Thanks! I have been using my own copy of the St Joseph Sunday Missal for many years now, but never got the weekday missal. Your video gave me the confidence to purchase the two volumes of weekday and tackle how to use it. I picked up an extra Church Calendar free from church (it's mid-January now, so they've been available for two months now) and cut strips down all the Sundays and use them for both book marks and to keep track of what week of the Ordinary time that we are in or the like.

The Daily Roman Missal (in hardcover, which I use) is a BIG book! But is has lots more than just missal material. Pretty cool book.

I actually did go back and got the bigger volume. And yes, there is a lot of extra stuff in it that is very educational!

I have that one, I have the 1964 Interim Missal, the 1962 and Fr. Lasance's Missal.....all Hand Missals with Latin/English for the Sacrifice of the Mass. The Daily Roman Missal does not have Latin for the readings.

The Daily Roman missal is the one that I have, along side with the Magificat, which also has the readings and prayers and responsorial psalms used in mass.

Does that contain the Latin parts as I believe it does?

Christopher McNicholas The daily Roman Missal has the order of mass in Latin with English on opposite page, but the readings opening prayer, prayer over the offerings and closing prayer is English only

Just out of curiosity, is there a completely separate section for Sundays?
@GordMcFee
@GordMcFee 4 года назад
@@cmcnicholas No there isn't. The weeks run from Sunday to Saturday and contain all the readings, etc for that week. For example, the Second Week of Ordinary Time will start on the Sunday and run through to the Saturday. It is a very thick book - over 2,500 pages. It looks daunting at first, but is easy once you are used to it. It has several introductory sections, e.g. "How to use this Missal", the Liturgical Calendar, etc. Like the Ordinary in the Liturgy of the Hours, the "Order of the Mass" is in the middle. Preceding that is the first part of the "Proper of Time" (Advent, Christmas Time, Lent, Holy Week, The Sacred Paschal Triduum, and Easter Time). Following the Order of the Mass are "Ordinary Time", and the "Solemnities of the Lord during Ordinary Time". That completes the Proper of Time and by now, you are up to about page 1723. Then comes the Proper of Saints and the Commons. Then there are several kinds of Masses, for example Ritual Masses, Masses for Special Needs, Votive Masses and Masses for the Dead. Then there is a huge appendix of information, such as "How to be a better Catholic", Basic Prayers, and so on. That section is very interesting. The only thing I don't like is that the scripture readings are from the New American Bible translation and I am Canadian, where our Council of Bishops uses a different translation. So the readings are the same but worded a bit differently. Other than that minor annoyance, I love it.

Hi, what is a External solemnity? I noticed that the description for the Extraordinary mass today said External Solemnity of the Ascension.
@cmcnicholas
@cmcnicholas 4 года назад
Off the top of my head I am not sure what you were referencing. But I know that some... if not many... dioceses in the U.S. moved the Thursday celebration of the Ascension to this Sunday, which is normally the 7th Sunday in Easter. I'm guessing you are seeing a reference to that special situation... Some people will be celebrating the 7th Sunday of Easter and others will be celebrating the Ascension. You would have to check your own diocese calendar or website to verify which one you are in.
@12369ja
@12369ja 4 года назад
With the Church that does the masses that I watch on RU-vid they did the mass of the Ascension in the extraordinary form Thursday night and for today’s Extraordinary form of the mass it is the External Solemnity of the Ascension and I have never heard of External Solemnity before. They are in a dioceses that does transfer the feast to the 7th Sunday of Easter.

I found this bit on a website... "The “external solemnity” is a pastoral provision which may be made, but is not obligatory, in cases where a reasonable number of the faithful are unable to attend the feast on the day itself. The Mass of the feast is repeated, but the Office is not changed to match it"

I've purchased these Missals in large print edition because my vision isn't ideal but I'm still waiting on delivery from Amazon UK to my residence in Spain. In your opinion, do I also need to purchase a Missal guide ? Thank you.

I don't think you really need one.. I did just to review it, but honestly... if you have one of those free church calendars or access to the Internet, you can figure out where you are in the liturgical year with ease.

@@ejavenger Fantastic! Reading off of a cell phone looks wrong to me.. and weekday masses in the church hymnal/missals only print the entrance and communion antiphons, so I like these hand missals so I can read along or read on days I miss mass.

St Joseph Missals in Latin are available which were printed before 1970. If you find one from the 1950s/1960s those are available for the Latin Mass.
