What is the minimum you need to know to get a job in tech? I'm going to break down some job roles and let you know what you need to learn.
People often ask me "is this enough to get a job?" I made this video to answer that question.

Thank you for the breakdown! I’ve been wondering what exactly to learn. I graduated with a Bachelors in CIT with a minor in Database Management. I started out trying to get general help desk jobs, but a lot require the Comptia Certs. I realized I took more software based classes and I can go that route instead. Now I want to get in a web developer job, since I enjoyed the web design class in school. I knew I needed to get a refresher on HTML, CSS and JavaScript before applying and your videos are helping. I’m going to continue to practice and hope to start applying within a few months.

So by a career in tech your specifically talking about Web dev and not program development?
@QuentinWatt

Well, I am a web developer, so I am giving opinions on what I know. :) But I did include mobile as well... These are the biggest sectors of the industry. What do you think I should have included?
@slainsco

Tbh I'm just surprised those are so much larger sectors than desktop based programs. Particularly in companies (solid works and other modeling software, simulation software, local database management software, specialised data processing and cnn software etc) maybe just my perspective as an engineering student though?

More people have access to a mobile phone than to a toilet. That means the market for web/mobile is HUGE! Desktop software is much rarer because less people have computers or need specific software.

Why no one talks about Java ? Though it's always on top 🤔

I did mention Java a few times. If you want to build android apps only then it's great. My opinion comes as a web developer and most of the web space is taken up by PHP, then JavaScript, and Ruby etc. They have a lower barrier to entry, and more learning resources available and will be preferred by smaller companies than Java for web.

What about C# and MS SQL server ? Is it worth ? I started learning that combo .
@QuentinWatt
@QuentinWatt 4 года назад
C# not very popular in the web stack, so I can't give a strong opinion on it. Do you have a predetermined job role you'd like to fill? I suppose if you're going the whole ASP route, then it's a good option but you will be sacrificing the popularity of cheaper linux hosting and open source for the Microsoft name brand.
