On the 26 June 1944, twenty days after the Allied landings in Normandy, the British Second Army launched Operation Epsom; a three-Division advance to capture the ground to the South of the French city of Caen. Among the first objectives to be captured was the village of St Manvieu Norrey; the 6 Royal Scots Fusiliers were tasked with its capture, during which they suffered heavy casualties in trying to accomplish their mission, prompting the British Command to send in additional reinforcements.
Among them was the Crocodile tank commanded by Lieutenant Norman Harvey and crewed by Corporal Robert Hodges, Lance Corporal Cyril Golding, Trooper Harold Peck and Trooper G. Pepper. Arriving at St Manvieu, the Crocodile immediately went into action; several hours later, the tank was found by British troops, immobilised, with its 5-man crew nowhere to be found. Since then, a mystery has surrounded the fate of 4 of the crewmen, who, to this day, are still Missing in Action.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant Norman Harvey, Corporal Robert Hodges, Lance Corporal Cyril Golding & Trooper Harold Peck
