I love the MiSTer stack, but let's face it - it's not exactly the most polished-looking device in your living room. In this video, I'm going to fix that problem by building the MiSTer Mini Console - a wonderful MiSTer console design, created by a talented designer in the maker community.
In this video, I'm going to take you through the process of how I built one - from 3D printing the pieces, to modifying a cheap USB hub, and wiring it all up. After it's up and running, we'll give it a spin and check out the new Nintendo 64 MiSTer core by playing a bit of Super Mario 64.

Can't wait til dedicated mister systems are one day manufactured. I know emulation has become almost 1 to 1 with original hardware but, who doesn't want a MISTER? Great work on this video. 👍🏾💯

I’m building one of these right now! My 3D print is arriving tomorrow. Do you have a link for the Digikey switch? There’s 4,281 of them on Digikey and would be super helpful to have a link. Did I miss it in your description?

Thanks for sharing. I just finished following your example and built my own mister mini console. Desoldering for the first time ever was a learning experience the glue they put on that USB hub wasn't fun.

Great, I definitely was trying to be conscious of that this time 😊 Re: workshop tour, it’s something I’ll definitely consider. I actually have 2 workshops - the one you see in the videos is where I do all of my electronics work, but I also have a detached wood shop that I haven’t really showed on camera yet. I feel like both are in a constant state of flux, but I’ll think about what a tour of one or both spaces might look like. Thanks for the suggestion!

Amazing video as always Ken! 👍 I couldn't quite see but does your MiSTer Mini support ethernet, SNAC and MT32-Pi?

Thanks! It does support SNAC and MT32-Pi (via the SNAC port - it uses the IO board from the stack), but ethernet is not ported to back to the case. If you want something that supports ethernet, Todd’s full sized version does have an rj45 connector ported out - www.printables.com/model/545650-mister-fpga-full-size-console-case

I guess my only concerns might be enough power for the USB ports, and lack of access to the ethernet port? I may have to look at the larger case.

I haven't yet seen any USB power issues, but I'm also usually just playing with one controller. Ethernet port access is something I've heard others mention as a disadvantage as well. In my case, I'm fine using the wireless dongle - but faster network copying would be nice

I want to see either a MiSTer or raspberry pi build that can take original game cartridges. I don’t mean just dumping the rom I mean actually playing the cartridge

8:05 This confused me a bit. You do have a fan but no passive cooler? This might reduce the effectiveness of the fan.

I noticed you didn't walk in Mario 64, does the N64 beta have issues with the sensitivity of the analogue stick? Unrelated to the subject of the video I know lol

No isssues. My guess is it might have to do with whatever controller was being used.

No issues for me either, usually USB controllers give a +/-127 range on the analog sticks but the N64 core maps them to +/-85 to avoid sensitivity issues. You can walk very slowly on Mario 64 just fine.

Yep, no issues walking - I was just being heavy-thumbed while playing the game. I was using a Hyperkin USB adapter, and it had some other issues with certain buttons not working, but I haven’t spent too much time troubleshooting it. I need to take the time to build an N64 SNAC anyway

My only improvement suggestion would be to smooth out the shell and buttons. They all have that tell-tale sign of a 3D print: the layer lines.

Why. PETG instead of PLA?

Mainly because I've found PETG to be less brittle and less susceptible to warping at higher temperatures than PLA over time. For this print, it doesn't really matter much, but I've changed my default to PETG a while ago and haven't really looked back. I also like the textured finish from the build plate on flat surfaces like this, and PLA doesn't adhere well to the textured plate.

The MiSTer looks like an even uglier abomination of what the Raspberry Pi looks like with everything attached. To 3D print your own case and add some plugs and switches was the best thing you could do to make it look nice.
