It is almost thirty years since Brett Barnes last spoke to a journalist. The last time he gave an interview was in 1993, aged eleven, when he took to the airwaves to defend his friend Michael Jackson against allegations that he was a molester of young boys. But the Barnes family quickly learned not to engage with the media when it came to Jackson. Attempts by tabloid reporters to hunt them down after that became so intrusive that they were driven from their home for months. When they went off grid, media outlets instead began offering tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to anybody who was prepared to say they’d seen him behave inappropriately with young friends like Brett Barnes.
Ever since then, ugly, graphic sexual allegations about Jackson and Brett have been published in books, magazines and newspapers and have been broadcast by trashy tabloid TV shows. Rarely, if ever, has anybody sought to fact-check the stories - nor have outlets ever really seemed to care when Brett explicitly refuted them. But for almost three decades, he chose to bite his tongue rather than engage with a media industry that seemed to have its own agenda.
In 2019, Brett - by then happily settled down with his wife and their young children - had his peace shattered by a reality TV show called Leaving Neverland. Strangers on the internet began contacting him to warn him that the show included his name and likeness and strongly insinuated that Jackson had sexually abused him - something nobody involved in making the show had seen fit to inform him of. He immediately contacted its maker, HBO, to strenuously deny the claims and request that they be removed. HBO told him to get lost and the show was sold all over the world, for consumption by millions of people.
Since then, Brett’s world has been turned upside-down. Aggressive journalists have shown up on his doorstep and told him lies to try to trick him into giving them interviews. He has been harassed and trolled on a constant basis for three years by anonymous social media accounts, accusing him of being a liar, an enemy of abuse victims and a shill for a child molester.
After three years of relentless abuse, defamation and invasion of his privacy, Brett decided it was finally time to speak out. On May 14th, 2022, he granted Charles Thomson a world exclusive, no-holds-barred interview. No question or topic was off limits. There was only one platform he was prepared to let broadcast it: The MJCast.
For the first time ever, he spoke in depth about his relationship with Jackson, starting from the very beginning and explaining how it evolved over almost 20 years - from witnessing first-hand the 1993 police raid of Neverland Ranch, to testifying at Jackson’s 2005 criminal trial, and all the way up to his final conversation with Jackson just days before his death. Along the way, for the first time ever, he had the opportunity to give unequivocal answers to the many allegations which had been published and broadcast about him over the years - a subject which caused him to become emotional on more than one occasion.
The conversation is being released on June 13th, 2022 - the 17th anniversary of the verdicts in Jackson’s 2005 criminal trial.
This episode was edited by Charlie Carter.

This poor man has been through so much. Brett and Michael were friends for 20 years. There was a reason for that. Brett never wanted anything from Michael. He was just a sweet, simple kid with decent parents. Unlike the Chandler family, the Arviso family, and Safechuck and Robson jackals. This interview is beautiful and heartbreaking. You can HEAR his pain. He tries very hard to compose himself. Only breaks down slightly a couple of times. Charles Thomson has always been a journalist of great integrity. We've read everything he has written and we've listened to him report for years on this tragic story. Brett trusts Mr. Thomson and knows that he is not being asked the hard questions for sensationalism. What an incredible interview. I pray that dear Brett finds some peace, some closure, after telling his story. What they've done to this man is a crime. I hope this interview will be heard by the millions of people that questioned a purely innocent friendship.

Thanks MJCast for being able to facilitate an interview like this, and thanks to Charles for asking all of the right questions. Because of all the harassment Brett has received on Twitter, I figured he wasn’t fazed by it. I was disappointed to hear that I was wrong. He and his family are deeply affected by what people say. It’s funny that Dan Reed and the multiple people that harass Brett claim to be standing up for victims. However, in their ignorance they’re creating victims.

This interview is such a gem right now. Massive respect for Brett Barnes for keeping it real for 30 years now. I have also to point out the fact that he downplayed the ''sleeping'' narrative, since it is where most people get scandalized (understandably), I'm so glad that he confirms it wasn't MJ and the children alone, but with family members as well, and also the fact that he didn't make a big deal out of it, calling it ''just sleeping''.

Amazing episode !! Here are some things I realized during the whole conversation: - Brett seems to be not the outgoing type. I feel you, man! - Michael's friendship with the Barnes lasted because I think the parents find Michael a nice person, nothing more. He was seen a genuine friend, not a money making machine; nor the megastar he is and the fame and money that come with it. Glad Mr Barnes agreed to speak after 29 years publicly to tell the truth about his and his family's friendship with MJ.
@StilettoCutsQuick.
@StilettoCutsQuick. Год назад
I agree. They didn’t take advantage of MJ and hearing this interview Brett seems like a nice down to earth genuine person. Since he and his family were not expecting anything but friendship from MJ is most likely why the friendship last. Plus Brett seems like a very like able soul. Wade wanted a career and I believe Safechuck’s family wanted a house and money (I could be wrong, but I think I heard this). It is unbelievable that after everything MJ did for these families that they turned on him when he no longer would support them financially. No wonder why MJ cut them out of his life, he could see the friendship was not authentic. Like Brett said at the end of their lives he will sleep with a clear conscience. Bless you Brett and your family.

I'm sorry...I don't like how you said "totally believable interview in support of Michael". I don't think it was or should have been "in support of Michael". I think it's about telling the truth. When you say "In support of Michael" that doesn't mean the same thing to me as telling the truth. I believe Brett was telling his truth. That is way more important. Because you can be in support of someone and it doesn't mean you are telling the truth....people can be in support of someone and be hiding or covering for them. Happens all the time. We need to be careful in how we word things. I'm a Michael fan...but I'm also more interested in the truth and facts. I would never want anyone to cover for him if he was doing bad things. I'm a fan...not a stan. I can handle that Michael had flaws like everyone.

People believe Michael is guilty because of the families that were seemingly close to him turning and speaking out against him but some of these families (like the Robsons and Arvizos) were only close to Michael because they pushed their way to be close to Michael (like Joy Robson and Janet Arvizo) just so they could use and take from him. This is documented. That’s the reason why the Robsons, the Chandlers, and the Arvizos have the heart to turn on him because they never had genuine intentions from Day 1. They just wanted to get close to Michael to BEG and TAKE but as Brett stated in this interview He and his family never really asked anything of Michael and wouldn’t beg for things like the other families and that’s the reason why Michael and Brett have stayed close throughout the years 💕✨

@@mennamentos-ht1myYes and Michael was avoiding them. That’s something Gavin testified to in the trial. He said it hurt his feelings but all of the celebrities they were trying to scam were avoiding them, not just Michael. George Lopez testified that he called off a fundraiser when he realized they were scammers and this was before Gavin even met MJ. Jay Leno testified that he directed his staff to not allow calls from Gavin through to him anymore and Chris Tucker testified that he warned MJ to be careful when it came to that family

Wondered when you guys were going to upload this on YT :) Such a good, interesting, informative interview - respect to Brett for breaking his (entirely understandable) silence, you could hear in his voice how nervous and shy he was, and you totally get a sense of just how devastating the media/social media BS has been for him and his family. It broke my heart when he kept apologising in case his anecdotes made him sound big-headed, and when he worried in case he was betraying MIchaels confidence by doing this interview. Such a humble guy. Well done to Charlie Thomson too, he handled the interview brilliantly, and all of his journalistic integrity and experience really shone through in this interview. Well done MJCast in getting this world exclusive interview :)

Exactly the truth will prevail. I was not a huge MJ fan and I remember when the first accusations came out on the network news and I believed MJ was guilty because that was the narrative and how could the news be wrong. When leaving neverland came out, something seemed really off. I did not watch the documentary, but I started watching RU-vid and the various interviews with Wade and James. Their claims seemed very far fetched. I took a deep dive and listened to everything I could find on this and I believe MJ is innocent and all these families took advantage of MJ and as soon as they could not get any more money from him they started extorted him and when that didn’t work the accused him of these horrible lies. So yes the truth will prevail. Anyone who cares to really look into this can see what the truth is. I have also become a fan of MJ for his talent and his humanity.

Here's the proof ! Brett Barnes doesn't gain anything from this interview but he has many things to loose including his privacy again, but he did it anyway for his dear friend and his own conscience. That is so utterly deplorable and disrespectful. They have continued to portray him in that way against his will and completely ignoring what he actually has to say in the matter. I truly hope you read these comments, and know you are loved. How you ended this interview speaks volumes, you said he was your brother, what a beautiful way to describe a beautiful, innocent relationship, your best friend, Michael was blessed to have you in his life, and he knew sincerity when he saw it that's why your friendship lasted and would have remained if he had not left ys sadly. It's amazing how you said you didn't go to his funeral, yet wade did everything he could to be there, I think that speaks volumes about him. I don't need to spell it out. The sadness in your voice has had me in tears everytime I listen to you, you miss him very much, understandably, but please hold your head up, walk tall and know Michael is so very proud of you, hold onto your memories, abd you will see him again in a better place, he will be happy to see his true friend ❤️ I would love to hear from you , and welcome you here to Ireland, where I know Michael had spent time and felt at ease here, no one bothered him he was allowed to have peace. Many asked why MJ had a lifelong friendship with Brett. First of all, MJ must have viewed Brett's family as a wholesome, loving and nurturing, etc. family which MJ admired AND needed in his busy life. Brett stated that he saw MJ as a friend, & not a super-star and wasn't starry-eyed around MJ. I believe Brett is an introvert which I know MJ to be, so they were compatible in how they processed their relationship, especially as Brett got older. Also, like Brett said, he and his family were not scroungers off of MJ. It's knowledge, one of the mothers would always call & beg MJ to spend more time with her son(WR) and give him jobs. Another mother got MJ to buy them a house in L.A. and they would pay him back-BUT THEY (JS) NEVER DID! Another mom had spending sprees with MJ's credit cards in MJ's town with his driver chauffeuring the Arviso family-who claimed MJ imprisoned them in Neverland. And the first mother got jewelry while her ex-husband movie and if he told the world a defaming story(WHICH HE LIED ABOUT MJ). Brett and his mother, dad &family, were NOT LIKE these other families!!!!! And MJ was discerning and knew who he could trust-Brett. So, thank you Brett and Charles for an excellent interview and Charles for your wise and flawless interviewing. ~~~~~Rest in Peace, Michael~~~~~

Can't or won't say it, protect yourself from it, and so on... Such arguments have many in favor. It saddens me that Brett Barnes is being treated this way by the media and many people just to further this agenda. His whole family suffers just so these two guys can embellish their story. He was forced to say these things; I’m sure that if Michael was here (and when he was), he understood how abusive a father can be, and how you’re forced into things that you don’t want to say or do.

That is the difference between Brett Barnes and Safechuck and Robson. Brett Barnes never wanted anything from Michael, he never asked for something or wanted that he could meet someone through Michael. He had built his friendship with Michael on trust. He didn't want that somebody paid for him to go to Michael's funeral. Robson's mom said, she wanted that Michael would take him to the dangerous tour. Robson wanted to use Michael's connection to get into the dance industry. He wanted to get married at Michael's Neverland Ranch, even though those were Michael's worst days of his life, he wanted to film on his land, he wanted a music label, he wanted to be together with Michael's niece, he wanted ticket for all his family to Michael's funeral, he wanted to be a part of Michael private funeral. Safechuck wanted that Michael paid for his house. Robson and Safechuck are accusing Michael's company of being responsible for the alleged abuse, claiming that they either had a duty of care or covered up the crime. However, it's ironic that if the alleged abuse were true (which is not the case), and Robson committed perjury in 2005 (when he was in his twenties), he would actually be responsible for concealing any real abuse, making him the true 'cover-up' by lying under oath. Brett said, if Michael would have abused a child and he would not have said anything, he would be a monster!

Also why a thirty year old man would make a constant telephone calls to a five year old boy he never even met? What’s the appropriate point of that? And the same thing was happening to Wade in the same time period, the same pattern involving the hole family, making them feel special and easy to manipulate. And what was the reason for Brett to be the tour boy at the first place for such a long time when he should be at school? What was the purpose of such intense interest of the boy from age 5 to 12 and then they only connected once a year? These questions were never asked and answered.

This whole leaving Neverland movie is hilarious. First of all all the pics of MJ in Safechucks home are of him in the same clothes. Not multiple visits like they made out. Probably based over one day. Then you got Wade sitting talking, it's almost like Dan is ushering him from behind the lens. So Wade says "he played with my 7 year old penis". Who says that? You'd say 'he played with my penis'. It's one thing after another. Literally nothing is proof of guilt at all. Literally the video where MJ says "happy birthday little one" means sod all, but they used that 'little one' for making up stories etc about how they spoke to each other. Done get me wrong they have edited it to be like he is guilty but all of their 'evidence' means jack shit. Means nothing. If MJ "cut them out" like they said, then why not prosecute back in the early 90s? It's all BS.

Long post ahead but I had to post these thoughts that I have had for 28 years. This podcast brought everything back up for me. I appreciate this interview for a number of reasons. Mainly, it gave me a much better sense of how Michael was with these boys he spent time with. It gave me a better idea of what those experiences were really like from the inside. I know people will be surprised to hear this (and yes, I'm a Michael fan) but I am also a student of human behavior/psychology. I'm a former journalist, researcher, and current psychology student. Brett's experiences with Michael were disturbing to me. I will explain why. Brett said he met Michael when he was 5. He did admit he didn't get to know Michael well at 5...but he did meet him at that age. He started to get to know Michael at around 8 or so. I noticed Michael usually met all the boys at a very young age. Most of the boys he met were under 10 when he met them. This is very important. This means their interactions with Michael would be imprinted in their brain. The reason this is important to mention is because Michael was meeting these boys when they were at their most impressionable. This means to them anything Michael did would make sense and be considered OK because they were too young to know anything different. If you factor in Michael being famous/rich...that even more complicates things. We know Michael was at a point in his life where no one could tell him "No". This means the parents of all these children probably saw some incentives for themselves in the process. So, everyone was getting something out of these interactions. Even Brett did admit Michael would take his family on trips and pay for everything. Of course Michael did. And some of that is financial manipulation...but I won't get into that here. But let's be honest...Michael was clearly getting something out of these interactions too otherwise they wouldn't have lasted as long as they did. So...I kind of get annoyed when people just want to say the parents are to blame and were always using Michael. I think in every situation it was a win-win for everyone in the beginning (including for Wade, James and their families). I feel like a lot of people are scared to say that. But I will and I just did. Michael was getting what he wanted out of spending time with these boys just like the parents were appreciating what letting Michael spend time with their children offered them. Everyone was getting something out of the deal. Let's not play pretend here. And I felt like Brett basically admitted that in his own way. And I appreciated it because it confirmed what I always thought anyway. Brett confirmed everything I had always wondered about. It is clear to me that Michael was affectionate and a bit touchy. That's fine with kids that are your own or in your family....but it can be interpreted in the wrong ways when it is children you aren't related to. Do you see what I'm saying? Brett met Michael so young that any type of physical touching that Michael may have displayed toward him would have been looked at as OK anyway because he met Michael so young. I even got the sense that even Brett looks at the situation a bit differently now that he has his own children. I heard him hesitate at certain times when they questioned him regarding his own children. I was not surprised by that. It's because he is older now and lived a regular life outside the Michael Jackson bubble. Life is very different outside the Michael Jackson bubble. I'm not suggesting that Michael abused anyone. Let me be clear. But I AM saying Michael clearly had boundary issues. I think that's because of how he was raised. I think the parents of these children allowed Michael to be physically affectionate with their children because he was Michael (the superstar rich Michael Jackson). If he was Tim down the street they wouldn't have done it. I believe Michael had serious boundary issues and was physically affectionate with other people's children and people let it happen because he was Michael. But in reality (outside the Michael Jackson bubble) most people would know it's not OK to hug and kiss (not sexually) other people's kids. Plus, these kids were so young...who even said they wanted to be hugged and kissed on...did Michael ever ask them if they wanted to be hugged and kissed on? Why don't people talk about these things?! Kids are allowed to ask for boundaries with adults too. But...again...it goes back to Michael meeting these kids so young. They were so young and excited because it was Michael that they let a lot of stuff slide or thought it was acceptable. Under normal circumstances, most people would know it wasn't OK. But again...that's what seems to happen when people got caught up in the Michael Jackson bubble. Non-sexual touch is never OK if the other person is uncomfortable. That's my point. I believe it's totally possible some of the kids around Michael were comfortable with these when they were young (because they were young and impressionable). But now that they are older and have children of their own they are starting to look back and question some things. And I think that's fair. I think that's OK to do. Even Brett basically admitted that you do get swooped up in the whole Michael Jackson thing and that sometimes rationality goes out the window. He mentioned this phenomenon several times throughout the interview and I think that was very telling.

You’re saying that Brett met Michael when he was 5 but admitted he didn’t get to know Michael well at that age? ..that he didn’t start to know Michael until he was around 8?.. Brett did not say that he met Michael when he was 5. He said that he met Michael for the first time when Michael invited him and his family to Neverland in December 1991. Brett would’ve been around 9 years old in December 1991 when he first met Michael ..not 5. You’re saying that Brett started to get to know Michael at age 8 ..but Brett said that his friendship with Michael developed when he was 5 years old when Michael would regularly call him and his family starting at the end of 1987 or the beginning of 1988. Most human beings have an innate desire for friendship and belonging and community.. Those desires are satiated when we maintain friendships. It’s beneficial to us as human beings. There are several beneficial reasons to maintain a friendship (mentally, spiritually, socially..) but the main reason for keeping someone as a friend should be because you care for the individual and enjoy them for who they are as a person. It shouldn’t be about what incentives you can get from the person. You have to look at the actions of a person as an individual to determine whether or not they are a friend. Wade Robson’s mother asked of Michael continuously. Gavin Arvizo’s mother asked of Michael continuously. Their relationships with Michael was about what Michael could do for their children. Gavin and his family took from Michael until he cut them off and then that’s when they accused him of abuse. Michael did not matter to them ..only what he could give them but that was not the case with Brett and his family. Brett and his family were true friends. Not all parents are the same. Each relationship is different A child may not know what’s inappropriate but when you become an adult and you gain experience you should be able to have a better understanding of what’s appropriate and what’s not. There are adults who have had abusive behaviors imprinted on them as children and because they were children they did not know better and became used to the behavior but as adults they are still able to look back and realize the abuse and hold their abusers accountable. Brett is an adult in his late 30’s and recalls his friendship with Michael as only being a true friendship and nothing abusive. I think Brett hesitated because there can be a fine and sensitive line between what’s appropriate and what’s abusive because predators use seemingly innocent situations to prey on their victims. Any situation can quickly become dangerous if you leave your child in the hands of the wrong person. Even Michael Jackson hesitated when explaining that he would not just let his kids sleep with anyone but if someone is close family and he knows them well that he would not mind allowing his kids to sleep in anyone else’s bed if he knew the person well enough and feels comfortable with them as a person. It’s because Michael Jackson was an eccentric person who had prior allegations of abuse reported against him that people see everything he did as suspect. People said Michael was weird for having sleepovers with children but Oprah would regularly have sleepovers with the girls at her school in Africa. No one makes an issue of it.

James could lie for all sorts of reasons. People’s actions and decisions can be complex and sometimes seemingly illogical. Take Jussie Smollett, for example; his actions left many baffled. It’s a reminder that the human experience is filled with layers and motivations that might not always make sense to others. Behind closed doors, within the depths of someone’s heart and mind, there’s a world we can’t fully understand. People can carry their pain and struggles in silence, which is why it’s vital to approach allegations with empathy and to rely on a fair legal process for a thorough examination of the facts.

Charles asked did Michael or anyone “threaten” Brett.. coaching as in threatening him or forcing him. Brett said No ..that he was just to tell the truth

Big difference between 'this is what happens' and 'this is what you are going to say' - coaching implies the latter

Coached means the witness is told what to say instead of the truth. Brett is saying he was not told what to say

The best part : "- Are you in denial? - Absolutely not." I don't know if this was meant to be funny but thanks for the laugh. More seriously, I believe this man. I believe MJ had special friends he did nothing illegal with, and Brett seems to be one of them. And I also believe Wade and James. 100%. I'm very sad for all of them because MJ armed them all in some way. I mean Brett's life has been ruined because of what MJ did to other boys.

What are you talking about Robson and Safechuck? Why don't you do some research and look into history? After MJ's death, Robson had financial problems and at first started selling MJ's belongings. ^He needed money) He sent a letter to MJ'Estate trying to get hired as the director for Cirque du Soleil's MJ One, but James King (a choreographer who was also on MJ's dance team) was hired, so it was natural to- hire him to choose him. . Robson was shocked and started talking about "abuse". but before that he asked his mother via email about "care" and "abuse". His mother said it never happened. He said in the LN that his family went to the Grand Canyon and he was left alone with Michael. But in 2016, his mother testified that their entire family went to the Grand Canyon. He made a video in 2007 saying that Neverland is sacred ground. He wanted to get married in Neverland. (Don't tell me he was in love with MJ back then, especially when he had a fiancée and wanted to get married!) The Safechuck family was in trouble because the garbage company was sued by associates for fraud and had to pay millions of dollars. It was only then in 2013 that Safechuck "realized" he had been "sexually abused" by MJ when he saw Robson on TV. But his mother jumped out of bed and danced when MJ died in 2009. I wonder if his mother didn't know about the "abuse" but dances when she hears a man is dead? This is creepy! Safechuck's rings. I looked closely at pictures of him when he was a child and he had no jewelry. A is a video of MJ and JS being at the jewelry store, but the interview with Broke Shields who said he got a very nice ring from MJ was "skipped". And let's not talk about the "abuse" in non-existent buildings.

I'm disgusted that you believe Robson and Safechuck's fabricated narratives. Truth is their parents wanted MJ for the money and fame. I strongly think Brett's parents weren't money-hungry hence the long duration of Michael's friendship with the Barnes.
