Thank you my brother. The clarity and patients you've master is more than helpful to me. The biggest gift I think you process is patients. Not knocking those that offer this teaching but they could learn alot from a brother such as yourself. Ya'll thank this dude. I appreciate it. sorry so long. Peace
Nice video, thanks for addressing this subject. The modes can sound confusing at first, but keep in mind, 7 modes, but still only the same 7 of the major scale. I was lucky because I was taught to think modal from day 1 thanks to the crazy music teacher I had. This example might help make it clearer. This is how I approach the modes. Use C Ionian over Cmaj7, D Dorian over Dm7, E Phrygian over Em7, F Lydian over Fmaj7, G Mixolydian over G7, A Aeolian over Am7, and B Locrian Bm7b5.
Really helpful, thanks for this. I am transitioning from 40 years of classical violin to bass guitar and having to unlearn adapt.a huge challenge I have is understanding the reasons for changing position. With the fiddle you change position mainly to change tone and also to reach the upper registers. Position changes are linear and confirm to hand shapes that take years to perfect. Moving to a fretted instrument I’ve really struggled with positions and you’ve just helped hugely by saying that you do it to make it easier. Brilliant! I’ve been over complicating. Cheers Daric, really appreciated, I’m gonna check out more of your lessons.
Hi Daric, I always found confusing learning modes progressively moving up in the scale like you are showing (C ionian, D dorian, E phrygian etc...). What worked for me, to really understand and beginning to use major scale modes, was to play them all starting from the same note, major modes first, then all the minor ones, for example: I play C ionian, then play C lydian, then C mixolydian, then move to minor mode starting from C dorian, then C Aeolian, then C phrygian, and finally C locrian, then proceed by playing all these modes in opposite order from locrian to ionian, always starting from C. That way I really hear and internalise all the different sounds and feel of each mode. It's was a bit harder to learn them this way but it definitely paid back. Not saying your way is right or wrong, just sharing what worked for me. Thanks for your videos, I like your teaching style.
Understood completely, I’ve definitely suggested that method to some of my students. Great way to internalize each mode in relation to the root note. 👍🏾
My man. Nuff respectz for lesson. Literally picked up bass two weeks ago. Picking those modes. Cheers for the informative vid. Good reminder mistakes make you stronger!! Blessings
Hey daric ! I'm a intermediate gospel bassist . Could you show me simple fill ins I can add in church songs instead of just playing the main notes ? I want to spice up my bass playing.
Love your tutorials Daric. Amazing lessons. I think that you've mentioned that you remember by these scales by shapes. Can you explain what you meant by that? I'm a visual learner too and was wondering if you have particular shape or picture that you keep in mind. Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi Daric, I love what you are doing. Can you please show some examples in context using fills based on modes to navigate chord changes. For instances, in a a 2-5-1 groove, can you show how to create 7 different fills with the 7 modes (played not linearly)? Best regards
Never understood modes until I watched this video. I'm not joking. It's just a lot easier to understand in a bass players perspective rather than on keyboard
I'm still trying to find a video in which the first scale is done slow enough to learn without feeling overwhelmed... ya, I know, I'm also learning basic music at the same time. So what folks with foreknowledge think of as basic, us beginners are still learning.... yes, the bass is the first instrument I've actually started lessons on. Everything else I've dink with by ear.
I am really trying here, but this is what I just heard. A scale is an Ionian, an Ionian is a mode and a Mode is a scale. Needless to say, I'm frustrated right now. IS a mode a WAY to play a scale or is it different from a scale? Is a mode always a scale? Last question. Is a mode just a scale that was started past the first note like 2nd,3rd or 4th?
my question is when you're using the modes to create licks or runs particularly on a minor chord sometimes the Dorian mode works and sometimes the Aeolian mode works and wanna know how can tell which one to us?
+Fidell Henderson depends on the riff and what the chord is. If it’s a (6) chord then of course aeolian will work. If it’s the (2) chord then the Dorian will work.
Brother you are an amazing player and a great teacher... but please slow down just a little bit... you rush through and speak so fast it is difficult to understand what you're explaining! Blessings to you!
