It always impressed me how D. Boon thrashed around onstage endlessly. And never missed a beat, singing every word and playing every note effortlessly. I would be dead if I tried that, and I'm in pretty decent shape. He is definitely sadly missed. The most underrated band to have ever existed.

And today (Dec. 22, 2020) marks the 35th anniversary of d. Boone’s death at the age of 27 in a traffic accident. The axel fell off of his van while he was resting in the back. For punk rock in Los Angeles, that is the day the music died. Mike Watt did amazing work with fIREHOSE (and other bands) after that, but it definitely broke a part of his heart forever.

I was at the REM show in Charlotte, NC at the park center. The Minutemen opened and they were so great. At some point, Mike Watt, who was dressed like Fidel Castro, frisbeed his hat straight out into the audience. It came right to me. Still got it. Ran out the next day and bought 55 on the 10 and Buzz or Howl. I was so crushed when I heard D. Boon had died. That night he was just the most alive person I had ever seen onstage. He was like a big jumping bean. And so intense and funky on the guitar. They were so unique. Never saw anything like it before or since. Amen to REM for insisting that The Minutemen open for them on that tour.

d. Boon moved well for a big man. It seemed as if he consciously played those thin strings more often to give Watt his "space" on the bass. It's a great sound. I preferred fIREHOSE, but these guys were great.
@jsogman
@jsogman 7 лет назад
Elmo Blatch totally about that space, absolutely, if you have the chance go see Mike Watt and the Tom and Jerry Show I just saw them this weekend, and it was all about each instrument (drums, bass, guitar) having their own space, totally great rhythmic relationships and bursts of noise and energy. easily one of the best shows I've seen in a good long while, it was amazing! I haven't even really been a fan of these guys for that long, and I'm just learning about the Minutemen, it's a tragedy I could never see them too!
@nomadben
@nomadben 4 года назад
@@jsogman I saw Mike Watt and the Missingmen just a few months ago, and my experience was totally the same! Mike found this really young guy that's an amazing drummer and surprisingly can actually hold up to George Hurley. The guitarist was perfect as well, absolutely nailed the tone. It was a fantastic show. I recommend anyone that likes the Minutemen to go see Mike Watt in one of his bands.

He died in a car accident, laying in the back of a van while sick with the flu when the rear axle fell off in a pothole. (Keep in mind it _was_ 1985, he was born in 1958, and lots of people still didn't wear a seat belt.) The year before he died (1984,) some of his lyrics on their double album "Double Nickels on the Dime" had these lyrics: "I make certain that my head is connected to my body." (From "It's Expected, I'm Gone." His neck broke in the wreck.) "Pothole in the road? It's only a detour." (from "Nothing Indeed.")
