There have been so many comments about asking if it works with a case 😂 all of you did not make it to 3:05 in the video where I clearly show and state it works with basic cases.
@@iamyourfuture808if its not a fat “military grade” drop proof case, which is double the size of apple cases, with random pop sockets, or fidget toys built in… you’ll be fine.
@@iamyourfuture808amazon case, cassidy minimal ones, rhinoshield minimal/solidsuit/clear, mous minimal, basically any siliconecase , pretty much just and minimal/modern/or slim case. soo not bulky otter boxes
This looks pretty awesome! Kinda covers all the bases... - 1 tb Storage ✅ - Port for wireless mic ✅ - USB-C PD for battery bank ✅ Now, if they could take that, and build it into an ergonomic grip, with a mount for an anamorphic, it would be perfect.
Pledged for the 2TB one with hub. Forgot about the ergonomic grip reality. Like that option too. Hmmm. I'll have to think if there are any ways to modify this. :)
@@BCE-111 Yeah, I 3d printed a case for some other drives and hubs, but they were still a little clunky, this one is so much smaller, that I think it might be possible to create a compact system where you just slide the phone into it. I think there was another project that was trying to create a grip of some sort...Michael did a video on that, but I don't know its current status it's actually pretty cheap to get this lexar one though, and its useful to have a 2TB drive even without its phone use.
@@MaximoJoshua I have an Adonit grip that I like as it has a bluetooth shutter release right on it. But I don't think it would work with this straight up with the hub. It is open along the bottom where the C port is though, so I can probably use the SSD itself although the C connector is offset. Was trying to think of different ways to make it work. But as mentioned just having so small a 2TB SSD is valuable in itself. Right now I have 2 2TB SAMSUNG T7 Shield drives and one 4TB one. Paid $100 and $120 for the 2TB ones now selling for $180. And paid $230 for the 4TB one now selling for $315. So I'm good. :) Looking forward to receiving it to see how it works. Hope it can maintain continual longer shoots without dropping frames. Same specs though as the SAMSUNG T7 Shield drives.
@@BCE-111 there was one project by quipdesign, which was a cinema grip, seems similar to this... in the past, I wanted the hub to have an HDMI, but now with remote monitoring, I don't need that nearly as much.
I purchased a iPhone 15 Pro Max last week and found your channel while looking for a setup that would not block the magsafe connection to allow for the Gimbal connection. The timing of your video was perfect. Just pledged/purchased the 1TB with the media hub. Feel confidant this goes true. Nice to see Lexar get ahead of the market. I suspect there will be similar products out soon.
@@thebugasproject Agreed - likely paid a small premium price to buy it this month - but had to upgrade and enjoying the phone which I'll likely keep for 3+ years. My old iPhone XR was lagging terribly and needed to be replaced. iPhone 16 specs (if true) - look to be a bigger screen for the Pro Max 6.9 instead of 6.7.
SSD + Velcro 😃 I’ve Velcro’d the back of my iPad and MacBook, so I can stick an SSD the back of it or a portable power bank I can now freely carry around the devices whilst they are transferring data or charging off the power bank 😊
No it needs to be better. It needs to be attached to a battery that supports your port better so over time it won't destroy the port. Like a bottom slip on that used your frame.
I keep hitting your videos Michael and enjoying them. Though doing this puts food on the table for you and your family, you are one of the very few that come across like you’re doing a late night infomercial. Or just sounding like you don’t even believe a thing that’s coming out of your mouth. I hope you can appreciate my compliment and what it does for people that rely on these reviews before they buy something that may be very expensive for them. I thank you for that sir. I’m fascinated with what Lexar is doing in this segment which is rapidly picking up speed. I think this product appears to be an impressive piece of engineering and for what it does, will be a game changer for so many consumers. I almost hit the buy button after the first minute of your video, but got to thinking how very much I like to leave a case on my phone at all times. I actually drop mine from time to time. So I’ll stick to the slightly more cumbersome method of larger and heavier (slightly) components with clamps and wires until such a time they make this kind of amazing small solutions that are usable with nutty persons such as myself that want to keep their case on. Again, thanks for your reviews and allowing us to see what gear you claim to use frequently, which suits my tastes very well. You give some great ideas to change some of my current stuff around and based on your recommendations, I think there’s integrity and good taste in your choices. Cheers brother and make hay!
I just got the 15 pro max and I’ve been following you for a while before. Inspired me to get the pro max. I’m a photographer and I’m trying to get into making content now. Thanks.
Cool! But nothing beats HAGIBIS m.2 SSD enclosure. It’s MagSafe, it’s can allow powering iPhone with additional type-c input and HAGIBIS has version with additional usb input for wireless microphone systems (3 type-c ports total!!!).
Have you seen this in action? I just see the two port one reviewed. I like the MagSafe idea especially when you can add a fan on top for shooting in the heat.
If I were you Michael, I’d ask who makes the drive? Is it proprietary ? Or is it mass market? The reality is that’s footage and it’s precious. You don’t entrust all your work to untrusted, untested, unknown drive resource simply because you like the form factor. That form factor has me thinking it’s the Western Digital SN770M NVMe drive. It’s small enough to be that. And if it’s that drive … it’s got a 90% fail rating on Amazon. I’ve had a few of those small form factor 1 tb drives and I’ve never had one that actually worked. Except for the Samsung packaged drives.
I wonder: -Freewell Sherpa filmmaking case and extendable grip kit with magnetic mist filter. -This Kickstarter Lexar SSD with USB port. -Hollyland Lark M2 wireless mic and only the USB-C receiver port. I wonder if this set up would/could be a good, small/minimal, and fast iPhone setup…
Michael, thank you for these videos. Just purchased your IPhone film making guide, I am grateful for the discount, totally new to making video on IPhone, so hope to learn much more from you. Best wishes from Scotland.
Thanks, Michael, this hits the spot. Hoping the improved 16 Pro mics will let me omit an external mic for 3-minute song performance clips and use a mini setup as described here.
Thanks for this, that’s amazing. Which audio wireless mic setup do you prefer for run/gun setups? I bought the first rode go and sent it back as it kept dropping connection, but I imagine it’s improved by now and I’ve heard the DJI ones have issues also? Im travelling soon for a shoot and am trying to find a way to not bring all my production gear for this one so looking at making the iPhone do the ‘street-stuff’. Looking through the rest of your vids for advice on setup etc. I doubt these kickstarters will be ready sadly before I go or I’d def order them now.
I don’t understand why there isn’t any MagSafe HDD solution available. So the HDD clicks on the phone with MagSafe (magnets) short USB C connector cable and ready for action..
A MagSafe SSD yes, that sounds very useful. Specifically a HDD wouldn’t work because it has moving disks that are affected by magnets (but I’m sure you meant SSD, just nit picking sorry 😄)
im confused so iphone does allow external storage ? over usb c? so you can live record to this? You can take photos and it saves to the ssd and not the phone? iphone 16 conmpatabile? couldnt somone make a case with this built in and maybe a small battey and or something
Michael,, I cannot see any indication in this vidéo, as to how the Lexar hub or ssd is attached to the back of your phone, can you please give an indication thanks,, I does not appear to be attached using magsafe.
Hi, Finally a real minimalist solution. One question - in which part of the video can I see the setup appears on the thumbnail of this video - the mic plugged in but without the cage?
Does this work with shooting non ProRes footage or only ProRes footage? Like will I be shoot & save directly to the SSD or can I only save directly to SSD when shooting in ProRes? Thanks in advance!
Thanks just placed a order for one, best setup thus far. Question, would the hdd & hub be damaged for longterm use in landscape filming? going to the iphone 16 and I'm wondering with our right hand on top of the hdd & hub it could weaken the USB-C port.
Great product 👍🏻. btw, how’s the heat problem going with this? (most of the M.2 with case ssd for iphone out in the market have heat problem during recording, as i know)
2:24 "adds to the drop protection".. If you drop your phone with that plugged into the bottom.. You're gonna have a bigger problem than a couple scratches.. That USB, will break off that thing... I use a Samsung T5 drive and tiny cable with my 16 P.M.
I really don't get why big companies like Lexar are doing kickstarters. They have the money to launch the product. Getting pre-sales on kickstarter just seems scummy when the platform is meant for startups and small companies.
@@Agent77X Really? I thought Lexar was considered a "major" brand. I had no idea they had no employees and make less than 500K/year. Where did you learn that?
The design looks awesome and is something I've been waiting for since the 15 pro came out, but Lexar scares me. I used their cards in the past on my professional cameras and always had corrupt files.
Everyone of those who promoting the small ssds for for iphone , always demonstrate only cage set up with , but no one of them hasen't says how to apply it for a mobile gimbal
I agree with you! This is the best minimalist solution yet! I also think it's just a matter of time till someone creates an SSD iPhone case with ports. 🤔 Great video! Keep up the great work! 👍🏾
i wish they had a minimal setup that allowed you to use a case. doesn't work for me as i don't want to remove my case every time i want to film, but still dope that these kinds of things are being made!
@@initialfocus weird I guess i can’t find that shot! I see how it can work with the long cable, but the more minimalist setup doesn’t seem like it would, at least with the Peak Design case, but maybe I just can’t tell from the videos and photos.
I see now these are the same as the SAMSUNG T7 Shields I use. From their FAQs. "What are the read and write speeds? What type of cable connectivity does it use? Lexar Professional Go Portable SSD with Hub features read speeds up to 1050 MB/s and write speeds up to 1000 MB/s. It uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 high-speed interface for connectivity."
This SSD looks great and the early bird discount is tempting. I get that Lexar is sponsor of the video but any additional information on this thing? Does this overheat like crazy? Is the speed good enough and on par with larger form factor ssd? Is this a valid solution to use on a computer (it can be very useful to use on a laptop without cables dangling)
Hasn’t overheated on me and I just got back from a couple day trip where I filmed A TON with it. SSD seems on par for speeds with all over fast drives now days. I loved using it directly from the phone to my iPad to my Mac. Seamless small and quick. Sponsor or not if there were any major red flags I would mention it in the video. The only caution I will throw out is I’ve only had it for about a month so all I can honestly say is so far it’s my favorite iPhone SSD setup so far.
This has been the exact reason why I have not used an external hard drive because I always record with my iPhone but I also have a microphone plugged into it and would regular heart drives you cannot use the microphone
