if you like this, you are going to love the Fields of the Nephilim,a great forgotten goth 80s-90s band, think pink floyd meets talk talk meets sisters of mercy.
Thanks for the reaction Justin, I'm glad that you liked it, another fantastic song from them is "Wasteland", it's powerful like Tower. The only Talk Talk album that you didn't react to is the first one, from that album I want to recommend the last song "Candy" which is wonderful.
No way! Listened to this in the car on my way up to Scotland about three weeks ago. First time I’d listened to it for about 30 years. Had the 12” ( think it had an extended remix in it) 😂
The Mission is where the rest of Sisters of Mercy went after they couldn't stand Andrew Eldritch anymore. So yeah, Goth pedigree. Check out their debut single (I don't know if it's even on an album) Serpent's Kiss.
The Mission are great but I’m more of a Sisters of Mercy fan myself their debut album is fantastic “Nine While Nine” is my favourite “No Time to Cry” and “Walk Away” were the singles (both brilliant)
I’ve seen the mission olive, one of my all time favourite bands. Up there with the Fields of the Nephilim, The sisters of mercy and the Cult. They defined an era that no one was aware of unless you were there.
I worked with Wayne for 8 years on his solo shows and Tower always lifted my spirits even at the end of a bad say. Loved watching the genuine smile on your face as certain parts hit!
So, I'm usually quite measured about when in the day I listen to reaction videos, but when I saw this had just landed, I immediately dropped what I was doing, grabbed my headphones, and tuned right on in. What a great track! I'll confess I'm more familiar with the 4-minute single/radio edit of this track, and I've not heard either version for a long while, but listening today, it still sounds as good as it ever did, and yes, it richly deserves the full 8 minutes.
A big powerful song from a great album. I would like to think that, if I didn't know already, I would be able to tell that John Paul Jones was heavily involved with the arrangements of this album. It was nice to hear this track again. I used to play the "Children" album quite often back in the late 80s..
Great track - my favourite of theirs. Fun to play, too. Not sure whether it's the way they do it, but tuning a guitar to DADDAD gives it just the right ringing tone to play this. If you like this track, try "Deliverance". You should also try some of Echo and the Bunnymen's music - they often hit a similar groove to this.
People often talk about the 80s drum sound, use of reverb and synth tones, but there's also a vocal style and even a kind of melodic approach that"s characteristic of the decade. You can hear a similar declamatory vocal feel with a deep baritone and very open tone production using wide interval choices (fifths and octaves) that suit the densely layered drone-like instrumentation on tracks by OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark), Duran Duran, Big Country, even on early U2. This is not a criticism, just an observation. I enjoyed the song.
Well that was a surprise, hearing that I'd recommended this song! I love it, though I have to confess I don't recall recommending it to you 🤔 - was it under a Sisters Of Mercy reaction maybe??
Love and Rockets are another incredible goth / rock band. They are made up of 3 of four members of Bauhaus, sans Peter Murphy. Before they became Love and Rockets they were Tones On Tail, another great moody goth band.
Great tune, playing, production. Not their 'rockiest', more a goth ballad this. But definitey haunting and full of atmos. If not staying with the album JP, i'd deffo give Serpents Kiss a listen, and for a live taster Shelter From the Storm. The 12in B side of the single IV, best version. Q: Apropos of them live, saw them bunch of times. And in Liverpool (at least), prior them going on stage, the crowd would chant, cry out 'Eskimo' ! don't know why, anyone? Or just in 'The Pool' 🤔
Justin, I think you’d like Clan of Xymox (they later just became Xymox). Check out “Moscoviet Mosquito”, “A Day”, “Evelyn”, “Obsession” and “Imagination “ to start with. Thanks, man! 🧛🏻🧛🏻♀️🧛🏻♂️
Sweet! The MIssion are a bit of a guilty pleasure, but their pre-1993 catalog is well worth studying. After that it depends on whether you can live with WH's tendency to not only recycle the same lyrical gobbledegook multiple times (especially the sex songs and drug songs) - but also borrow musical material from everyone from The Cure to Ike & Tina to The Faces...
Hola friend! Quisieramos muchos ver eaa reaccion. Saludos!!!💪🖒🖐
For future and back reference, if one would wish to test my resilience and endeavour regarding perseverance in facing my prejudices on this friendly hospice of a channel dedicated to breakin down barriers in the musical realms, then is shall now print below wot I used to regard as my dreaded top 10 'rock' acts from the past. 10. The blinkin Cure 9. The blinkin Cult 8. The blinkin Inspiral Carpets 7. The blinkin Doors 6. The blinkin Blues Bros 5. The blinkin TheThe 4. The blinkin Levellers 3. Siouxsie & The blinkin Banshees 2. Garbage 1. The Mission This list was based on hearing such tunes as the one you've just played: on the radio, occasionally in school/college ,clubs /discos and are often smothered in deep social ineptitude on my part - a subtle yet telling inability to endear myself to the social styles and fashion of said artists. Also, it didn't help that their songs were, frankly, crap! Time has shown me however what accomplished songsmiths all of this Bunch are, along with The Verve / Oasis / The Beatles and Happy blinkin Mondays. That's the next 3 JustJP months sorted then! ✔ Great Fun . Diolch.
@@paulcollins5586 I'm cut n pasting a reply here i got from CAdams6398: 'It was an early name given to their die hard fans, who would follow them around the globe! 😊' As i said to him, we live and learn eh 👍
That's a shame! But I'm glad you got to see them at all. They're touring again. I never really checked them out before so I'm happy to join JP on this journey. I'm seeing the Chameleons (technically Chameleons Vox) open for them in September!
I watched the mission in Liverpool a couple of years back as my uncle was a massive fan. And I swear they are one of the best live bands you will ever see!! Wayne hussey is one of the greatest live singers around. If anyone ever gets chance buy tickets if they are in town
You did the Waterboys but you did the worst first song possible. You should listen to The Pagan Place album, then This is the sea. Try Savage Earth Heart (especially live at Gladtonbury ‘86)
Apart from their series of first singles in 1986/87 I am not fond of this band. This track reminds me of the Simple Minds from the mid 80's and it's a period that I don't like at all !😒
@Paul-Martin Scheib I really like early Simple Minds (1978-82) but from Sparkle in the Rain and the rest, it really became something else that doesn't speak to me anymore and this piece from The Mission reminds me of this era of SM. It's actually quite subjective but that's the way it is for me.😉
