I think you would be fine . You’d live lol ….. it’s all in your head that you think you can’t live without social media . Try it . I quit most social media platforms seven years ago and I’m so glad I did. I just have RU-vid now for work and some entertainment. 😅but limit my consumption.
Not well. I mean you get a nice long break and no pay from RU-vid. Maybe you need to change your job to prevent burnout. Right now you all are number one, but no one is trusting RU-vid as much because they don't know if AI is taking over or people are the real deal.
Stepping back from social media can offer a valuable opportunity to recharge, reconnect with the present moment, and focus on personal well-being. It allows time to reflect, cultivate deeper relationships offline, and regain a sense of balance in life. I believe these reasons are the core values of The Minimalists and minimalism. You're right your website, audio podcasts, books, and plus your Netflix documentaries are enough. I will be joining you guys on your pause from social media. Excited to share my results with you guys in San Diego on your free tour this summer!!! 🤙🏾
I fully quit social media half a year ago and I’ve never been happier, I even started carrying a field note book to write down stuff. Mainly my anxiety went down by maybe 90% and in general I am more able to focus, read a ton, enjoy more hobbies, work out without having to scream to the world that I worked out. I just do it now for myself and no one else and I gotta say, it is very nice. Makes me remember the 90s.
I do not consider youtube a social media but I do come here every now and then! i like to listen to playlist here and podcast like the minimalists or yoga classes:) It is also a place where I find a lot of resources to learn japanese. The way I have been using Yotube is by only using it on a desktop and I do have a youtube limit app as well to not get sucked in. Finally I have been trying to teach my algorithm to recommend me more stuff I want like music, science fiction book critics and workouts, I do this by asking it by hand to not recommend me certain videos )on the 3 dots that appear on the lower side of the thumbnails) and it was been super helpful in the terms of not giving me inflamatory content or radicalazing content. It is almost like hand curated but it took me a while to achive this :S @@st8893
Thank you! That’s a great answer. I enjoy You Tube as well for certain things. I hesitated to say “I’ll give up social media” cause I do enjoy learning. My personal rule is I can watch You Tube if I am on the eliptical or treadmill 😂 I watch a lot of minimalism, decluttering type content and it always inspires me.
While we are pausing social media for the rest of the year, The Minimalists Podcast will still be available on RU-vid, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts, with Maximal episodes available on Patreon.
This is awesome. I quit social media at the beginning of the year. After a month, I realized I did not miss it at all. I even cleaned out my YT subscriptions to only those that benefited forward progress to my well being. Keep up the great and intentional work that you guys do 👍🏼
As long as you're still on RU-vid - the only place where we follow you - I think this is an inspired decision. I'm thinking about it myself. Social media - in general - has become toxic. The disconnect between what people say and what's really going on in their lives... it's not okay. It makes others feel "less than" if their lives don't measure up to the happy-happy posts & pix they're seeing on social media. Bravo for making this move!
I have been waiting for this to happen! So excited to see where this decision takes The Minimalists! It has been 2.5 years without social media for me as an individual and business. Best decision for both roles!
@@ErinbaMy guess is either email marketing, blogging, paid advertising, or offline marketing. Only things you can really do if you're not doing social media or video. And seeing as they didn't bother to answer this is my two sense.
Makeup Artist! I use email marketing, physical promotional flyers for events and treat my word of mouth referrals from current clients with thoughtful gifts.
It’s fascinating that I had the belief that my business will fail without social media. It was one of those beliefs that are not obvious but it’s the reason why I fear letting go of social media - it’s ridiculous - a platform can’t possibly decide if I’m successful or not - yet another lie we believe. Thank you for blazing the trail to new ways / doing things differently. I stopped IG, FB and Twitter. I’ll keep working on LinkedIn because the energy is different and more professional and I enjoy it but I’m stopping tracking my engagement and creating what I love. Thank you!
You know your audience...we want Minimalism in all areas of life, and that includes social media and how we spend our time. I just cut off IG last week because I realized it was taking too much of my time and it didn't help me achieve the goals I wanted for the year. I'm all for your trial!
Absolutely intrigued by this!!!! Later to the game with social but more attached with time spent on it. Been considering diving off for an extended break. Need one for work but not the others. Will continue to listen to podcast like I have been weekly on Spotify. Not been on social much anyway lately so not consuming your short form content. I prefer longer form. Excited for you!!!!
If you guys are quitting social media, I'd love for you to allocate that time to a longer newsletter, more consistent! I love reading and learning. Newsletters are great for that, plus I give you permission to send me emails, versus you just popping up on my feed randomly.
This was so timely for me. I decided to take a break from Facebook (the only social media I use) a few days ago. I had previously given up Facebook for about six months earlier in 2023, and kind of started to wonder why I went back. I am on board with this for me personally, and I wish you all the best of luck with your social media fast. I listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, and will continue to do so!
Awesome team. Do what's best for you. I've recently taken a step back from the social media sites that haven't been serving me well and have found a lot of peace in that. I know where they are if I need them. And hopefully your followers will find you via your podcasts or patreon if they need you :) (I know I will!)
Can you not??????? I look forward to this during my many hours of nursing my baby everyday 😂😭 I will listen to the podcast but I really enjoy engaging watching you talk more 😔
I quit’Twitter’ prior to inception of X, it was getting so toxic. I get on Facebook to connect quickly with family and friends, and don’t spend such time. As for You Tube, I try to keep it to my interests and, after some experience, usually can tell what is just sensational crap.
Just about ready to turn in and sell antique glassware from my grandma and mom. Downsizing to a nomad life in a pickup and campershell. Im 64, and cannot and will not pay the rents now.Can you interview a top dealer about the market, getting decent price how to approach, etc?
This is really interesting! We are about to launch a software, we love. And I just want to find the ppl that will also love it. I think that it will be enough (in terms of resources to cover living expenses and continuing development) and give more, spiritually. My own social media I can stop, but I will need to use social media to find some interesting hubs online. But I want to tap into less general and more authentic spaces.
I'm all for it and I believe you'll be better off with the break. Should you all decide not to return, that's perfectly ok too. I'm slowly moving toward deleting my social media accounts.
I think you’ll all feel incredible relief and peace. Pausing social media will be like opening all the doors and windows on a fresh clear Spring day to let all the old toxic air out ! It will NOT harm your mission but will provide, calm, freedom, space and peace. Just do it.
I don’t do Insta, Twitter, Tik Tok. I barely peruse FB anymore, I enjoy memories popping up when my kids were little. That’s about it. I am so grateful I never got into posting shorts and Tik Toks. I believe it is like crack cocaine to these people and they literally come to rely on and get addicted to the income they generate from it. It is like being a druggy and a drug dealer all in one. Have to do it. Can’t afford not to. Abstaining would be throwing money out the window, money is good, need money! Ughhh Gollum! What a quagmire. No thanks. Simple times, old fashioned ways for me. I don’t think my mind and soul could survive being SM reliant. Just thinking about it all makes me want to go for a walk in the woods with my dog.
I hope you guys don't cancel your RU-vid channel because you are one of the few educative, relaxing, and therapeutic channels that I follow on a regular basis. You guys can leave Instagram and Twitter, but not RU-vid please.
Wait, I took a break for school. What happened? Does this mean no more minimalist program or just not with video? It looks like there is still an audio podcast uploaded 4 days ago?
I enjoy being able to put my interest into the "search" here at youtube and that is how I found you...I don't search podcasts...Sorry that it is effecting you personally and it will be to your viewers detriment ! I left Twitter (X)...
I gave up Facebook, instagram about 5 years ago. If I need to be in contact with someone then I can call or text them. I was an adult before social media so it does not affect me, I do not miss them or need them. When my streaming yearly contract ends I will not be renewing. I go to the library, where you can borrow books or you can stay there and read the book or magazines there, you can borrow videos, use their computers and internet.
I love the library, too! I do watch RU-vid and am selective about what I consume. Intrigued to let social go for an extended time. Have done so in the past for a month or so. Fun to do it for longer and see what arises and the space/freedom that come from it. More attention/ intention on life in front of my face.
Great. I am struggling to quit as I started social media at 14. But I am determined. I get a lot more anxious from the work I am not doing due to being unproductive and being on social media. It is indeed fake connection.
I absolutely LOVE this. As a business owner, I’ve struggled with this for years because I’ve wanted to quit social media for my own happiness, but am afraid I won’t stay relevant if I don’t consistently post everyday, but it feels like my posts don’t really bring people in, it’s overwhelmingly just Google searches for coffee shops in the area or word of mouth. Anyways, I have justified it for long enough but I think this is the push I need to just delete it, I’ve literally come to hate it and be upset with myself because I get so sucked into reels and shorts for like thirty+ minutes at a time. I feel like I’m wasting my life away. Thank you for your content! I hope whatever platform you choose to migrate to will be free for people to use just like social media is ✨ I think Reddit is good for that, like discussions and things
Yep. You've come to the right conclusion. I already know the good coffee places in my neighborhood. If I'm traveling, I'll google it. I don't care about a cafe's social media. I just don't.
Go for it. If people shop for you locally they won't follow your social media sites. Honestly, my hair dresser spends hours on hers and I've never ever looked at it.
My vote is to accommodate diverse formats: keep YT for individuals who processes information visually, and the podcast for those who are more auditory.
I quit Instagram & Facebook a year & a half ago, it’s been the best thing for me! I don’t miss the apps at all. I only call & text on my phone, I have the YT app & Pinterest & that is it. I even quit twitter & snapchat even longer ago, probably about 2 & a half years ago. I highly recommend it 😀 I just live my life, don’t compare myself to anyone & quite frankly I don’t care what anyone is upto! 😂 it’s Freedom!!
Always do what makes you happy and quit what doesn't... Good choice guys, I did the same about 2 years ago, never looked back and never missed it at all..... 😊❤
I’d like to agree, as RU-vid is the only platform I use. I have Premium (no ads), History turned off (no recommendations), Shorts turned off, and Auto Play turned off. But in some ways I find RU-vid to be perhaps more dangerous, because I’m able to justify spending time here for the sake of learning, or growth, even though I often come here to numb out, to cure boredom, or simply come without intentionality. RU-vid Shorts are no different than TikTok or IG Reels. It’s all an algorithm, and the platform is designed to steal our attention. I have tried to be as intentional as possible with RU-vid, and yet still find myself sucked in.
Per Definition it is ☝🏽 RU-vid is considered a social media platform because you can share content with “followers” (subscribers) and foster communities through interaction and engagement
I deleted all my social media back in June. At first, I felt suicidal, overwhelmed, panic, fear, anxiety, bored, tired and sleeping more, even unbothered more. Then I started to feel relief, glad, pride, happiness. Now, I just see 99.9% of social media as pointless, competitive, false and yes, even boring. Then I discovered Reddit and I realised that tbh, RU-vid was also social media. As was Mumsnet or dating websites and discord if you use it to scroll rather than asking questions.
Did it in 2018, never looked back. Didn't even struggle with the decision either when I was spending so much time on them. I just was done the moment I was able to get enough perspective to see myself scrolling like a zombie, refreshing and doing it again 😣 Plus, let's admit it, it's not very minimalistic, it uses data (both telecom resources and data centers) for little benefits, causes anxiety, and encourages, by design, over consumption and the capitalistic model's excesses. So good on you guys, I'm sure you will benefit greatly from it!!
I'm a head of you. Got rid of facebook (6 months ago), was the last one I dropped. Have not missed any of them. Now am able to form my own opinions without someone trying to influence me otherwise. Good luck on your challenge.
It's being able to form your own opinions with everyone else trying to influence you that makes your opinions and beliefs stronger (in my opinion) Either way, good job 😊
This was a great episode! I've been reducing my use of social media, taking it off my phone, opting out of groups and following people, and now only viewing online for a few minutes a day to see what my adult children are doing. I'll continue to minimize my need.
Bravo! I've always admired your commitment to the various experiments you've conducted over the years: no wifi at home, no phone, no email, MINIMALISM!!, etc. It's hugely inspiring, and a rare quality today. Especially considering the forces conspiring to pull us away from our intentions.
I gave up social media 4,5 year ago. I have been only on RU-vid, which was also a lot from time to time but lately I spend around 15-30min a day on it. I also have my phone turned off during the day... I am reconnecting with life. I am so glad you are embarking on this great journey as well. Have a great time! 🎉😊
I finally deleted tiktok and only have is Instagram but on my phone web browser, deleted the app and I have it block on my laptop chrome..it is exhausting. I'm only on RU-vid
I found The Minimalists thru your Netflix documentaries. Thoroughly enjoy your audio podcasts thru Patreon but do not feel a great need to watch thru RU-vid. Quality podcasts, documentaries, and well-written blogs appeal to me more (as maybe a more senior follower) than quick, algorithm-driven social media alternatives such as TikTok. After listening to Cal’s recommendations, I’ve taken the baby step of moving FB from my Home Screen and already feel better!
The bit about everyone racing to comment with their own click-thirsty things on viral social media posts reminds me of being in college when we had to write x number of forum posts a week in class. Everyone was so stressed about making sure we made the grade that the engagement we had with one another was minimal and usually not very deep even if we were graded on replies to others - we were all just trying to check off a box. It took me three or four years after getting my final degree to find learning fun again, and I've concluded that performing for metrics is not healthy, be it for social approval or a grade.
You'll grow. We'll miss you. I'd rather connect with you in one place (RU-vid) and see way less post/videos/content but also see you guys set the standard for prioritizing and adding immense value in one social location less often!
I have to appreciate your authentic post regarding the exit from social media. I found you on RU-vid following your documentaries. I quit all social media in 2019 and it spells FREEDOM. If you leave RU-vid then I guess I listen on my Google Nest to podcasts. There are seasons for everything and everyone. Teachers come and teachers leave. Should this be the case and season, then I wish you well. Youve been quite the inspiration and blessing for me. ❤
Oh, woah!!! I had absolutely ZERO plan of deleting Instagram off my phone, yet, 2 days ago i had enough and i deleted it! (I even put my phone in grayscale!) Its Day 2 and i have been the most productive in what seems years. I am an artist, yet, I haven't created anything in years - i haven't felt inspired. And already, im feeling as though I'm getting my flow back. It may be too early to say, however, I already don't want to go back to social media! Liberating.
Love this! I’m heading to Patreon now to support you guys. I admit to lacking in integrity by continuing to benefit from your podcast without giving back. If we don’t want to be overwhelmed by social media and marketing, it is up to us to financially support those truly adding value.
This is great! As a creator, I encourage this. It gets really rough especially with the analytics aspect. I’ve taken breaks off and on, some were as long as 5-6 months several months and each time I found myself again. I’ve now started building new habits to make sure I’m focused on the joy of creating and allowing those who are meant to see my content find it. For example, this is my other RU-vid channel because I don’t want to constantly see my notifications or lack there of, then take it personal, and feel discouraged to created. Sometimes I just want to chill and watch a video. It helps me create healthy boundaries. RU-vid is my favorite video based platform as a creator and consumer and for me, it is 100% social media. The likes and views count, an algorithm recommending content and pushing out content. As consumer, you’re unaware of the lengths creators go just to get you to click on their videos. from stand out thumbnails to catchy titles to using key words that the algorithm notices you engage with the most. It’s all psychological. Yeah it may not be like fb or IG. But it’s definitely social media. So if you feel called to take a break, this is your sign to do it. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you. Sending much love to all of you 💌
I've deleted Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. My brain feels so much clearer and I have more time. My friends and I actually CALL one another now. I still have RU-vid Premium for the music, sleep noise and some favorite channels that I enjoy.
"Influencers" have been proven to be a bad investment. Brands have not been able to sell a few hundred T-shirts with the "influence" of millions of "followers". As stated, a deeper following is all that matters, not click-bait views or likes. Without social media, sincere FANS will still find you!
I love your podcast and I am a Patreon supporter. The decision to quit social didn’t really affect me as I only listen to the podcast. You are all amazing!
I left Facebook over a year ago for most part and don't regret it. I have been in Facebook maybe less than 20 times scanning over some of the emails I received. I feel freer. I'll miss you. I watch or read what you send when I'm at the elliptical at gym. Blessings for your journey, Cristina 🦋
I clicked on this video because I'm also tired of my phone and social media. The anxiety and distraction and overstimulation is intense! And I have ADHD so it's a double whammy. I'm currently on another break and all on the fence about whether to go back. 🥴 RU-vid isn't bad but the others are time and energy zappers. Not to mention how much of other people's energy and negativity you absorb daily. 😩
Love it I’ve quite most social media and RU-vid seems to be my main one. Actually I quit watching the news long time ago and rarely watch TV these days 👌🏻 I have JOMO not FOMO
TK, I love you! Your contribution to the show is incredible. Really appreciate your take on things and look forward to listening to each new episode. Thank you all for what you do. God bless!
I’m in! For work, need to sell. Can delete the apps off my phone and reinstall when need to upload for work. Otherwise, none of it! Writing this comment so I’ll stick to it! Thank you! I feel relieved!!!! 🙏🏽
So agree with the influencer age coming to an end. I do still find value in the exchange of information (i.e. How to raise chickens or Working with polimer clay)
Bravo, Bravo…I will leave it at that, other than to say I woke up depressed, overwhelmed, and empty this morning. This you-tube may have saved my life. XOX…Love you guys and thanks 💫
What about RU-vid? Is it social media? I recently deleted my Instagram account permanently. Only one app i got stuck that is RU-vid. What should i do? 0:01
Quitting "social" media sites (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) was a wonderful practice for me - especially after the 2016 election and subsequent elections. BUT, I need LinkedIn for my job. For you guys, I don't know how The Minimalists can do that. RU-vid is integral to your success.
Much respect to you for doing this! Well, I already had lots of respect, but now even more so if you really go through with it. I am totally fine with listening to your podcast. And I already don’t have most social media.
I dislike social media because of how it makes me feel. Politicians are not the only ones campaigning 360 days of the year online. Everyone is creating their brand. I support your desire to step back. Death by a thousand paper cuts no more!
I did this a cpl years ago. Deleted Fb. Didn’t have any other platform. It was great. I tried Twitter last year, just for conversations and watching trends that affect my work (Allied/Mental Health) and loved the quiet.
The tug Josh talks about @9:45 stopped at a red light, I’m just gonna check really quick. And then the sudden realization that I fawkin do that too. Man, I’m so fawked. I think this was the clip I needed. 🙏
