The Modern Club Experience is DEAD, Did Social Media Kill it?

I have been going to dance parties since I was 11 years old. Those Middle school Parties evolved into Teen Clubs, then House Parties, then College Clubs, Young Professional Bars, Ratchet Clubs, Upscale Clubs, International Clubs. Over the last 20 years the scene has changes tremendously. Less dancing and more pretending to have fun. Millennials have passed the Baton to Gen Z to see how they will carry on the club tradition. Social Media is their God so pray for us. Hope you enjoy our take on the State of the Club Scene in 2023.

I think some people are afraid to actually get loose and just have fun for fear of being recorded on someone’s instagram or Snapchat story without being judged/ clowned lol Also I think it’s better if you go with a group of mutual friends who are down to have fun, and not there to “people watch” or stand around and look cool/disinterested
@levelupeezy
@levelupeezy 11 месяцев назад
The lack of privacy really killed the club. Whatever happened in the club used to stay in the club and now people have this self inflated image. They are just too cool to do anything they used to be a place to let loose.

The nightclub is dying out because we've all become inward and self obsessed. Its all about image, people who used to go out and have fun/connect with others now just want to look cool and barely crack a smile. Covid just sped up the process. We all are plugged into our phones, social media and reels. Our attention spans cant handle real interactions anymore, because as a whole people are generally awkward, slow and just collectively trying to survive socially. (And that's okay) but now we need such high levels of attention, activity and stimulation to stay engaged. Our dopaminergic systems are absolutely shot, and if we all collectively detoxed from our vices...then maybe there'd be hope for the clubs to revive. I think festivals have become the new "club" experience.

We need to bring it back to the community anyway. Do more block parties, house parties, and local park festivals, skate parties, organize more Sunday brunches and more cultural vibes. Where we’re coming together to celebrate each other. I honestly think this is part of the crime waves in our communities. We’re not as connected as we used to be. Nobody knows each other, we’re not engaging each other like we used to back in the day. Ask yourself now, how many neighbors on your block do you know? How many can you actually hold conversations with? We’re so disconnected from each other. Bring back the community events and parties. It’s not that hard to become a community organizer! It’s very fulfilling because you’re bringing the spiritual vibes back up for your ppl. We need more of this!

You are speaking all facts, we are very disconnected, unfortunately that is the American way. We are capitalist it’s me, Me,me, but also remember other people feel the same way you do and if we are more creative, we can bring people back to those vibes. Don’t give up hope.

I grew up in the era where if you weren’t there, people talking about it the next day would make you HAVE to see it for yourself. Brother's here's a tip from an OG that still goes out alone on a regular basis and if I want, I can dress to the nines or not, and have females coming up to me asking to dance, with no problem I can meet females from all cultures/ethnicities and still get numbers, etc. You ready go to the Latin Salsa/Mambo clubs, it's the same if I go to CT, NY, DC, MD, VA, because it's the last place a man can go and still walk away respected because he's the male lead. Even if you know basic Salsa steps, which many clubs offer for a price sometimes as low as $10 or $15 to see and hear a live band depending on your part of the country there are dance classes before the hardcore dancers arrive. Also, the age range from 21-70, everybody dances with everybody, I have my pick, some places offer excellent food at a reasonable price. You can learn to dance Merengue and Bachata from the Dominican Republic, the women love these dances, and Salsa/Mambo NY style, Cuba style and you don't have to know any Spanish. Literally your on the dance floor for hours. If you want to be a domestic passport brother than go to the Latin Clubs, at least you get the flavor before you leave the country. I prefer Latin dancing over hand-dancing because Latin Dance has more variety. Leave those silly Ratchet/Upscale BS clubs alone and check the Internet I did for Latin Salsa/Mambo clubs and ask about the price and dance lessons. Look on the RU-vid and see the number of brothers/sisters enjoying Latin Salsa/Mambo music. Most important this is so called Latin groove is a Black things created by the slaves as past time, this is where jazz went it fused with Afro-Caribbean dance beats.

Me too movement made even very well behaved men nervous to approach women. Hypergamy made "normal" guys feel apathetic about going. Social Media enables bully girls to publicly shame any guy they feel is even 3% "ick" or "ew", making a lot of guys nervous to even speak to girls. Modern young girls are, more and more, acting like weird imitations of any angry, arrogant male, which is beyond NOT sexy to 99% of guys. Gen Z is considered possibly the most overweight and bad hygiene generation yet. And the more time goes on, the less truly good music is coming out, while inflation means what used to be "$3 beer night" is now "$7 beer night". I mean... do you really need me to go on? I'm older than most of the people here. In the '80s dudes were ready to dance and have fun. Now a lot of men are too cool to dance. God forbid that men dance with each other (they do in all of Asia but not the US/Canada/UK). Groups of women go out looking great and they take a group selfie, send it to each other, and then everyone spends 20 mins silent editing that photo for their personal IG. There are a lot of interesting people your own age but club people and social clubs are not usually overlapping. You could meet a nice girl who is a volunteer at the dog rescue (caring and compassionate) who runs them (fit) and you wouldn't need to spend a dime. And you could easily have a conversation. But a lot of people won't do that because they are obsessed with social media. They are just lamenting that other people are self-obsessed, too. And you made a good point. Women are interested in getting attention online but they don't care about actually having a man in their life. A lot of them got tired of being called names like 304 😅 and that they are a 4 out of 10. Fresh and Fit narrative.

I’ll tell you as a guy who goes to clubs to specifically dance. The last time I went to the club was in Philly a month and a half ago. I’ll tell you my most recent experience. I can’t tell you how many times I get people thinking I’m arrogant and just walk away from me with a sour face because I can actually dance to the rhythm of a beat and not a wallflower. I also get danced on by women a lot because at the end of the day, it’s all about your confidence on the dance floor and women will be attracted to that, I even made out with a couple on the dance floor as well. It’s also about how attractive you are as well, this is a huge factor when it comes to women wanting to dance with you. I keep myself in shape and I have an athletic body type (think of a professional soccer player physique.) Being very attractive body wise will get you far in the club with women if you know how to dance on top of that, you need to display confidence and stand out. Like I said earlier, you will repel a lot of people who think your arrogant but I get compliments on the dance floor from both women and men. There was also a girl in the club I wanted to dance with and another dude came up to her to try to dance with her and she rejected him instantly (quite rudely) and turned back to her friends. I come up from behind her a few minutes later on a different song and she gave me a very flirtatious look and started dancing with me. Women will dance with you but you gotta basically be the life of the party and look above average, just sayin.

I think among the new generation (mine), the club scene is dying but its in exchange for self thrown parties that’s promoted like an Airbnb or loft party. I feel like the cost of everything is driving people to essentially make their own clubs out of these parties and everyone can bring their own drinks, weed, etc. to enjoy themselves. Most parties don’t even cost nothing since you’re bringing your own stuff and if they do cost, it’ll be like 15 dollars max. As for cellphones, I’m ngl, It’s a huge problem. I find myself not using it much nowadays at parties because it’s better to live in the moment than trying to capture everything. I see the issue but recently, I’ve noticed most people don’t use phones much here no more. If anything, the girls are always twerking and dancing on each other but the guys are too scared to go dance with them because of how nowadays, guys can get called out for anything and they’re instantly condemned so most guys, especially young black men, are afraid of the girls freaking out and then saying they got sexually harassed or something like that. That’s really the plight of the club scene as of now from what I see

The current phone and social media generation has made going out in public a less enjoyable experience. Some people livestream while in clubs, taking away from the experience of those around them. What was once a place to escape reality and the outside world has become overpriced and filled with unpleasant individuals. The clubbing scene has lost its charm, and only a certain type of people still go there, the ones who make it a negative experience for everyone else.

I feel you 0G. There are definitely different avenues to have fun and a lot of people are saying that salsa clubs are still Poppin, but as a black person, I want to enjoy the vibes of my culture, and those vibes are eroding. My girlfriend is Latina so I am definitely riding that wave 🌊🌊🌊💯💯💯

I went to NY nightclubs beginning in 86 and DJed professionally in Manhattan every weekend and most weeknights from 95 until COVID so I know what I’m talking about. I can tell you how it died. The first nail in the coffin was banning smoking in clubs. Before that people would stay all night until the lights came on at four. The later it got the busier it got. But after the smoking ban people would go outside for a cigarette and they might not come back in. This created a shorter rotation of customers which caused DJs to cater to immediate gratification in order to keep people inside. The music got trendier and more focused on quick mixes to appease shorter attention spans. If that wasn’t bad enough cell phones came into being also around that time. There’s a reason there aren’t any clocks or windows in clubs. It’s so you will forget about the outside world and spend money partying. Cell phones have the time and let you talk to people who aren’t there. So that illusion is destroyed. I remember whenever it was daylight savings time in the fall, the manager would always come up to me around 3am and say “ are you ok with playing an extra hour “ and people would stay until basically 5am. That never happened again after cell phones. Then came 2004 when Millennials finally became old enough to go out. That 50 cent song came out that year and all the DJs were complaining to each other that people were obsessed with that song and that they had to play it over and over. I had one friend DJ Omi, who said she would play it back to back until people stopped dancing just so she could get back to DJing. The requests for Britney Spears were endless and were always made by annoying girls who either weren’t even dancing or would take over the dance floor obnoxiously shouting the lyrics with their little girl posse. The millennials turned nightclubs into fucking Karaoke and the spineless promoters and club owners catered to this bridge and tunnel crowd because rents had become outrageous. That’s how it all ended.

God forbid your song came on and you’re in the bathroom! Everyone is hurrying up to get on the dance floor. So sad people will never find “Love in this Club” ❤❤no one is dancing because they don’t want to be recorded. Take away privacy and out goes the fun.

its not about any of that. Its about the Music. Music Videos as well. Back then hip hop and rnb was dance motivated. Music videos was in the club grinding dancing. The music culture has divided us. However, go to a Mexican club, they are still dancing. Why? Their music has not changed. They don't let record labels change their culture. Go to a Mexican spot and you'll dance. You cant dance with a girl with this new wave music. Everything else this video mentions adds more fuel to the anti dancing. But its the culture invasion taken over by the executive record labels that has changed the way you move in the clubs. If we bring back the music to things that makes us move, and then push out music video promoting the culture of dancing, it will come back. Chris Brown is the only thing we have left close to dancing. Once we lose Chris Brown, dancing will be dead.

Back in 2007, I met a woman from Miami at a club in New York. She seemed fascinated that people were DANCING with each other. Men and women. I'm like, what else is supposed to happen? Unfortunately about 3 years later I found out. Whole club environment changed, starting with the music. TBH, in NYC, standing around, overpriced VIP sections, that started with "the lounges" in Manhattan.

Agreed. Glad I was in college at this time. Golden era. It was still decent up until 2018. 2019 was workable but started going downhill. covid was the nail in the coffin. you can still have a good time in Houston but you have be at a great club on a big night with a decent artist. you can’t just walk into any club on a Saturday night and expect to have a good time anymore. it CAN be a good time but risk/ reward simply is not there. 2013-2016 a wild night was pretty much guaranteed so it would always be worth it to even pop out for even an hour. no planning required. Dallas tho> Completely different story. It’s still solid out there. Jezebels for days 😂
