I was in college and skipped tennis practice to watch this game on a small b/w tv. It is so true, the country was a mess, and this group of young men showed everyone what we were capable of .
@@GoAndLiveThe USA Mens Soccer Team would be epic & roughly the same odds to wins the Cup as the “Miracle” team had to beat the Soviets. The win would do so much to heal this divided nation & go back to play for the name on the front of the jersey rather than on the back. God bless America!🇺🇸 #OneCanDream
The best sports moment in US history without a doubt. I lost three teeth during this tournament. Wiggled them loose from nervousness. Such an incredible moment. Jim Craig was so amazing that game. I get chills and goose bumps every time I watch this. The joy brings tears to my eyes. God is so good.
Jimmy Craig stood on his head for the whole 3rd period to ice that game for the US. Can never be understated how important his play was down the stretch.
Yes he definitely made a lot of saves especially after the US made that last winning goal. Cause Russia kept trying desperately to get a goal and Jim Craig stopped all by 3.
It was what changed Americas attitude. While Jimmy Carter was telling us Americas best days are behind us. He got fired and replaced by Ronald Reagan as President for it...As America had known nothing but defeat for 4 years... I was there when it happened...
@@marksotnikov5587 What the hell you talking about? Beating the Soviets didn't get them shit... They had to beat Finland for the Gold medal in the next round. If not. They did not get any medal. That was the Miracle..
I watched the game! I remember just how uplifting it was to the ENTIRE USA!!!! I know the final score, yet, whenever I see a clip of this film, I cannot help but to get teary-eyed and smiling!!! What this country needs right now is another MIRACLE!!!!!!!
All these years later, Al Michael’s immortal 7 little words still make me bawl. There are only two times I ever saw my late, much beloved father actually crying tears: 9/11 & ‘Miracle on Ice’. RIP Daddy. ❤
Herb Brooks was a GENIUS! And Kurt Russell played his role as Herb Brooks with uncanny accuracy! Kurt is a National Treasure! This movie will never get old!
The greatest game in the history of the sport. Played by a bunch of college kids from different parts of the country, coached by the only man for the job. It was destiny! I wasn’t alive but my dad has spoken about it for years. Still gives me the chills.
Great movie, but the actual event was even greater. Not just because of the sport, but what it meant to us as a country. Things were pretty bleak back then. Rampant inflation, our people held hostage in Iran, the building Soviet threat and just a general malaise throughout the land. But this one game, this one team of kids, started to turn it around. It gave Americans hope, something we sorely needed back then.
Yep -- very true. Most amazing part was the way we had to keep coming back from each Soviet goal. Most upsets happen when the dog leads end to end. But we fell behind three times, and answered each time, finally taking that lead in the 3rd. I will NEVER forget nervously fidgeting every second until that clock read 0:00.
Perfectly said, Guardian. As a country, we were at about our lowest. That was way more than a hockey win. That energized us as a nation. Raised spirits. Made us proud to be Americans. In my opinion, the absolute greatest moment in American sports history. In a sport that not many Americans cared about at the time.
I was a 20 year old college student on a division 1 athletic scholarship at the time. I watched every game in awe of the heart and spirit of those guys. There was no way they should come away with the gold and they did. There are lots of guys that if you give them an excuse to lose they will take it and accept the outcome. These guys had every reason to lose; age, experience, length of time as a team, and yet they refused to lose. Greatest show on earth by far.
I remember running out of our house screaming we won.. We Won!!! Then I noticed so did all my neighbors. My buddy's I played hockey with on the bogs. All screaming and going nuts. A block party broke out amongst our parents. Everyone just shaking there heads in disbelief. Replaying every moment. Like it was yesterday. Awesome Sauce!
There was all that celebration going on, what, five hours after the game was over? The game was not, NOT, televised live. The time ABC showed the game basically everyone knew we had already won. I’m not diminishing the win. In my opinion the greatest game in American sports. But you didn’t sit there and watch it play out in real time. Stop making up stories.
I remember watching this game on TV while holding my 1st son he was about 9 months old, and still some 40 years latter we still play hockey on the weekends, that was a great win for us ,it brought the country together for a little while
We all remember watching that game. Feeling the tension after We took the lead 4-3. On the edge of our seats until the final moment and screaming and jumping for joy! I still remember hearing fireworks go off in our neighborhood immediately after the win. We all knew what they and who they were for: America ! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 U - S - A! U - S - A! U - S - A! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 ❤️❤️❤️😁😁😁
No you didn’t hear fireworks after the game. Because the game was NOT televised live. ABC showed the game about 5 hours after it was over. And by then, most everybody had already heard the outcome. Stop making up stories.
I watched it on HBO back in 2005 and bought the special edition DVD years later. Still very tense to watch and you just jump with every block and goal… especially Rizzo’s tiebreaker
My brother had made this video and I stand by his amazing storytelling and the way he can engulf into a great memory and time for all of us and turn it into a spectacle. RIP Eric, you'll always be cherished. 2016
I just love this...the music is perfection!! All actors were superb, but I have to admit OC and Rizzo are my favourites, and KR as HB is a perfect match! Thank you to you all for a masterful rendering of this miraculous event!
I'm sure the DaVinchi Code never knew how fitting this music would be to magnify the greatness of this athletic achievement by these 20 young men, and their exceptional coaches and the team doctor! To whomever found the music, and to all involved in this tremendous achievement - thank you - and RIP HB...your life lessons and guidance to your 'boys', while harsh to many, should be embraced! Today's society could learn so very much from you! @@Timelessmemoriesvid
As a 12 year old boy, this is one of my greatest memories with actually watching this with my dad and brothers… lost dad in 2018, and Timmy 3 days before his birthday…. Special.
This was a great moment in history that these young kids today don't understand the true meaning of USA and what this one hockey game brought Americans together. Thank you. We need more coaches like herb brooks in the NHL. Thank you and be safe my fellow Americans.
I was a little kid when I saw this real game on tv . I have never played hockey in my life . After watching this amazing team go on and win , my life changed forever , and have been playing hockey ever since !!!
It actually was the next day. ABC wanted it to be during prime hours and Russia didn’t want it at 4 am. The game was thought to be delayed, but never was. It’s quite interesting if you wanna read about it.
I'm born and bread in London England I was 8 year old watching this I was in my third season of peewee hockey as we call it.it was hard back then to get any nhl games on tv but wat happened to mike euruzione wot goal wot a player never new wot happened to his career, remember him commentating a few times that's it but the whole team wot heart👍🏴
👏👏👏👏 Pairing this musical score from the film The Da Vinci Code with this Miracle On Ice clip was pure GENIUS. This particular piece (especially!!) blows my mind 🤯 EVERYTIME!!!
Exceptional blending of “Chevaliers de Sangreal” by Hans Zimmer [The Da Vinci Code Soundtrack] in the background. (Golf clap) Now fast forward 40 years, and USA is yet again in dark times and in need of another Miracle to help us all through these troubled times.
People forgot that Tikonov pulled put Tretiak after the 1st period because he allowed 2 goals. The outcome could've been different if he had stayed in the net all game.
That was a difference maker in the game. Johnson not giving up on the dump in shot at the end of the 1st stunned the Soviets and possibly the 2nd biggest mistake only behind pulling Tretiak was not pulling the goalie at the end to get to overtime. Tikonov didn’t know how to play being down and figured they’d just tie it up at some point when the Americans got tired but as we know, the Americans never got gassed and the Soviets were just absolutely done and could barely do anything.
@@pietrm1 they lost. How was that the right move? You have one of the best goalies of all time in your net and as a coach you make an emotional decision. The mistakes were made and taking Tretiak didn't fix them. If anything he would've been even more locked in for the rest of the game. Would you take Gretzky out for a few mistakes? Absolutely not. The Soviets hadn't been tested in a long time and their coach panicked. He chose a scapegoat and showed his players that everyone on the team could get guillotined. That coach was hated by his players (as they mentioned in that team's documentary) and other coaches were just as successful. He just managed the politics of the Soviet Union better and had friends in high places.
I was in Lake Placid, in a bar, watching this game on TV - I had tickets for the gold medal game - bought months in advance. It was great being in Placid after the game!
There was no gold medal game. It was a round robin tournament so there was only games based on ground series seedings. Soviets-USA was A1-B2, and Sweden - Finland was B1-A2. Last day it was A2-B2, Finland-USA and A1-B1, Soviets-Sweden. Schedule was done in advance so there was no way knowing which teams would qualify for medal round and who were eliminated. The final four games schedules was known only after ground pool games were finished.
Herb never showed that much emotion. He just clinched his fist, turned, and walked down the tunnel... he wanted it to be about the players. A truly great coach, and an even better man.
Gives me goosebumps every time I watch that. Wonder if we’d all pull together again if that same situation occurred?? I’m sure the true Americans would…
This was a countries together moment as Americans. Sad to see how times have changed for the worse. I hope some day we are USA again but sadly I fear the it will never happen again. I am not being political just sad for all Americans.
Tonight, we are the greatest family on the planet earth. You no why? Because we can. Nothing is impossible in the eyes of God. We are all winners ❤️🙏🇺🇸🌎
Because of the TV time delay of the game, I remember listening to it live on the radio and had to wait until the evening to actually watch it. Even tho I already knew the outcome, it was still very exciting. And being a Minnesota boy, who grew up in the same region as a lot of the players, the game was a very big pride booster. Went to middle school with Mark Pavelich.
I remember that game as a kid. Unbelievable game and stressful to watch. Soviets kept on top of Craig and he was outstanding stopping that puck …. NEVER seen a game such as amazing as this game on TV. Hats off to all the players.
“Great moments are born from great opportunities. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. 1 game. If we played em 10 times they’d win 9. But not tonight, not this game.”
What peeps need to know: the USSR team comprised experienced hockey professionals ("employed" by the red army), and the USA team was amateurs (college kids). It was David vs Goliath.
We were watching it on TV and there wasn't a dry eye in the house one of the greatest sports moments in my lifetime and in a few months later Georgia winning the national championship against Notre Dame! Man I miss my childhood!
Crazy how a movie, I know it happened, they made it pretty much exact how it played out (I wasn’t born, actually in my moms belly born April 18, 1980). This makes me smile ear to ear and chills all over.
Just played on this ice and i was in the locker room of the miracle speech. It was great playing on that ice where they won. When i scored i did the rizzo running man celly
Great movie, very inspiring. Well played by Kurt Russell (representing a great Legend: Herb Brooks). And also give a lot of credit to the stars who Played The Hockey Players....
There is no greater feeling in all of sports than being told you can’t, and proving everyone wrong. Just once I wish we could all experience what it truly means to overcome this kind of adversity.
I was 11 years old. Lived in Tampa Florida. Barely knew what Hockey was. Did not even know the game was being played. (I thought it was being played later in the evening) But, I do remember watching a re run of Star Trek on local station when they interrupted, mid scene, of Matt Decker flying a shuttle craft into the mouth of the Doomsday Machine, to announce that Team USA had just defeated the Soviet Union in Olympic Ice Hockey. I did not know all the background behind Hockey History, or how many years in a row, the Soviets had one Olympic Gold. But, I knew about the Soviet Union and Olympic Competition. I had watched many Olympic Competitions that seemed 'rigged' in favor of the Soviet's. I felt there was something special and extraordinary about this moment. I started yelling this out to the entire house. My Dad came out of the Kitchen and did not believe what I was saying. He had not seen the report. But, he understood enough about this matchup to realize I was most likely mistaken. My Mom even chimed in on this. Neither believed me. But, I kept insisting, and it caught their interest enough to call the local TV Station and ask. Neither were Hockey Fans. We were all Floridians. (Dad was from WVA, but had been here since his late teens) We were also a fiercely Patriotic Family. And we always watched the Olympics together back then. We had planned to watch the game when it was delayed broadcast at 8pm that evening. (and we did). But, despite not knowing much about Hockey back then, we all realized, this was something special.
No it wasn't. It was a round robin medal round. USA played Finland in the last game, and Finland got... 4th place? Soviets, despite losing to USA got silver? USA finished with 5 points, 2-1-0 record. Soviets silver with 4 points, 2-0-1 record. Sweden for bronze with 2 points, 0-2-0 record. Finland 4th with 1 point, 0-1-0 record. If USA lost to Finland on the last day, it was possible USA would finish 4th.
