I do exactly this. Before I go to bed I want to know my kitchen is clean. Dishwasher empty. Washing and drying put away. Coffee pot on timer. Ready for the day. When I leave for holiday I leave the house spotless with fresh sheets on the bed. Shopping delivery ordered for a few hours after we get home. Washing done before I leave to come home. So much less stress. I want to know what I’m coming home to is calm and serene. The difference it makes is massive.😊

Good video! Two old sayings from my childhood (I'm 69) popped in to my head while I was watching you - "Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today" and "All that you do, do with your might. Things done by halves are never done right." I think the older generation (yep! I recognize that I AM the older generation now, but I mean my parents and grandparents) was way ahead of us in lots of areas. Resetting a room at any time is very beneficial to all in the house! AND, if we can teach it to all in the house - wow! Now I'm off to practice what I just preached! LOL!! Again, great video! Thanks!

I like this way - it's also a way of being in a state of gratitude and being thankful. You're helping and sending love to future you. Like future morning you who can wake up and have limited visual clutter and no dishes to wash because night time you thought - nope - not leaving those - no I don't want to - but I know I really enjoy waking up and having my first coffee in a fairly ordered space - so I'm doing that for me because I deserve it. Then morning you comes into a lovely ordered space because you deliberately pushed past the want just to go to bed and leave it for the morning - and morning you has an instant smile and a lovely feeling of being worth the effort and content to enjoy the space and feeling happy and taken care of 😊

I work in healthcare. You HAVE to reset things and places for the next shift. You HAVE to put things back where they belong after you use them. I didn't learn this at work, I was always tidy, so it helped a lot, especially toward the end of the shift, when everybody is tired. It's a no-brainer at this point.

I disagree. I was always an extremist tidy and organized person. These were not the mindsets I had to accomplish that for 30+ years. I did it by obsessively compulsive self-condemnation and hyper perfectionism. I'm extremely organized and tidy, but Erica's mind frames, perspectives, thought processes, and development over time (on this channel) have been very valuable for me in putting to rest the condemnation and living in peace even during times I could not clean or keep up with the house "perfectly."

When I was growing up my mother would say whenever she left a room she would turn around and look at it and admire it. I find myself doing the same thing. When raising my children, I would tell them it was time to finish what they were doing and clean up. I would set the timer to finish what they were doing and set it again for clean up. Another thing I used to say was never go to bed and leave a messy house in case the firemen came. Now that I’m older, I tell myself to tidy up in case the paramedics come!

@@thatswhatisaid8908 I was taught clean as you cook and yes, sometimes you can burn food if the timing is wrong. If that's the case, soaking the mixing bowls/pots as you cook/eat can be the helpful part to make clean up faster and eliminate scrubbing hardened food on pots/spatulas at the end. If you do find the extra minute inbetween stirring/cooking, THEN use the moment to wash an item or put away spices and wipe the countertop to lighten the load at the end.

@@thatswhatisaid8908 In that case it's more important to stay at the stove and just concentrate on the cooking. We use timers as reminders for oven. If cooking on stove, lower heat setting and go slower. My son has burned a frying pan beyond use and melted a spatula. You're not alone. Clean as you go with something else that's not as time sensitive as stove top cooking. Like if you've put food in oven to bake for 30 minutes, you could clean your cutting board and mixing dishes while waiting. Safety while cooking is important so clean as you cook with discretion. Wow, I’m just realizing that my dad instilled some of this in us as kids. I could have a snack and finish it while watching tv with him, and as he pauses the show to let’s say go the bathroom, which was through the kitchen, he would take my plate and cup with him. It helped make the coffee table tidy while we watch tv and the room would be a little more reset before bed time. I try and do this today where if I’m leaving the room, I’ll take something to the kitchen or get my clothes ready for a shower that I’m going to have after an episode of tv. I, too, can see that when I don’t do those tiny tidy times, it becomes a lot larger of a project. It makes it feel tougher to feel like a space is clear and open. It’s a decision or two now that won’t have to be made in multiples later.

Sue Wolfe- I have always made my bed in the morning and taught my children to do the same thing. It's not too early to start that reset. It doesn't take that long and sets the tone for the whole day. Individual responsibility can be taught: games picked up by the kids instead of you having to do it, making your job bigger. Perhaps giving privileges after responsibility? It works! 👌👍😉❤️❤️

@@thatswhatisaid8908 Thank you so much for your kind comment. It takes does take time, but it is so worth getting to this point and I promise that most people can do this if they work at it and really want to get to this stage in life. As Erica says it takes time, energy, patience and commitment. However, the payoffs for getting to this point are: More free time for joy and to spend with friends and family, less mess to be distracted by, better organisation knowing where most things are in your home, saving money not over stocking or re-buying unnecessarily, less frustration with others over untidiness, comfort to enjoy your home and the spaces in them, clearer mindset and ability to think things through more easily, less distractions etc. I could go on, but I’m sure you and others reading this will have got the point already. 😊

@@bethstratton3391 it's invaluable to have the advantages listed in black and white, though! Did you have any trouble trying to stay decluttered? I'm going through an awful stage of buying more (supposedly better, more useful and occasionally replacement,) things. 🤯
@bethstratton3391
@bethstratton3391 Месяц назад
@@thatswhatisaid8908 It’s a process. I’ll give you my take: 1. I decided what needed to be kept from each room. 2. Decluttered the rest. 3. Sorted out and organised the remaining stuff into categories. 4. Placed the stuff in the rooms it was actually must appropriate for it to be in. 5. Thought about the ‘homes’ for each item - a permanent place where that item would live or be stored. 6. Rearranged the space so the items would fit and ONLY bought containers if absolutely necessary for storage purposes (because containers can become clutter themselves if unnecessary). I didn’t buy containers until I had measure the space and thought long and hard what was suitable and durable (be careful you can get into a loop if constantly replacing containers which is wasteful and expensive). 7. Do a maintenance program of cleaning and repairing items. Always putting items back in their place when I’ve finished using them. 8. I only replace items if really necessary, to replace a non repairable item; and it is cost effective to do so and if the items will get used. I never shop on a whim I shop it with intentionality. I never, buy just in case items or stockpile as it is unnecessary cost and often leads to future waste. I only buy the items I need when I go into shops and don’t waste time looking at all the other items, so I don’t get drawn to buying without thought. Otherwise, you end up with a whole load of unnecessary stuff creeping back in to your home. I hope this helps you.

It's actually lifechanging! Setting everything to right, especially catching up on dishes every single day after I eat breakfast, makes me feel like I have my life together. We do our best to clean up after dinner but I know I can't trust myself to be consistent with this habit in the evening (especially in the winter when it's dark outside) so I make it a daily priority to reset the kitchen during the daytime when I haven't burned up any of my limited energy yet.

I Love this video because I definitely do the same and it’s been such a mindset shift for me . I think of it as setting things up for my future self when I put things where they go and prepare the coffee the night before. . Instead of it being reactive and something I ever so slightly resent having to do, I think of it as an act of love, and then I make sure to take time to appreciate my past self. The next time I use the space again, feeling love and appreciation. It’s such a better way to live. And then I often say “thank you past Christian” when I walk into a room or when I get up in the morning and environment is how I like it. I use this concept in my workshops when I work with kids. A we hang tape off the tables so it’s easier to grab when we’re sculpting later on, I call it setting up up for success . We set up our studios so that when we come back in ourselves, will be excited to see how it is. Please pardon my typos as I try to comment on my teeny tiny phone.🥰✨

The thing that helped me the most was not collecting anything... My boundary for books is my cube shelving, but I've been too broke to buy much anymore. My ex has a collection of hundreds of DVDs that he rarely used due to having all of the streaming services, but he keeps them out of comfort. His other collection was a bunch of magazines, books, clothes, and a hobby. I left because he never made room for me, and everything was more important than myself/the relationship. If you have a partner or a family, see what would make them happiest. Whatever you do as a couple or a family is more important than having stuff taking up space. You need room for activities! That's where the memories are 💜💜💜

Good shift of mindset! But I even go a step further, I don’t allow myself to make a mess. If I drink from my glass I carry it around, when I’m done it goes in the dishwasher- same with plates eg, while I’m cooking I already put stuff back immediately. My kids get a game out of the stack? Good! But those they don’t use go right back in the cabinet. Is their project unfinished or have they just lost interest, which is fine? Either it gets put away, or.. you get it 😉 this is brainless for my family by now, a well cemented habit. Your kids are old enough to act like that too, and especially being neurodivers I find it important to make every effort to trick one’s flaws and use the benefits that brings. To me this is plain selfcare, I don’t deserve it to spend lots of time tidying. Why create a mess at all? Not a single benefit! It is as if I extended my actions just as far as to where it is really completed, and that’s not when I got the book from the shelf, but when the others are put back 🙂
