Fleeing a city in danger, Amedeo Modigliani left his Paris studio for the relative safety of the South of France. Once there, Modigliani turned from sculpture to paint anonymous sitters, executing a number of portraits of peasants, servants, shop girls and children of the Midi. In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s Vice Chairman Simon Shaw explores Jeune Homme Assis, a mature masterwork completed during Modigliani’s time in the French Riviera. A palette of soft, earthy colors confers a feeling of tranquility, while the almond-shaped, blank eyes of the sitter - Modigliani’s trademark feature - convey an ineffable sense of melancholy. Jeune Homme Assis, Les Mains Croisées sur Les Genoux, which has remained in the same family collection since 1927, will be offered as a highlight of Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale. When viewing the artworks of Amedeo Modigliani, the most impressive point to me is the depth of the expression, to the heart.

He has such a clean, soft way of putting his paint on the canvas. Love his style, his softness.

When I think of the school of Paris, I think about Modigliani, a prince of the bohemians, with film star looks and natural genius.

It's exciting to rediscover paintings such as these. Some of the greatest works of art remain hidden away for the few to see. Art is meant to be enjoyed by all not the selfish wealthy few only. It has a historical value that documents human history. I get it that art is a commodity to some, buying and selling them for a profit. At least this painting has been seen again.

I always loved Modigliani although I did find his paintings two dimensional in a way ,, THEN I visited the Barnes Foundation exibition in Paris and stood in front of his work and my god! what an experience !! so deep and layered and vibrant. At this point all I had had to go on were flat illustrations in books. His work HAS to be seen to be appreciated.

Love the abbreviated portraits of Modigliani . Sometimes distorted and almost flatness portraits of Modigliani with a great proportions between mass and negative space ( fore and background ) : He was UNIQUE in his distinguished style . I remember when I was 7 yo , my first very successful drawing I did that I drew Nefertiti with a long neck , It was non calculated proportion but I felt it a beauty like that and I still feeling that long neck is well related to a beauty value somehow , I don't really exactly how come ? .... Thank you for this beautiful Icon

Modigliani's portraits are aesthetically/emotionally deeply grounded in me. To manifest that he was inspired by African art is a false, in my opinion. He was in a circle of a "bigger and louder than life" Picasso. However, his unique take on the trend is Brilliant in many respects, in my opinion. Thank you for the video and I'm looking for future episodes.

I hope Sotheby's has substantial scientific proof of this piece...and a rock solid provenance in their possession prior to any attempts to auction the painting.....??? Modigliani is one of the easiest artists to copy stylistically.....
@tradcatholic

Paintings are like signatures. No hand can replicate the style of another if you've studied an artists work and style. Forensics are always in play with authenticating high value works of art

@@tradcatholic I will put your comments down to not doing your homework......The art world is heaving with forgeries and institutions like Sotheby's, Christie's and others use the magic word "attributed" instead of checking. Some forgers are so good in fact, they go on to star in their own art TV shows.... Believe me, I can easily paint a convincing copy of Modigliani but, so can virtually any child or full time professional artist like me....now add the Chinese professional forgers and your statement falls on its face.... Do some homework.....before sounding off....you'll seem less the fool.....

hahaha, you gotta be jocking. It's just as if an artist's paintings hit the jackpot. This is all about the creation of wealth out of nothing just like the money printing press. The same bankster crooks who used usury lending on decent people for centuries, now play their tricks with average art.

Modi-GLI-any, not Modiliani !! Please respect the pronunciation of his name!!! I consider Modigliani as one of the greatest artists of all times.
@writerforlifeify
@writerforlifeify 3 года назад
In Italian, as you can easily verify for yourself, the 'G' that precedes 'LI' is SILENT. Hence, 'Modiliani' IS the correct pronunciation of Amadeo's (Italian) surname. Likewise, the Italian word for 'family' is 'famiglia' & is pronounced 'familia'. Another example: the Tattaglia family in The Godfather; pronounced Tattalia. The Italian name 'Emiglio' is pronounced 'Emilio' & often spelled without the 'g' outside of Italy, for obvious reasons. I googled 'how to say Modigliani in Italian' --the 'g' is NOT spoken! Please clean your ignorance-stained Win Dows before you post.

paintings which are 'lost' for a long time and suddenly 'reappear' are often forgeries. i hope this one is and some idiot pay a million dollars for it.
@Lilmisscostumedrama

Bob Best but this one wasn’t “lost”. It was held in a private collection. Most likely someone who comes from a wealthy family may have found it during clearing out the death of a family member, recongnised the work and it’s financial worth and decided to cash in.

In regards to value, you are of course absolutely wrong. As with anything, this artworks value is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it and therefore it is indeed worth that money. And commenting of a flat background in Modigliani's work, while certainly an opinion you're entitled to make as we're all entitled to opinions, it makes me wondering if you've ever seen the Masters work before.
