This is a bit of a David and Goliath story. Not because the Houston Astros were bigger and stronger than the Washington Nationals, but because the Nationals were so bad at the start of the 2019 season (19-31 in May) you could equate their chances of success to those of a child fighting a giant. And you could equate the Astros' chances of success to the giant because they won 100+ games three seasons in a row. And a championship in 2017.
By all accounts, the Nationals were not supposed to be in the World Series and the Astros absolutely were. But here we are in game 7. David was giving Goliath a run for his money. Or whatever they used back then. Lambs?
Goliath was a Megazoid made up of 7 all-stars including a trio of aces Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, and the newly acquired Zack Greinke.
How’d they do it? Well, they used an injured Max Scherzer, a doubted Stephen Strasburg, a… actually, there’s no negative adjective for Juan Soto he was pretty loved so we’ll just say… a young Juan Soto and a 34-year-old veteran a little over a year removed from an Achilles rupture combined to form a sort of Megazoid of their own. A team, I guess is what I’m trying to describe.
To fully understand how the Nats took down the Astros, how the weak took down the mighty, how the underdog took down the overdog, and how the child took down the giant, we have to rewind.

For years I was a nervous wreck whenever the Nats played in the postseason. The game 5 loss in 2012 was so devastating, and the years of alternating regular-season and postseason futility made it worse. But something eased a bit when Soto hit the line drive single off Hader in the wild card, and turned to relief when Kendrick hit the grand slam in the NLDS game 5. Honestly, I felt almost serene during the World Series that year. I'd just seen them keep fighting and come back so many times that season, that I KNEW we were going to win the second Greinke walked Soto, even before he was pulled.

The best part about this story is that nobody lost. Washington got rid of Dusty Baker, then he went to Houston and made a couple of world series-winning one. Bryce Harper went to Philadelphia and became a freaking legend. He helped drag that seemed to a world series they had no business being in. Max scherzer was on the team and he won the world series that year, validating his contract.

There is no situation where Greinke stays in and the Astros win that game. He was missing the zone the entire inning and walked the go ahead run to the plate. He was done. The call was a decision between Gerrit Cole, the best starter in baseball who has only pitched out of the bullpen once in his career, and Will Harris, the Astros best reliever and an allstar in his own right. Hinch made the right call. Harris threw as perfect a cutter you could location wise and Kendrick just managed to hit it and keep it fair. It’s a tip your cap and move on moment. There is no what-if in this scenario that doesn’t have predictable poor results or a complete unknown that nobody can predict.

Unforgettable October as a Nats fan... We needed SO MANY moments like these to stay alive. Juan Soto in the Wild Card, Stephen Strasburg and Howie Kendrick in the NLDS, and Howie Kendrick again in the WS, among so many other timely performances and clutch moments. Everything had to be perfect for the Nats to pull it off that season, and somehow all of the stars aligned. It's like we saved up all of our luck as a fanbase (and seemingly borrowed some luck from the future) to make that one month of baseball possible, and most of us will say it was totally worth it.

I have been begging for this moment. YESSS!!! And this dagger shot means a lot to me as a former Halo fan with his making the last shot as the core we had in 2009. Napoli, Kendrick, Guerrero and Hunter was such a fun time and I always loved Kendrick so as Arte became Dan Snyder, I fell in love with the Nationals in 2011. I remember the joy and pain of it all and for Kendrick, the last piece of that core to get the ring was immensely needed closure to the former Angels side of me. Those late-00s Angels team were so good, it's crazy that they didn't go further. Whenever I watched them they seemed like an All Star team beating up on AAA teams. They just felt like the best team of that era, even though they never came close to winning it all. The 2007/8 playoff exits especially were baffling to watch.

@@jawbone78 yep. I have very fond memories of the 09 team the most with how we were a wagon. That was our chance and we could do it. Freaking A-Rod… That’s why the 2019 team is one I will always cherish so much as Kendrick gave my newfound team the edge over the Astros Wagon which felt like they were a spiritual successor to our 09 team but in the last Hurrah of our window (2012-2021).

@@qshot9848 I was a Nats fan from birth, when they were the Expos, so I definitely appreciated the culmination of the long road in 2019. The mid-2010s Nats were actually a lot like the late-00s Angels, in that every single year they seemed like the obvious best team on paper, and you'd look at who they were running out there every day thinking, "who could possibly be better than this absolute embarrassment of riches?" only to watch them exit in the first round. 2019 was so cathartic.

@@jawbone78 Yeah. That NLCS Sweep was so damn cathartic especially from 2012 where as a kid, I learned sports heartbreak in real time from that double. Watching Eaton rip the souls of Cardinals Fans in half with that swing was euphoric combined with Kendrick cutting them down in game 3.

So many little things and the chemistry this team had in the clubhouse and with the fans - after all, this was the year of the baby shark... Winning that Wild Card game propelled us into the playoffs, besting some formidable matchups, ultimately marching right into the epic that was this historic 7-game WS. No home team ever won a game! This is fantastic to re-live. Just want to point out that overall, Nats fans not only were ok with the Stras shutdown in the long-run, time has proven Rizzo correct. Stras signed his first extension with the Nats precisely because Rizzo protected him, and when he was healthy, he was among the best. He is one of the greatest postseason pitchers of all time (look it up). I am grateful that the Nats treated him well, and I'm only sad that his career ended so soon - but at least he brought the city a title, and flags fly forever.

Also, I HATE it when people frame the shutdown as "protecting Strasburg's arm for future postseason runs", because Rizzo was adamant from the beginning that he was doing it to protect Strasburg the person, not Strasburg the baseball asset. Rizzo believed (rightly or wrongly) that Strasburg's injury risk was too great to continue pitching that season, and he was willing to protect his player at the risk of losing baseball games. You can agree or disagree with his rationale, but the fact of the matter is he made a difficult decision to do what he thought was right and stuck to it despite the insane screaching of the rest of the baseball world.

Not only was this a great world series (all wins by both teams were road wins) but it was a great postseason with plenty of drama. Washington beating Milwaukee in the WC game was epic and then upsetting the Dodgers in the NLCS.

Watching this from Dacha Beer Garden across the street from Nats Park, I can attest that the place absolutely exploded. Just bedlam. In a series where the away team won all 7 games, this was the closest we could get to a home field crowd.

Since some of y'all have clearly failed to realize, no trash cans were required for the Astros to be great. 6 straight ALCS, 4 WS in 6 years and 2 titles (should've been 3 if not for Hinch). Both of those titles in spite of poor managers. And the fact that the innovator of the scandal (Alex Cora) was responsible for the 2018 ALCS loss to Boston. This Astros team of the past 7 years rivals the 96-01 Yankees as the greatest dynasty of the modern era.

As for why… you’d have to ask Carlos Beltran (who told the young team they needed to catch up to the league in their sign stealing) and Alex Cora (who was the mastermind behind the method). The team obviously didn’t need to cheat, as they handled the Dodgers in two games in LA. And they also made it to 5 more ALCS after they stopped using them.

As a Washington sports fan I will say I don't hold it too much against Rizzo for shutting down Strasburg in 2012. The Redskins (Commanders) showed us the dangers of rushing back your team's star player with RG3. They rushed him back for that playoff run with a knee healthy enough to play but not healthy enough to stay intact. After he went down then he was never the same again. If we maybe rested him for the rest of the season and playoffs like Strasburg maybe they would have had a mini dynasty like the Nats did. Strasburg getting shut down I believe helped prolong his career just long enough for him to get through the title run. If we played him in 2012 he might've blown out his arm again in the playoffs and we might've nose-dived into a rebuild.

i know a lot of it gets over looked by the cheating , but man that game is heartbreaking and as Greinke fan and an Astros fan: Greinke is pitching the game of his life, making multiple gold glove assists to and strike outs. His iconic “it’s gonna be a big game” interview and then a brilliant performance while looked unbothered by being at the biggest stage. He gave up that homer and the gets Soto to two Strikes. Greinke throws a strike down the middle which blue calls a ball, making greinke throw another pitch out of the zone which led to the walk. While being red hot and not wanting to leave the game, and zack having too much anxiety to make a scene , he leaves the game and the astros give up the lead two pitches afterwards. The rest is history, the scandal broke and the astros have been hated ever since; but the story of Greinke being pulled out is always a heart breaking one here in Houston.

In Game 7 Greinke was just slapping everyone around and plowing through them like they were nothing. As a Nats fan, I can say with full 100% confidence that if Greinke doesn't get pulled from the game at that moment, the Nats don't win the World Series. A move that still baffles me, by the way. I know the NLCS MVP was coming up to bat, but aside from the last 2 batters Greinke was DEALING and only had 80 pitches!! They hadn't been able to do anything against him all game long. No WAY they're able to muster up anything or have the comeback they did if Greinke's still in there. So thanks AJ Hinch for taking Greinke out and handing the World Series to us, because I'm fully confident we don't win it if you don't do that

2018 and 2019 were magical years for DC sports. Both the Caps and Nats were practically identical franchises -- both consistently awful until some time around 2010 when they locked in extremely talented rosters that consistently led their respective league in the regular season, but inevitably chocked in the first round of the playoffs. Even in some of their best years through the 2010s it felt like no one had hope once the postseason came around. But something just clicked those years and it felt like the entire town was buzzing with excitement for both of their runs right from the start. It was truly special.

The parallels between the 2019 Nats and the 2005 Astros are fascinating: both lost a critical superstar to free agency (Harper and Beltran) both were declared dead in May, but somehow defied to odds to win a pennant with some clutch pitching and face off against a dominant super team (the 2019 Astros and '05 White Sox ). Of course the Nationals actually managed to win World Series games.

3 factors that caused the Astros to lose this World Series. 1- Hinch pulling Grienke to early and not putting in Gerit Cole when he did. 2- Justin Verlander being absolutely horrible in World Series games and losing both home games he pitched in and getting lit up in both games. 3- Houston's home field disadvantage that is still alive to this day.

As a Nats fan, I'm super disappointed in this video. The Strasburg shutdown was not why they lost in 2012. That had a lot more to do with Gio Gonzalez and Drew Storen melting down in game 5. Strasburg wouldn't have pitched game 5 of that series anyway - Gio was the workhorse of that staff. Ad now that we're in 2023 with the benefit of hindsight, Strasburg just retired due to...cumulative long-term injuries that shortened his career. It's pretty clear that the shutdown had some solid logic behind it, but whoever did this video couldn't be bothered to do a bit of basic research, I guess. This is the kind of analysis I'd expect from some talking head on ESPN Radio. Also, how do you go that long without mentioning Juan Soto? Come on, do better.

Welp, I remember 2012 a little differently. I remember Strasburg giving up 7 runs to the lowly Marlins late in the season. I remember thinking he was spent. I remember agreeing with management to sit him. And I also remember most fans agreeing with the decision in later years. And if you’ll remember, Stras himself said he always appreciated the organization putting him first. Oh, and then there’s the WS MVP thing. So, yeah, not sure I agree with that part of the story so much. But still a cool video! Thanks!!!

The Nationals on are the hook for $105 million over the next 3 seasons left on Strasburg’s contract. At the end of Strasburg’s contract, the Nationals will have paid Strasburg $245 million to pitch a total of 31 1/3 innings. Oh, and btw, none of Strasburg’s contract is insured, so the Nationals are on the hook for every single penny of the contract.
