I am Métis from near this area. My Great Great Grandmother was there, during this rebellion. She was a little Native girl, and hid under a Red River Cart to escape her enemies, and survive. It’s an interesting place to go if you can, Batoche. The Rebellion is one of the most important & exciting things to happen in all of Canadian history! (IMO)

The point you are all missing is that Scot settlers arrived in Canada and later New Zealand and those settlers were intermingling with indigenous people is because the Scots did NOT have to learn about tribal issues. They innately understood because they also were fiercely clannish. They were essentially putting on shoes that had the same ‘fit’ as their homeland. They knew about land, tribal or clan dynamics. The same thing happened with Maori tribes in New Zealand. It explains why most Maori families in the South or New Zealand where the white whalers had settlements, have got Scots surname.

Our history here in Hong Kong is so wrapped up in this story. Many of the young Canadian soldiers who came here to fight in WW2 were Metis. And some of those part Scots. And of course most of the big not Chinese families here are Scottish.

Here in Manitoba we have a holiday in February, Louis Riel Day. Since it's a day off, I always ask people if they want to "hang" 😆

The Metis fights are similar to the wars waged by Seminoles, Sioux and Nez Pearce peoples in the States.

The First Nations people had called this land home, not for generations, but for 15,000 years, at the very least.

I have ancestry in the French Canadian community as well as scottish. It's interesting to get a better understanding in Canadian history as I am more familiar in US history seeing that I was born in the US and a US citizen. Don't know much how Canada began. Very similar how the US began. Sadly it included persecution of the natives that lived here first.

Both sides of my ancestry where original red river colony inhabitants and I'm told that Gabriel Dumont is a direct family ancestor on my gran mother's side witch is Lataune* my mother's side is landrie and my fathers side is Trotchie or Trottier pronounced the same *not shur of the spelling it is my granmothers madian name her maired name is Landrie I was adopted when I was 6 and my name changed from Trotchie to Sather my mother remaried a good man and father to me and my siblings not menny men would marry a woman with 6 kids and raise them as his own . I'm so very prowed of the man I chose to call dad !

Why are some commenters referring to themselves as "scotch"? Scotch is the name for Scottish whiskey not a person and a Scot is a person originating from Scotland.

1. We're not simply mixed race, we are an ethnicity. Our mix was from a very specific time & place, we have specific cultural traditions, language, and political governing structures. 2. It was not a rebellion, we were not subjects of the crown. the HBC sold land that didn't belong to it. None of the First Nations or Metis people on the plains were subjects of the crown and we did not consent. Please consider changing the title to reflect this. The language you use to educate about us matters, it shapes how people see it. Ultimately, the language you've selected now contributes to the systemic erasure of our history. The term rebellion was used to paint us as people who stalled progress and worked to undermine the narrative Canada was trying to sell abroad about free and open land for white settlers. We've all seen those posters and heard the stories about the savages. Canada pushed Metis people onto the road allowances and worked very hard to paint us as worthless, lazy drunks, after. Racism is alive and well, please do your part to change those perceptions. We are more than the story of one man. Lii Michif Wiiya. We are opitemisiwak - those who own themselves. We are free. Hey that’s like my family. I did my genealogy and one of my ancestors hid some of the eastern Cherokee, the Weaver family was their “Christian” names. Anyway my dads Scottish ancestors hid the weaver family in Tennessee then Texas, and married their sons to Weaver daughters.

It's sad to see yet another story that leaves out Augustin Parisien's actions on the day of Thomas Scott's Execution, this is from Charles Boulton's memoir written in 1885 "Six soldiers had been chosen to shoot Scott. I have here again to write the name of a man whose behaviour in that circumstance reflects on him the greatest honour. Augustin Parisien, one of the six soldiers, declared openly that he would not shoot at Scott; in fact, he took off the cap from his gun before the word of command ‘present’ was given. Of the five balls remaining, only two hit the poor victim, one on the left shoulder, and the other in the upper part of the chest above the heart. Had the other soldiers missed the mark undesignedly, or had they intentionally aimed away from Riel’s victim, it is not known. However that may be, as the two wounds were not sufficient to cause death, at least sudden death, a man, named Guillemette stepped forward and discharged the contents of a pistol close to Scott’s head while he was lying on the ground. This ball, however, took a wrong direction. It penetrated the upper part of the left cheek and came out somewhere about the cartilage of the nose. Scott was still not dead, but that did not prevent his butchers from placing him alive and still speaking, in a kind of coffin made of four rough boards. It was nailed and plated in the south-eastern bastion, and an armed soldier was placed at the door. This would seem like a story made at one’s ease, if there were not several credible witnesses who, between the hours of five and six in the evening, heard the unfortunate Scott speaking from under the lid of his coffin, and it was known that he had been shot at half-past twelve. What a long and horrible agony, and what ferocious cruelty was this on the part of his butchers. The words heard and understood by the French Metis were only these ‘My God, My God!’ Some English Metis, and those understanding English, heard distinctly these words: ‘For God’s sake take me out of here or kill me.’ Towards 11 o’clock - that is, after ten and a half hours of frightful agony - a person, whose name I shalt withhold for the present, went into the bastion, and, according to some, gave him the finishing stroke with a butcher’s knife, with a pistol, according to others. After having inflicted the last blow on poor Scott, that person said, as he was coming back from the bastion: ‘He is dead this time!’ The corpse was left for a few days in the south-eastern bastion, being guarded by the soldiers, relieving each other in turn."

The european part of the metis were overwelmingly from frenc canadian origin. And it is important to realise that they were also catholics.

Metis are very disadvantaged but they were generally better off on the racial hierarchy compared to Inuits who in turn were more well off then First Nations yeah.

I live in Southern Alberta, and my Scottish Great-Grandfather Haight married a Cree woman - it was not uncommon. Sadly, the track record of the Canadian Government with First Nations and Metis people has not improved greatly. How racist can it be in Canada? I laughed when I saw the posers going to "BLM" protests here - jumping on the bandwagon. Anti-black racism is not a huge part of Canadian history - nothing like what Asians and the Irish experienced, for example. All those communities have had a chance to heal, move on and become part of Modern Canada. Not so for the First Nations and Metis. The government here has a looooooong history of saying one thing and doing another. The Department of Indian affairs and the Treaty System have never worked and should be abolished. Let the Native People's of Canada negotiate a relationship with the rest of this nation now - today - in the modern world. Until we do that, all the posing politicians and apologies and talk will do nothing, and further generations will be trapped in a cycle they cannot escape on their own.
