I have lived in Ontario for 67 years and have never seen a storm such as this. I was at the family cottage one hour and a half west of Ottawa. The storm blew through in ten minutes causing severe damage with mature white pine trees, building damage, hydro poles and lines, etc. I called home after it had passed giving warning to my family. The storm reached Ottawa within an hour causing similar destruction. I never want to witness such a storm again. It was a miracle that we didn’t lose many more lives!

That really captures how dark it got. I have never seen a storm this dark as this one. Thanks for taking the video. Its a good recap for posterity.

Yeah, I experienced a derecha storm yesterday and it got as dark or even darker than this. It was insane. We could barely see outside. It also got so green. But still this video is good.

It didn't get as dark as what you saw, the upload is just crap. It happened at 430pm.

The storm came through at like 4pm too, was crazy how fast it went from sunny day to hurricane level storms

I was getting off the bus at 3:25 pm, home 5 minutes later, saw it getting dark, performed a backup. I had my umbrella with me for what I thought was a regular thunderstorm in the forecast 🤪

Fortunately I was planning to visit home (on Wednesday). When I left we were on day 5 without power. I think my neighbourhood is into day 7 now according to emails from the ward 😲 How did things turn out in Peterborough?

ive seen a few of these videos circling around and what while the wind and rain were severe, nothing I havent seen before, what gets me with all of them is how quickly and severely it got pitch black out. Grew up in the midwest and went through countless microbursts and tornadoes, and now live on the coast and have ridden out more than a hand full of hurricanes. But I have never, ever seen it get that dark out before. It seemed like a black hole, almost light absorbing. Just insane.
@JarrettWalksOttawa

Absolutely! Might have been a shade darker than it should have been in the video, but I adjusted it about 20 seconds in.

It got dark like this in Brampton too, it literally looked like _night time_ ,and we were all in awe of this storm at work. I’m surprised with the wind blowing _that_ strong, our curbside sign didn’t fly away like many of the traffic lights 🚦 that broke off their posts. Our ventilation system was rattling so much from how fast and strong those winds were. I’m also shocked that our power actually held up at work. People who think that this looks like an average summer thunderstorm, no way. Nuh uh. This was way worse, this stretched across a whole Southern Ontario and parts of Southern Quebec.

@@JarrettWalksOttawa yep, it did and truth be told, I was actually scared, even though I was inside. I even pointed out the abnormal color of the sky to my coworkers because a lot them didn’t understand what was happening. (At the time I didn’t know about Derechos 😅) There is still a lot of damage from the aftermath (despite it being two weeks ago). The storm was both fascinating and scary at the same time.

With 130km winds sustained for several minutes. It was no thunderstorm, it was a derecho, and a big one.

@@alanmacification 65mph (104km) 70mph (112km) sustained. 81mph (130km) 93mph (149km) gusts. Still impressive, but for some areas it's not that rare. Especially in the US plains, which could be where Leviathan is from.

That's some _SERIOUS_ wind and rain. Was there any actual tornado in that storm, or just non-tornado winds? I'm in Edmonton.... we had storm here the other day, but nothing like yours... It rolled in with guests of wind that blew and sucked my living room curtains (my window was open), the heavy curtain hit the screen and popped it out frame and all. I guess it was loose. But it was just that brief blast of wind, a couple of flashes and rumbles and a shower, and gone in five minutes. This video just popped up in my feed... probably because I've been watching storm chasing vids lately. But I might check out more of them... I like cats, and storms.
@JarrettWalksOttawa

Nope, no reports of tornado. I think that's just what everyone rushes to call it. Awesome, thanks Linda! Jujube is my neighbour's wonderful cat who I've known for 4 years.

Oh city people! I live in the country and get hit with storms like this often. No one gives a shit cause we are farmers and country people get forgotten. Got a storm like this last summer, power was out for almost a week. We don’t have city water and our well pump needs power so had to use my gas generator to work our water well pump. Nice storm by the way!

The thing is we don't normally get storms like this either. 30 minutes before it hit my phone kept ringing with alerts warning to take cover. I was at work and everyone's phone just kept alarming. I got literally 17 alerts leading up to the storm. We all thought they were being dramatic for a little storm and then it came.
