your films.
