There are over 200 kagura troupes in Hiroshima Prefecture working to pass down and preserve the rich heritage of the traditional performing art of kagura. Before COVID-19, kagura troupes would perform to large audiences at events, festivals, and even kagura competitions. With international travel still not back to what it once was, we thought we’d bring the magic of kagura to you at home, complete with English subtitles, until the day when travel to Japan is possible.

【Synopsis】
About 1000 years ago, when the capital of Japan was in Kyoto, the aristocrats held all the political power, living in opulence and excess while the people in the countryside lived in poverty. Angered by the divide between rich and poor, a warrior named Taira-no-Masakado set out to begin his own government in the eastern provinces. However, when the Kyoto government heard of his plans, they sent the Imperial Army crush the rebellion, killing Masakado and his entire family, save for his daughter.
Takiyasha-hime is the story of Masakado’s daughter and her quest to avenge her father. She prays for seven days and nights at a shrine to be given magical powers so she will be strong enough to take on imperial forces. Granted her wish for power, she then heads to the eastern provinces to gather men who are still loyal to her father and their cause. Meanwhile, back in Kyoto, rumors of Takiyasha-hime’s powers begin to grow and General Mitsukuni is ordered to head east to face her. After a great battle, Takiyasha-hime is defeated.
【あらすじ】
東の国の新皇を名乗った平将門（たいらのまさかど）は、天慶（てんぎょう）の乱で藤原秀郷（ふじわらのひでさと）・平貞盛（たいらのさだもり）の軍に敗れ去ります。
平将門の娘・五月姫（さつきひめ）は、父の怨念を果たす為、貴舟（きふね）の社（やしろ）に「願」をかけ、満願と共に貴舟の神より妖術を授かります。互月姫は、名を「滝夜叉姫」と改め、父の因縁の郷、下 総の国・猿島（さしま）の地に立ち戻り、多くの手下を従えて反乱を企てます。
陰陽師・大宅中将光闊（おおやのちゅうじょうみつくに）らは、朝命を奉じて下総の国へと向かい、陰陽の術と邪心の妖術の激しい戦いとなりますが、滝夜叉姫の朝廷に対する復讐は成らず、無惨に敗れ去っていくという物語です。
