I think the new Studio around 2012, was around $700 - $750. Some still even had MOP inlays in the headstocks. Wish I could've been smart enough to have hung onto the ones I had.
@@elvee7851I have a hard time spending that kinda money and get a bag as well... unless it's those "gig bags" that are basically a case with nylon cover. That's not the case with these gibsons. I'd never buy one, there's a lot of other guitars that are 2k that are without a doubt way better than what gibson makes
@@jlo7770 A lot of companies now are giving gig bags instead of hard shell cases as a cost cutting measure. I don't like the trend - for $1500+ guitars I expect a hard shell case.
@@elvee7851 same, I was unimpressed when my 1600$ Ltd showed up in a cardboard box.. I'm even more shocked strandberg is selling 3000$ guitars and putting them in a cheap weird gigbag. At that price a hard case is a must, it's an expensive piece of equipment. Honestly I wouldn't even mind having the option to pay 50-100$ extra they come in a hardcase but a lot of companies don't even do that. I 100% agree, it's companies charging more and giving less for that more money. Kinda hope people stop paying for this crap, I know I'm not buying a new gibson lol
GOOD-NESS!!!! Man, I am finding it harder and harder to defend Gibson against those that call "GREEDY". I didnt pay $2000 for my 2020 60s Standard - and it was just a few months ago that Classics were selling for $1700. This appears to be just a flat money-grab. Neck Binding on a Studio - who cares (especially when you cant see it). Mother of Pearl headstock logo on a Studio - who cares (not worth $500). Modern heel cut on a Studio - who cares. Ebony fret board on a Studio - who cares (not worth $500) - then to add insult to injury, ship them in a gig bag - Really??? On a personal level, I dont really have any complaints. I have 2 Studios so I dont care if Gibson runs the retail price on these up to $5k, mine just become worth more. But as a HUGE Gibson fan, this is incredibly disappointing that Gibson continues to move toward pricing out buyers by adding things that overall dont matter to the playing experience. Studios have always been the working musicians Les Paul - the workhorse. Now we get things that dont matter at a price point that is either unaffordable or that doesnt make financial sense to pay. Thanks for the vid Trogly - love your channel.
Working musicians aren't buying Gibson's anymore. They are pricing themselves out of the market as they have a revolving door of CEO's trying to figure out what's going wrong. Robot tuners, poor quality, designs nobody wants and pricing that is out of touch are just a few missteps.
Two weeks ago, I would have supported your comment on PRS. I love Gibson - I have 3 of them and have never had a QC issue. I also have a PRS from 2019 that is a great guitar - but - I just bought a Silver Sky SE (maple fretboard) last week and it has literally the worst fret work I have ever had on a guitar - ever. I bought post-COVID Fenders that werent as bad as this PRS. On the Dylan Talks Tone channel, he got the same Silver Sky SE and had the same issues - other than my fret issues were on all of them and I have several uneven frets. I spent almost 3 hours fixing the fret sprout and I havent even addressed the fret leveling issue. I am very disappointed.
And the people driving them would be yelling at the rest of us driving Lamborghinis, Porsches, GTRs, and Bugattis (or hell, any other modern car) at a better price saying, “yeah but my car has MOJO, and that’s why it’s better than your objectively superior car!” 😂 this company has almost went out of business several times, but these boomers keep it on life support. Slash is my favorite guitarist, but I wish he would’ve played ANYTHING else so Gibson could’ve been gone. I’ll never understand how people will pay more money for an antiquated piece of technology. Like imagine paying 5 grand for a VCR. That’s what paying for a Les Paul is like.
So: less quality finish, still no locking tuners, still no proper axcess heel joint, still no stainless steel, but $500 more than before, and the old Studio was simply discontinued so you can't buy it no more. $2000 is a lot of money, ando you can buy much more quality guitars, you can even buy a used proper Les paul MODERN, which retailed for $3.5k and is a waaaay better deal. Gibson keeps losing buyers, real player buyers.
i just bought the purple one, the ebony fretboard and mother of pearl logo was enough for me to upgrade from the old studios, oh and the purple finish is EXQUISITE. the binding on neck is pretty dope too. black chrome hardware is a definite plus. so, coming from a studio player, this thing rocks
Inflation lol! There is no justification for such bs…. A 93 studio is basically a custom without all the bells and whistles. Now the DO give you LESS Coz they want to give you less and charge more
I feel like this has more features than my 2021 studio .... bound ebony fretboard. Gibson inlay on headstock vs screen print. Bypass to bridge. Access heel and belly carve. The cooler keystone style grover tuners... I'm kinda jelly 😅
Surprised Trogley took it so easy on Gibson here. I mean, I know he's a fan boy and doesn't want to rock the boat but.....high quality satin??? binding and a logo makes $2k seem more sensible? Come on Trog, just say that its not enough to justify $2k period.
All it is missing is a little more buffing time and binding on the body from being a “standard.” People are being too hard on these. These will be sleeper classics in the future on the used market. Try one - you’ll like it. There are many different kinds of satin finishes
I aso think people don't take American manufacturing cost into consideration. American workers can't compete with Chinese wages and shouldn't have too. Also more hand labor with Gibson s@@Trog
@@Trog A gloss finish and body binding are the most expensive labor intensive costs for Gibson. Not having either saves them a lot of money. A Classic is only $200 more and has a gloss finish, body and neck binding and a hardshell case.
@@Trog People like yourself need to be calling out Gibson on this BS, as do us consumers. I dont know a single person that wants all the electronics i a Les Paul! A garbage finish and a gig bag.
I agree. The industry has managed to convince consumers that it's a benefit and something they should want, while in reality it costs them a lot less to manufacture. People claim they don't like stickiness of gloss but satin can also get sticky in humidity and over time starts to buff from handling it. You end up with finish blotches all over the body surface and back of the neck, not to mention a minor ding can easily chip off wood. Of course, some troll will respond now and claim their satin guitar is the best thing ever and "breathes" and still looks pristine but they probably spend more time looking at it on a guitar stand in their bedroom than gigging with it. Then again, there are a lot of posers out there who like fake relics.
Studio Modern is $2700CAD in Canada! Fretboard binding but no annoying nibs, yay! But then short tenon with that deep access heel carve seems like a bad idea. Making the working player's Studio guitar such a light satin nitro seems like a big loss too. A light satin nitro can chip away fairly fast under use and it's depressing to watch that, especially if it's pretty finish that contrasts to bare wood. Now Gibson dropped the Tribute line, in Canada the cheapest new Gibson LP is the Modern Lite at $2000CAD. I love Gibson but I'm pushed out of that new guitar market now.
Ehh, I’ll stick with the epi lp modern, yes it’s missing the straight to bridge knob, but it’s over half the price less, and gloss finish (I have the flame top in burbon burst… I didn’t like the fade finishes at all)
Yeah, I have a Gibson Les Paul just to have one. It sounds amazing, but is my most uncomfortable guitar to play. I play it once every couple of months, then it goes back in the case till the next time I get a Les Paul itch.
I love my 2016 radiant red studio. 2023 Studios were 1400 euros just a few months ago, these are 2200 euros, a standard is around 2700 new. WTF Gibson? Also, and just a f*n gig bag? My 2016 came with a beautiful case for 1300. I love Gibsons but this is out of control
No way! I’ve owned a number of Studios and I still own one today. I’ve also owned Standards and Cusons, a 68 black beauty Custom two pup model that I sold many years ago before they became crazy expensive. But for $2k there are a bunch of nice used higher level LP’s including a hsc.
A more subdued poker chip would make it better as would a black screw on the pickguard. That chrome one really stands out. Great review but I'll keep my 2018 Tribute model.
I'll agree it is a difference but does it make it better though? I have a handful of Gibsons including a vintage K'zoo one and honestly the mahogany neck although looks beautiful is the biggest thing that causes problems Imo whether it be headstock breaks, tuning stability and neck ramp issues. The maple neck on the Tribute is sort of a blessing in disguise for reliability and if anything makes it better especially for a player's guitar.@@bernddoolmann5597
Way overpriced. You can get a much nicer brand new Traditional Pro for around $2k during most holiday sales with a hard shell case and more unique pickups.
I have a 1990 black/gold studio exactly like the one in the video. Hated the 490R/498T set in it, replaced it With Seymour Duncan A2Pros a long time ago and love the way it sounds now. That pickup set always has a muddy neck sound and a snotty bridge tone. No idea why Gibson uses it standard on so many guitars when they have a dozen other better options.
Grabbed my 91 Studio for just under 1100 shipped and taxed during the height of Covid. While I like the look and idea of these new ones, 2k is absolutely batshit.
The ebony board is a big plus. Cool to see they put on a decent logo. But for that money.. My 2013 Tribute with mahogany neck was a steal. Happier by the year. 810 USD inflation calculated to 2024. Not going to bother with new Gibsons anymore.
Even with the little upgrades it seems like it cost a bit much for what is essentially an entry level LP model. Plenty of used Studio's on the market for fantastic prices that I would jump on before going with one of these. Saw a really clean used studio in a local shop a few months ago for 900 hundred that had a top that looked like it belonged on a Standard. Also seems like if your set on new it would be better to spend two hundred more on a LP Classic as there are still plenty around.
@@jamesmarkham7489 Yeah, that was baaaaad, a bit of microphonic feedback is typical for vintage era correct pickups that are unpotted, but what they use in the modern series really should be potted by default
They made a nice improvement, price raze is stupid. Like, for 2k you can get a lot of guitar. AZ Prestige series from Ibanez, American Player from Fender, Strandbers, Some high end improts or USA Jackson from Virtuoso line. No Stainless steel frets, Les Pauls never were the most playable guitars and they aren't now. Like, I really like Gibson, but I don't think I'll ever buy one
This price is pretty insulting honestly. A top of the line Fender American Vintage II Stratocaster is just a couple hundred dollars more than one of these, and if you don't want vintage specs then the modern guitars are hundreds of dollars CHEAPER than this.
There's so much more variety these days, even Gibson's own brand Epiphone has a lot of selection, there's so much competition, especially from far eastern manufacturing getting better and better, I just sold a Gibson Les Paul Studio in January I don't even miss it!
I'd go even further by adding that even if they only looked at the Gibson brand they'd see there are better options than a $2k satin studio. A regular LP Studio is $300 less, a Modern Lite LP is $500 less, an LP Special is $200 less, An LP Classic is only $200 more and includes a case, an SG Standard is $200 less, the SG '61 is the same price with a case. And like you said, there are a ton of options outside of Gibson.
Had to chuckle at the neck binding that you can't even see. Also, thanks for putting that bald guy with a beard in my head. Can't unsee it now. Nothing wrong with that look, but thanks lol 🤣
2k for a studio with a cheap finish . This is a 600 guitar. Was looking for a new custom I was shocked 5799? I was figuring 3500 tops crazy. Amazing they can still sell smarten up people.
It's cool, but I feel like the prices are out of control. In my world, finding a twenty year old Studio for $900 and taking it to my favorite local luthier for a setup means I can have an incredible Les Paul and still afford lunch. Nice video though.
I really dig these but I can’t understand why they bothered with black binding on the ebony board without fret nibs…at that point the binding can barely be seen or felt. I’d rather it be unbound and slightly cheaper. Also satin finish might feel nice but makes it look cheap. At $1800 I’d be more excited but $2K seems excessive. I might still buy one but not in a rush. I was fortunate to find a 1990 Alpine white studio that I adore. I’d get the modern to pair with it but it could never replace my 1990.
I'm glad I got my Tribute when I did. Either way, none of these newer models are available in lefty, so it seems Gibson doesn't want me as a customer anyway. Moving on. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm a devout Gibson man and have spent thousands upon thousands on their guitars and wide beveled custom made pickguards and truss rod covers. Other than on my woman and kids, I've spent more money on Gibsons than anything else I can think of. Yes, I dress my ladies up, however, I wish Gibson would put volutes on their guitars...would be similar to elegant French garters on a luxurious pair of French pantyhose. They make the neck look more attractive and makes it more playable as well as reinforces it, while the extra wood makes the guitar more resonant - and it doesn't get in the way of the player's hands...not to mention the millions of dollars it would save Gibson players in repair money, anxiety, frustration and downright agony. Were it not for the weak neck joint, we wouldn't have to baby them out of fear of headstock breaks. If Gibson were to install them on their guitars TODAY, believe me, they'd put everybody else out of business - even with their overpricing, greed and pathetic QC problems.🙂 Not putting down the guitar of my life - just stating something that would make it an even better guitar. But make no mistake, even with its QC problems it's still the undisputed king of electric guitars and it don't look like things will ever be otherwise.
People paying this stupid money for a Gibson get what they deserve. A poor QA poorly assembled guitar. With a name. $2000... man some people just don't think.
I got one a month ago for a great price new. in wine red. the routes, not clean at all. surprisingly messy in the rear. and it had a bad phoenix connector, causing hum. all in all, lovely players guitar.
I actually laughed out loud when I heard they were $2k. For a Studio? That's hilarious. Whoever is in charge of Gibson pricing these days is absolutely tripping.
I would love to learn more about the 07-08 vintage mahogany Les Paul studios I’ve got one and is an amazing instrument! I’ve read at a forum that those models where using bodies from customs but I can’t be assure of it!
What they are likely referring to is they are built “like” a 1957 reissue. They will still be slightly thinner though as is the nature of a studio. Great guitars!
10:46 - Gibson should always provide a blank truss rod cover, as this has been tradition for a while now. Even though this is a “Studio” and cheaper, for the amount of money Gibson’s are asking for, why chince their customers?
Re:Gibson finishing quality - bought an SG custom from new, the finishing was rough, very rough, especially up by the nut, appalling considering the price. Compared to a US Pro Strat finishing, it was third world and the SG was far more expensive. Just an FYI.
...to make the price "viable"? Dude, c'mon...that's kind of insulting, lol. There is NOTHING on this guitar that screams $2000, there is nothing that screams $1499. The binding is chopped right t.f. up it seems. They screwed the studios imo. Not a fan of these. The finish looks bad, like really bad. The studios from the 90s were workhorses that had.....class is the word that comes to mind. This is just...nope. Edit: $2000 and you dont even get the multi tool.
2k is really a lot compared to what an LTD 1000 series offers you for 500 less... Overall a great guitar, unnecessary neck binding but at least we finally get a compound radius fingerboard on a studio
I guess they really do need to keep the price of the cheapest Gibsons higher than the highest priced Ephiphones. The only thing the Studios had going for them was the price. You can get a used Standard way cheaper than a new Studio and cheaper than the fanciest Ephiphone, now. That just seems crazy to me. Times are definitely changing.
Instead of “Studio” on the truss rod cover, they should replace “model” with “studio” on the headstock silkscreen. Like they did on the classics for a while.
I would have bought the white one if it were at a normal studio price. You can get a used standard in pretty much perfect quality for 2200-2500. The ebony boards are nice looking though. Just not worth the price at all.
I bought my Gibson Studios brand new in the 1990's when they were $699.99. Basically I got 2 for less than the price of one with these new absolutely CRAZY prices on them. I also bought a 100 watt Marshall Super Triple lead combo amp for $750.00 new.
I have NEVER seen the "worn white" in a Les Paul Studio. I only knew one player that had one. He bought it around (the year) 2003, and he was hell bent on a Les Paul. So, his woodgrain red finish model was obviously a "consolation prize." It stayed in tune really well, but that's all the "good" I have to say about it.
The satin finish makes me think that this one is a Tribute with some cosmetic upgrade. I think Gibson should at least give at least a gloss finish for the top, and leave the back and neck satin
I think its ridiculous that people will pay that kind of money for an entry level Gibson that has faulty wiring or a bad pickup. The same brand snobs will turn their noses up at a $1499 Epiphone that comes with a $200 Gator TSA chainsaw case. The new '79 LP custom silverburst AJ sig. from Epiphone is packed with high end features, like the Gibson Custombucker neck pickup that retails for $279. If having your favorite brand on the headstock is important, buy a cobbled together weird looking Gibson. If you want the absolute highest spec'd and utterly gorgeous guitar Epiphone has ever produced, get on that preorder list. Because they aren't going to be "in stock" for at least 3-4 months minimum.
what I don't understand is the heel.. my Epiphone studio got carved way beyond even what ESP does with an eclipse and 4 years on it's still garbage but the neck is stable.... I been poor it's my fault being non-essential IYKWIM but I long ago carved the heel and body to do the thing right and yeah there was some gaps in there. It's all good now and there's a stinger but the TRUOIL finish and black marker after CA stabilizing,. my "garbage ugly burst studio" is a Gibson killer.. full shred neck series parallel. Pearly Gates Bridge.. same pot as the neck A500k DPDT to a switch in the bridge tone pot spot and TBX tone pot common with the Buckethead Killswitch. ugly burst is an Oxblood over Maple.. .but should be over a goldtop ebony would be nice. but I prefer SG
