@@JackDanReact Stephen King himself PRAISED this ending and claimed he wished he thought of it himself. I think I remember him kinda begging audiences not to spoil it for others. He was THAT fond of it.
Whenever you see other people being stupid in a movie (Mrs. Carmody, Brent Norton the lawyer, Jim the employee), even if their stupidity is just bravado or intellectualism or piety in a vain attempt to assuage their own fear, you naturally identify with whoever's being sensible. David is an odd choice for a "main character" - he's just an illustrator, not a doctor or cop or hunter or anyone useful in an apocalypse situation - but people look to him because he's sensible. That conceit is exposed by the resolution of the movie, however; remember when Dale/Jeffrey DeMunn's character said, "You scare people badly enough, you can get 'em to do anything They'll turn to whoever promises a solution"? The irony is, when he himself, David, Andrea and that other old lady see that they're out of gas in the mist, what do they do? In retrospect, the worst thing they could have possibly done, even if it seemed sensible at the time. So the "moral of the story" (which I credit Darabont with, not King) isn't "never lose hope" or that Mrs. Carmody was right (another hot take I've read over the years); the escapees in that car were no better than Mrs. Carmody or Horton or Jim. Their sensibility did not protect them from letting their fears make a bad decision appear like a good one. And that is why the ending is so bleak- anyone, even "main characters" can roll the dice and lose against an indifferent, hostile universe.
@@JackDanReact only thing I can think of is them hearing the monsters outside and David thinking bout how his son said "don't let the monsters get me no matter what" and I mean he didn't 😅 but even in that case it was did in maybe a bit too much in a rush
This was not Steven King’s ending for the book. Darabont changed it to this ending. Steven King said he likes this ending way more than the ending of his book.
I was never so glad to see a holy roller take a can of peas and a bullet to the noggin!! 😏 Most annoying character ever!! Also fun to see half the cast of The Walking Dead! Love Carol!! 😁
The people who are saying he should have waited don't understand that they were driving for hours and there was no end to the mist. Once they ran out of gas, they were doomed since there was no gas station or, if there was one, they couldn't get out of the car to pump the gas. If he had five bullets, he would have shot himself too. It looked hopeless and he did not want them to suffer a fate worse than death with those creatures. All the people in the car nodded their heads for him to do it. It's sad all the way around.
@RealBradMiller Some say no because whatever was inside the church lady made her "prophecies" what would happen. So when she said sacrificing the kid would mean the end of the mist, she was right. So if the kid stayed alive, so would the mist. If you rewatch the movie, you can see that anytime she'd speak of what was going to happen, it would come true. And scared people flocked to her giving her more power and power to whatever was controlling her.
They... could have gotten out to pump gas. The fog isn't poison it's just full of monsters. They just need to be CAREFUL. They could have also pulled up next to other cars and checked them for gas, siphoned gas. They could have also not waited until THE LAST SECOND to check their bullet count and instead said "Okay well if we''re all going out anyway, let's at least try to risk out lives to gas up the car and get SOMEONE out." Also since the dad's plan was to die by monster anyway, he could have left the gun with them and gone scouting, if he didn't come back they could have used it or if they were attacked they could have used it, same results. They didn't have to do it THAT MOMENT. The problem isn't that they DID it, the thing they did was a reasonable choice. The problem was the circumstances leading up to them doing it and the circumstances under which they did it. They did it under no duress with no thought, waiting, alternate options considered, or anything done to try to prevent them reaching that point.

That first scene, the guy painting.... it's actually a classic thing for Stephen King to do... reference his own work in his work... that painting is of "The Dark Tower"... which is a hugely famous series of Stephen King books. This movie "The Mist" is based on a Stephen King story.
Warning sirens like that are NOT uncommon, even in small towns. We had one in my town that had 3000 people in it. Mostly for Tornados, but any warning could be alerted this way

So, in Hawaii, they were tsunami warnings mowt likely, here in most of the mainland US they are used for tornadoes, and maybe even earthquakes iirc. I lived near one that went off every Wednesday... It was the Wednesday Alarm, apparently.
Yup, it's how we keep the tornados away! It hurts their sensitive hearing and is a great way to deter them from inhabited areas without harming them. :)
Funny you mention zombies. Frank Darabont went on to direct the first season of The Walking Dead and brought several of these actors to the show. The soldier that got sacrificed even wound up a zombie. Thomas Jane was supposed to be the lead but was already booked when the show was greenlit. So then one of you British came in and stole the job. Stop stealing our jowbs.

I thought this messed up ending was an alternate one, like a cut version. The version I remember goes right to the army guys rolling in, before he shoots anyone.
Not sure if it's been mentioned in the comments yet or not, but there's a black & white version of this film, which I prefer. It hides the dated CGI well & gives the film more of a 1950's sci-fi B-movie feel to it.
That really depressing song underscoring the finale, is "The Host of Seraphim" by Dead Can Dance. Wait until you see how they use that in the movie "Baraka." 😈
You fellas keep talking about using fans to fly around and clear the mist... But you never thought if it was actually fans that _caused_ the mist. We need dehumidifiers, and we need them now!!

I hope these "as we go" helps 1. In context it is similar to what King did with "The Stand", except in this case it's monsters and not a virus. 2. Jeffery DeMunn is known as a favorite of director Frank Darabont, who has cast him in all four of his films: "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), "The Green Mile" (1999), and "The Mist" (2007). All King adaptations. He was also in what King himself says "Storm of the Century" was such a good screenplay that he adapted into a book. 3. William Sadler also was in "Shawshank" and "The Green Mile". 4. Frances Sternhagen was in "Misery" by King. 5. Marcia Gay Harden kills it. 6.King wanted to play the big guy that goes out with the rope around his waist "brass balls" but Darabont shot him down. 7. This is not how the book ends. Darabont wanted this ending. King later said that as horrific that it is he likes it better. What makes this ending more devastating is he has to live with it the rest of his life 🥵 8. The picture of the cowboy is an Easter egg from King's "Dark Tower series 9. The cool thing about this story is, since the creatures are from a different dimension, they could be anything. 10. Intelligence is knowing that there was monsters outside and scared animals inside. Wisdom is knowing the animals were in the mist and the monsters were inside the supermarket. 😂

Monster House is a legit excellent movie. My little yellow house is gonna be dressed up as it for Halloween this year!! Broken terracotta pots for teeth, pink pool noodle made to look like a brain in the attic window, LED candles to look like eyes in the windows, and anything else I can think of before then! 🥂

I'm enjoying the dynamic you guys have, lots of fun. I watched this movie years ago and it really ramps up the tension as the shoppers slowly lose their thin veneer of civility. There is a real sense of menace. Fear can make us do terrible things. It leaves you wondering who are the monsters. Some great character acting too. The ending left me gutted, imagine having to make that choice. I'm working my way through your other reactions and look forward to more in the future.

Jokes aside, the part when they run out of gas is legit beautiful. they do so much with just looks and silence. and after they understand what the plan is, they all just sit for moment in their own thoughts, looking out the window.
I HATE the ending of this movie. It's SO stupid. -_- Literally if they had waited what, ONE minute? It's SO ludicrous. It's not even dark or sad it's just DUMB. It doesn't make me feel sad it makes me angry. In the original story the characters just drove off into the mist, their fates unknown. What a better ending that would have been than this absolute trashfire ending. The only redeeming aspect of it is knowing the mom from the beginning made it through the Mist ALONE and found her kids. Like tell me more, I want to know about her journey! Everything else? Absolute awful writing. If he'd stumbled on, after maybe a day or something of failing to encounter monsters and THEN run into the military, maybe I could have given it a bit more reluctant of a pass but LESS THAN A MINUTE? First of all they should have been looking for more gas. What kind of morons just use all their gas? Two, if they did run out they could have said "Okay there's four bullets and five of us, since Dad's the most fit one here, how about he goes and scouts, see if he can find another car or more gas. If he doesn't come back, we use the bullets. If we get attacked, we use the bullets." It's so infuriating because it relies on these characters who had a will to survive and who were intelligent and clever suddenly completely giving up on life and any sense of intelligence SECONDS before being rescued. This movie is honestly a masterpiece up until the end, probably one of my favorite post-apocalyptic monster movies but that ending ruins the whole thing. Whenever I watch it I just turn it off after the big guy shows up and leave it with the canon ending that they drove off into the Mist.
My friend and I held eachother as we cried at the ending. She knew what would happen but she didn't tell me lol. We both cried. Doesn't help the dad looks like my own so it hit hard.
I had the mirror experience: My friend and I hit the end and then she knew what would happen. I was so sad, just heartbroken until the tanks rolled up. I spent about 30 seconds raging and then the rest of the time CACKLING with her because it was so stupid, I couldn't breathe. However, I can see why having the emotional connection to the dad could inspire the opposite reaction, his acting was absolutely fantastic. It was a heartwrenching performance and I can't hold that against anyone.

I don't remember which movie it was but there was a movie that had an old lady that was SO much like my grandmother and she didn't even really do much of anything, I think she just was in one scene and was just nice to the main characters and the personality and acting was just so on point I just started bawling so I totally get it.
