FYI the elderly gentleman in the crowd who was emotional was Peter Higgs, the physicist who predicted the existence of the particle in the 1960s.

Two hundred years ago, people experimented with electiricy. How the hell was this supposed to help people to stop starving? They didn't have an answer. Of course, today, electricity is used to power farming equipment for mass production and refrigeration for food preservation. My point is that we don't know how this new particle will be helpful to fighting hunger, or whatever. But knowing more opens up more possibilities than knowing less.

Even if God does not exist, the CERN scientists still did not 'create' the Higgs-Boson. It still was always there. And if God did not create it, then it was simply created by itself. I dont see how stating that God created the Higgs makes its discovery any less significant.

Just to clarify with people this is not the 'god' particle. It is a miss quote of a physicist that said something along the lines of it being so 'god dam' hard to find. The media then decided to spin it as the god particle. For those of you wondering what the 5 sigma represents it represents the certainty that they have found it. It basically means that the change of this being a fluke reading is 1 in 5 million.

LHC is kind of disappointment so far. They sold higgs well to general public but higgs was chased for couple of years in fermilab, it was spoted they just didnt get to five sigma but indicated the mass interval pretty closely and shut down the collider because it was economically useless given LHC was opened, LHC "just" finished the job. Since then nothing significant. No sign of supersymmetry particles or something else.

We live in different times nowadays, we could be less selfish and more aware of other important things. In my opinion the development of civilisation should not be only technical. I can give you an example: European and US governments gave Africans the possibility to have really cheap mobile phones because they thought it would trigger some civilisation development out there, now they are dissapointed because the idea didn't give relevant results (money wasted). That is only my opinion.

Since I studied physics i can guess what these major implications would be: 1. the mass origin explanation, 2. the Standard Model experimental validation, 3. the Electroweak Force explanation, 4. something to do with Supersymmetry and the Dark Matter, 5. Finding a slug is nothing compare to finding particle that is the fabric of the universe. Imagine if you run a universe, you have to fix it everytime your creation gone wrong Either you have to be unconcious - a machine yourself, or you create a machine that run itself, that's when your existence become useless God's purpose of existence is so meaningless he might as well doesnt exist. so i think of God as he is: either an unconcious machine, or uselessly nonexistence - a concept.
@13thMarverick
@13thMarverick 12 лет назад
a wrong point in your statement: Why must there be a god ? Why must he create all thing ? Why isnt all thing just there to begin with ? This universe is already complex, so whoever make this must be even more complex, that mean there's even a more complex being create that complex being that create this universe. It go on forever. If god is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent then his existence is not needed. If god create the universe that run itself then his existence is meaningless.

Sorry, but I don't understand two things: 1st: What has science to do with religion? Really. Science is facts. Therefore you must accept science, provided that you are not insane or delusional. Then, you may or may not, as a matter of opinion, choice and philosophical stance, be religious or not. 2nd: Christianity has no proofs. The point of all religion is believing when proof is against it. Simple as that.

well it's quite simple.. any religion is based on faith.. faith that what they tell you is the truth.. It's the same thing with science, it's it? People , why even care to define God? People used to define god as an all ruling king ,some define god as a holy spirit. Today even scientists try to define god in a fundamental particle. Why? Isnt everything : the biggest and even the smallest part of a grand design? Seek for Knowlege but dont expect to fully define the universe, because : it is in some ways unexplanable why it excist and why we have manifest ourselfves into excistance.

well yeah I mean fundamentalists (I'm not a native speaker,sorry), but I think fundamentalists is a pretty accurate depiction of these people,since they believe to know that their way of thinking is the only truths and arrogantly make fun of any other believes, although they are just as unknowing as anyone else. Of course not every atheist is so nutty, as not any religious dude is crazy (as often proclaimed by these fundamentalist atheists.) There's a reason it's called faith and not fact.

It is in fact nicknamed the god particle because a book by the physicist Leon Lederman was titled "The Goddamned Particle" due to his frustrations when trying to prove the Higgs Boson. am i the only 1 who can see that the math is not right ? the h.b. should weigh in at 112-115 GeV according to the standard model . 125GeV . SD+-5 .IT CAN'T BE THE H.B. O spin says it must be" a" boson .who knows what ? I think we may have discovered something very mysterious .. dark matter maybe?

Perhaps it appears that way to you, because many of these people might just have some scientific acumen or qualification and feel secure enough in themselves that they don't have to announce to the world on RU-vid or Facebook that they are a Physics Major? Dunno...just saying.

money is not to be wasted on charities i agree, it is like giving them a "fish", but what they need is a "rod" to catch the "fish", so why not educate people but more generally, knowing about these particles will not cure this world either

I'm worried about all of us,not just for me,i love science but i guess it's kinda weird that they came up with this after lots of people were saying that it was a waste of money that LHC.Maybe they didn't find anything and they said that to calm the media.

The particle was originally named "God Damned" Particle because it was so hard to find. An editor to the paper didn't like the word "Damned" and so shortened it to just "God". This particle has absolutely nothing to do with whether God exists or not.

Here is the way I described it. It's not that they observed the actual particle. What they observed is the expected results of it's existence. Kind of like the regular pattern of welts one would expect if you were smacked in the face with a waffle iron.

Anyone seen that bs "we're all HAPPY at cern" video? It's on YT! The Mandela effect is mentioned in it as a sort of "tongue in cheek" joke! Personally i dnt find it at all HAPPY let alone funny that most likely cern has put us all into an alternate timeline reality of which I'm not particularly "HAPPY" about if I'm honest!

the question is: Where did this particle come from???!!!!!! I mean who made it? we are used to, according to scientific rules, that everything made has something or someone make it...so where does this boson come from?

That's what I love about science. If 1 man in that room stood up with proof that they were wrong, everyone would concede, in amazement i might add. While In religion when that 1 man stands up, he is persecuted & cast out.

Peter Higgs getting emotional was beautiful. Of course in the United States we built a full-size replica of Noah's Ark, so I think we're ahead.

I like how atheists have a sense of entitlement to science, like a spoiled child not wanting to share it's shiny red ball that a school teacher gave the class for recess.

0:30 wait what.... only a scientist can make it so anticlimactic... In the future they will create movies about it and they will make it SO DRAMATIC.... LOL...
