I really hope everyone enjoys this video on this electrifying pair, a pair who won a lot and changed men's doubles. And I hope all my Indonesian subscribers and viewers of this video appreciate the subtitles. They were only possible with the help of my amazing wife so if you have the time, and want to, then please like the video and show your appreciation for her in the comments below. I am, however, aware that those who rely on the subtitles may not understand what I'm writing here in this comment so I'll leave it here and just hope you enjoy the video 🙌🏻 Ben
@BenBeckmanBadminton this is really a great video of a pair who ruled badminton. Though they could have won more titles and stayed a bit longer. thanks for a great video.
Thanks Ben for this excellent video. I think you have a talent for making a good Badminton documentary. Didn’t know that Kevin doesn’t have a partner he still young, not sure whether he still has the motivation or the enthusiasm of his old self but he’s younger than Marcus.
@amitavraja3385 thank you for the kind words. I will keep trying to get better. Yes Kevin could still have a few more good years left in him but we'll just have to wait and see if he continues playing, and if he does, who with
Kevin & Markus, changed many things in the world of badminton. In fact, they show that body size is not a problem for a fight. Yes, they changed that view. and provide great encouragement to certain people.
Well said all thruout the video. People said that Badminton is the fastest racket sports. Men's doubles is always seen as the fastest among all of the disciplines. Indonesia men's doubles successes rely on faster style compare to others. And the minions in 2016-2019 were simply the fastest pair of humans on the badminton court. Monsters.
As an Indonesians it's very unfortunate not to see them win the Olympic gold medal when they were in their prime era. Nonetheless, they are one of the best Indonesian's MD pair in history. Thank you, The Minions!
miss them so much...especially Kevin...the best ever player in front of the net and really really entertaining....can't t wait to see the next Kevin Sanjaya
I'm from the Philippines and badminton is slowly emerging as a popular sport in my country. The minions to us was a legend...I also had a hard time accepting the bitter truth about the sad ending of their story...But when you said that the brightest star has the shortest life, I realized the fact the their feat although had a sad ending, was also a story of triumph, glory and victory, all of which are life's components...I am now at peace and able to accept that great story of the minions. sad as it may seem in the end,, but was also inspiring and has lots of things to teach us....Mabuhay our Minions !!!
I really miss Clark's voice when they play, Kevin with his funny actions and Marcus with his loud smashes. What's most special in my opinion is when a fast and long rally is over and then Clark will shout oh so awesome. The unexpected ending was that Kevin married the daughter of the TV station owner who broadcast the action hahaha what an extraordinary ending... Always a legend in my and everyone's hearts. everyone is worthy of emulation especially with their struggles but not Kevin who often does funny actions, he knows the ball will come out but he pretends to hit it... hahahahah thak's for make the video.... ❤❤❤
For only 10 years? I guess no men's double will be able to break Minion's records. Mention it 1 by 1: 8 World Tour titles in a year; 29 Super Series and World Tour titles (19 World Tour titles); 4 consecutive wins at the same tournament; Number 1 MD world ranking for 227 weeks. Maybe 30 years later some MD will break one of Minion's records, 50 years to break half, and 100 years to break all of them. Anyway thank you for the documentary video. I know you have spent your time doing research and editing. I really appreciate it 😁
Every pairs have their own time to sparks, but minnios time is the longest, their performances on the tournaments were very entertaining and enjoyable to watch. For me, despite their lost to endo yuta in final all england 2020, it was their best performance so far. If they can play soon after that tournament the fire was still there. But as you mentioned inthe video there were several factors affects them, and it just time their time yet. Despite off all of the rumour spread... Minnios as a pair will always be a gift to badminton world for making the badminton something enjoyable to watch, and gives legacy not only to MD but also for badminton world in overall...thank you minnions 🎉🎉🎉
History was made so now we only can be thankful we have seen all their achievement in badminton. Regardless how is Kevin acting, he still among my favorite shuttler. Happy retirement to both.
Definitely one the best videos I’ve seen over the years on a tribute to the greats in badminton. So much work have gone into producing this, Ben deserves 1M subs !
I stumble upon this pair was in 2015 asian sea games and felt in love immediately. Following them ever since and it sad that my beloved doubles pair is now forever a legend but hopely kevin will be back with new partner and wowed us once again.
I remember watching that event too. Everyone was excited about them. I also saw them at their first tournament together, the All England and they were very exciting
Ben, we couldn't thank you enough for this excellent video. This is simply the best badminton tribute I've ever watched. The way you presented the informations is stunning. I am sure the amount of research you did for this beautiful video must be massive. It requires immense dedication to produce such splendid quality of presentation like this one. Thanks a lot, Ben. I hope you keep making tribute like this for the upcoming-retire legendary shuttlers. This way, we will remember for long and long that in a particular era, there were players as legendary as them that don't deserve to be forgotten quickly.
Thank you so much for your kind words. It was my pleasure to make this video. It was a lot of hours but I enjoyed every second. I can't wait to do this sort of thing for many other pairs, both retired and soon to be retired. Thank you again for your kind words, I appreciate it massively 🙏🏻
They maybe cocky at some time but the performance delivered that their achievements may be unbreakable. Thank you for the video! I hope I can see others as well.
The "cocky" persona is actually one of the smartest stance that they took during the match/ tournament. It's 110% psy-war towards the opponent. In daily life here in Indonesia they're pretty humble, inside-out.
@@widopanenmaya8914 Actually true. Some hated them but if you're an enthusiast on the sport, you will always find the reason on how to improve such as how I improved my footwork because of these 2.
Thank you very much for your video. I still remember the excitement watching badminton all those years while Minions on top. I agree with you, despite their ending, I choose to remember them as the magnificent ahtlete with remarkable achievements. They are will be forever remain Indonesian pride.
it's so sad that the fact their not play for us again in top tier badminton tournament, like you said "the brightest star wont live forever" that wird touch me hard since i being a huge fan for minion. thank you for minion and you ghe creator of this video 😢
Truly cant hold my tears to watch this. The minions were magical and we Indonesian people are super proud of them. Happy retire, Legend ♥ And tons of thank to you Ben for this video. you deserve my subs and a lot more!!!
I started adapting their gamestlye while they were number 1 in the world.....learned a lot from these two amazing athletes. They didn't win any world championships or olympic medals but mannnnn they inspired many players to play like them. Amazing input video, i always checked whether these two pairs would continue or not but sad to hear that both of them retired and didn't get attention as much as Lin dan or LCW but what an era of dominance they displayed. Thank you Minions.
Minions is the strongest and the unluckiest pair. They started to raise when it was the last year to accumulate points for olympic. Despite they won 3 tournament that year, they couldn't catch up with other pair's points. Then in the next olympic they got health problem. Also in they last reign, there is Covid 19. After many tournament was suspended and they also got Covid 19, their performance is never same again. Thank you Minions, you already entertain us and show us what the best you can do
Ikutin minions dari 2017, punya kesempatan nonton mereka langsung di istora pertama kali asian games 2018 - indonesia master 2023. Masa-masa bahagia gue jadi fans badminton. Happy retirement koh sinyo! thank you for the recap video :)) just made me sad again and again.
Really enjoyed this long form deep dive into a team or player . Their profiles also add to more understanding of country organizations and coaches . I hope this video does well for you !
I've been a badminton fan since 2013, the first time I watched Liliyana Natsir/Tantowi Ahmad win the 2013 World Champs after that, I love Badminton, I always followed the news and until finally I saw Kevin/Gideon They made me like badminton more, I always look forward to their matches, I don't know how but there is something about the way they play that makes me very excited, their careers are not Always good, several times failed at the world championships and Olympics. As a fan, I was very sad about how Marcus got injured, their game changed and they could no longer compete and finally Markus decided to retire, as a fan I am just grateful for being in the world of badminton because I really idolize you. Thank you. Btw Thanks for the content.
amazing video! was lovely to revisit some of the 2017-19 dominant minions era again. also interesting how indonesia has gone from the most dominant mens doubles country to struggling to having 2 pairs for the olympics this year. i guess the retirement of gideon (minions) and age catching up to the daddies, the quality of training is just not there anymore (?) definitely interesting times as we build up to the olympics
Appreciating your wife’s work! I initially thought your long-form content would be hard to get traction but I changed my mind. I think you have a shot at it Ben. In the edutainment space they started having long-form content that is doing well. If you grow consistently you’ll be the first guy to do long-form content in the badminton space. Woohoo! I hope you find a team, or at least some help, to help you grow. All the best!
I'll pass on your appreciation to her. I do agree, it was a slight risk but having watched many long format RU-vid videos, and being hooked on subjects I never thought I would be, I felt it was possible. I'm by no means perfect, I have many things to improve on (a team would certainly help), but I'll keep working at it. Thanks again and hopefully let's see this channel grow 😊
Kevin still has many years of top class badminton left in him. May be he should switch to Mixed doubles like Watanabe as Mens double has become insanely competitive.
Thanks Ben for creating this kind of documentary. I hope you can become some sort of "Chronicler" for this sports. Really like your insights and respects for the players. Kudos!
You're more than welcome. That's the plan, I'd love to tell more stories. In fact I'm working on a Kento Momota one right now which is more detailed and offers more of my own insights and thoughts
It's only 8 am and my eyes are wet. Thanks for the video, Ben 🙏🔥 They should be celebrated, indeed. And boy we are lucky to have witnessed this pair on court in our lifetime. ❤
Thanks for the well narrated recap, Ben. Wish Kevin best of luck and have 2nd wave of his badminton life with new partner. And happy retirement Gideon. Both of u r legend already
terimakasih telah membuat ulasan minion kami,, sangat berkesan dan mendalam videonya,, mereka akan menjadi panutan bagi generasi kedepan,, bakat yg entah kapan akan muncul kembali,, terimakasih,,, terimakasih,,,
When I heard the news about Marcus retiring, it was completely unexpected. Besides being a talented player, he is also still young. Until now I sometimes don't believe that he has retired from badminton. He is one of my favorite players and to this day I still like watching videos of his previous matches. Happy retirement Marcus, I hope your life will always be happy and of course with your beloved family🫶.
I haven't watched any of your other videos and just looked at the rest of the titles and looks interesting. Didn't know you had such a passion for making Badminton videos on stars and making them well. Thanks for sharing!
More than welcome. I love doing this stuff and will continue to make them. Too many other stories to tell. Hope u enjoy the rest of the videos I have made
Thank you for the documentary video about minions. It would be a shame if it ended like this. Indeed, since the end of 2019, the minions' performance has declined, with Kevin and Gideon taking turns experiencing injuries. And finally the worst was Gideon who had to undergo surgery twice. BWF must improve the regulations for each athlete when participating in the competition. Try to imagine that athletes have to be able to perform at the top, where they have to take part in around twenty-two championships every year. It is very possible that the athlete will be injured. Ultimately nothing can withstand time and age. Time will bring a new generation who will become the next badminton legend.
This simply tells us that nothing is permanent; there will be better players coming ahead of us. Anyways, what really matters is the impression they have left on everyone. Their best will always be imprinted in history!
Thanks Ben. This was a great video highlighting the career of these two magnificent players. The tragedy for stellar individuals, in any field, is that there is only one direction for them to head in... downwards. In a sport with the physical demands of badminton that grip on the top of the greased pole is brief and it tends to come at a young age which makes maintaining personal value and perspective when the light begins to fade all the harder. Sadly, we tend to focus more on getting our elite sportsmen to this level than what we to prepare them for once they are there and what must inevitably follow.
This is all true, it is inevitable that a pair would start to lose, get slower and be overtaken by the next generation. But it shouldn't have gone the way it did, making the ending rather sad. I just hope both are happy and can live with limited regrets. They entertained us all for those years they were at their best
@@BenBeckmanBadminton agree its rather sad to see the way its end. and there's always the lingering question what could been, but not everyone can had a career like Hendra Setiawan so i hope Gideon can enjoy his retirement now
Thanks for amazing video, sedih liatnya, karna ga mungkin lgi liat Minion main langsung dilapangan. Selamat pensiun Gideon, Sukses selalu untuk kevin. Terimakasih untuk semua ceritanya. 🎉❤
thank you for this video,...we definitely miss them so much, and i agree we should just celebrate and be proud of their achievements and revolutionary play in badminton...legends for sure!! they still have so many unbreakable records up to now....and lets be honest, current MD players are mostly inspired and learned from minion play style....Thank you minion, thank you kevin n koh gideon....you are legends with all your greatness and flaws, coz nobody is perfect....a reunion match would be interesting tho hehehehe
You're more than welcome, I'm glad u liked the video. They were definitely an amazing pair and should be remembered fondly. So many amazing compilations of their top moments online 🙂🙌🏻
Thanks for the superb documentary on this pair. As you mentioned in the end, the brightest star doesn’t shine forever and it outshined the rest and this is exactly what this pair had done, as the most dominant double pair the world had ever seen. To learn Kevin hasn’t got a partner & who’s still young, is sad. He should pair up with a good partner but I doubt whether he can get his old spark back and his enthusiasm! It might be the end of the road for Kevin as well, even though he is not that old as Marcus.
Glad u enjoyed it. Yeah he still has time but it'll be difficult for him to rebuild with someone new. Someone who is capable of playing with him. If there is a younger, very talented player in their line up with some good power then we could see a return to the top
As someone who followed them since they were just starting the partnership, I can tell one thing I have noticed since their "downfall" era started. That being Kevin is a sore loser. Now, don't get me wrong, I can explain this. Since his early days, Kevin had been the "miracle kid", the shining star, the future's hope, etc. He had such a brilliant run of career since his youth, including back when he was still played as a XD player. He was phenomenal, that man only knows victory all through his career. He developed an ego as a champion, badly elevated with his insane partnership with Gideon. The amazing run from 2015 to 2019 made him a guy who knows nothing but victory. Sadly, this also made him easily frustrated when faced with loss, no matter how minor it is. Gideon's injuries was the beginning of Kevin's sour moods. He depended on Gideon a LOT throughout their partnership (it wasn't a one sided partnership, as they both equally needed each other - sometimes people just forgot that Gideon was the other half of the key they needed to win titles), so when Gideon couldn't quite keep up because of his injuries, that's when Kevin's frustration began. As I stated earlier, all his life he only knows of Glory. All he knew was victory after victory, and they came to him as easily as breathing oxygen. So when that victory slowly become harder and harder to achieve, he was beyond pissed. Not to Gideon because we all know damn well how hard that man tried. Things got worse when their coach aired their dirty laundry like that. Now, like you mentioned in the vid, you didn't see anything wrong with that statement. Personally, I think it's a good wake up call because that's a genuine concern and it needed to be addressed. However, back to my earlier point. Kevin is a sore loser. Nothing else matters to him other than victory, so when they were starting to lose, he doesn't care if it's his own mood that was the cause of their loss. That souring mood, combined with someone publicly blaming you for even the smallest thing; honestly did nothing for someone like Kevin. All his last matches with Gideon became moodier and moodier and I guess the only solution to that problem is either; Gideon magically healed from his injuries, or got him a pair that could keep up with him like Gideon could. It's a whole new essay if we are going to talk about what happened to Gideon, but I'm gonna skip that for now. The "last straw" that sealed the deal for Kevin to also retire from Badminton following Gideon was; apparently, he asked for PBSI to give him new partner while Gideon was in recovery. He asked for three specific players, which iirc were Marthin, Maulana, and probably Ardianto, I think. Realistically speaking, Kevin chose those names NOT only because they are obviously the three best "after Gideon" options he got, but also because of the point. With either of those three, he can resume playing at a higher level instead of restarting the whole badminton career at the very bottom. Sadly, instead of giving the Indonesian best player what he wanted, they paired him with Rahmat who very obviously didn't have that much point. Even with Kevin's points, iirc it's still harder for them to compete on the top level. That partnership probably only frustrate Kevin more because it did kind of felt like he was abandoned, after everything he'd achieved for the sport. It's actually PBSI's biggest loss because Kevin, if given the chance, definitely still got years of good things in his career. Even Hendra who is nearing 40 is still playing. But instead, he retired so soon and so young.
After Gideon's retirement announcement on March 9, and Kevin was not included in the 2024 Thomas Cup in Chengdu. So I believe, Kevin will also retire. It's a pleasure to witness their glory, all players have their time but in their time, they are the best.
Best narrative vid so far regarding minions carrier n they're impact on md players. 👍 Still hoping kevin (w new pairs) and under new indo national teams lead by ricky subagja will be back to compete on MD top pairs.
Ssup Ben, loved your coverage on these topics. Just a question, do you have plans on covering Hiroyuki Endo's All England journey. I heard it's an interesting one!
Superb mini-documentary Ben. The content was well-put, clearly indicating diligent research and effort to put all the information in chronological order. I was particularly impressed by the way you put the intricacy of the Minions rift with Coach Herry IP. Although it went very public, actually what happened between them was never really clear for the public even in Indonesian domestic news due its private nature between the World's No.1 pair and their coach and also to save the reputation of the Indonesian badminton association. Great analysis Ben, well put and balanced 👍. I can imagine how tough the public pressure on this pair. The expectation of the Indonesian crowd is no joke when it comes to badminton. It's a like a pasta to the Italian, you have to nail it. There is a high bar for them. That slower shuttle cock bit is a nice find 👍👍👍 Nice title too. Congrats for this brilliant piece Ben.
Thank you so much for the kind words. It took a lot of research, digging around and reading, plus help from my wife to translate, but it was all worth it. Made even more so by kind comments from people like u 😊
Yuta endo really expose the weakness of minions, which their not all rounded. Kevin is fast but he not too powerful for playing in back, while Gideon is too slow and sluggish to play at front. And considering their are based on speed alone, their will really super weak when comes to againt good defender such yuta and endo. But still as Malaysian itself, although no medal on Olympics, their changed badminton culture. Especially in mental game. What i like about Kevin, he play harsh psychology but he can take if opponent did. I think you can make a documentary also about chen long (underrated ever) and lcw (king without crown)
Minions is literally the Lee Chong Wei of Men's Double, both of them are the game changer for their respective sector, known for their consistency of defending the #1 world rank for a quite long time, and mastering the Superseries / World Tour but sadly never won major event tittle ie Olympic or World Championship well in this case Minions is a little bit luckier because they got Asian Games gold medal and become the main part of Indonesian Champions Squad in Thomas cup 2020 while Lee Chong Wei he almost got no major event title beside maybe Commonwealth games but i don't think that was even counted in BWF Calendar But no matter what both of them are pride of the country Minions and LCW is a Pride for Indonesia and Malaysia
