I had hip length hair. Told the stylist my hair was healthy but it was time for a trim. She told me you probably just don't see them. I said ok. When she was done shampooing combed out my really thick hair. Told 2 people to come check it out. And then said your right completely healthy hair. How to you do that? I said no heat no dryers no curling irons. The other woman said NO HEAT??!! How long does it take 4 ur hair to dry I said @ least 12 hours. I thought she was going to drop her teeth. Lol their reaction was priceless
As a stylist…Just to let ppl know. Just because you see see through ends does not mean they are necessarily split. Just means thinning. But here yes, those are splits but I’m just saying when you are getting your hair trimmed. Unless the stylist will let you see there’s actual splits (as in strands that look like that have two heads or look like forks in the road) don’t just let them cut it. I can’t tell you how many close up videos I see when a stylist will cut hair unnecessarily just because it’s thin on the ends. Thin does not mean splits. Could be a diet change or hormonal changes that made your hair start growing thicker or even your hair routine!
I’m no stylist, but I definitely recognized where the trim line was needed before she started cutting. I remember getting a trim, and immediately noticed the difference in movement with my hair! Trims are so vital!
Her hair stylist actually is so misleading. Her ends aren't split, some people want to blunt cut the tapered ends to make their hair look thicker which is fine but that stylist just cut several inches of healthy hair.
Split ends are usually when the ends of each hair strand are split into two or more.. it looks like some of her hair is longer than other portions of her hair that are thicker.. when hair looks like this, it doesn’t always equate to ‘split ends’
Exactly. My hair grows uneven. I kept cutting to make it even thinking it was unhealthy. But after multiple big chops I realized that's just how some people's hair grows. Doesn't mean unhealthy hair or split ends
How do all these stylists do zero degree cuts saying it's thinning/damaged when that's not case at all. The hair growing from the bottom of your head will hit your back sooner than the hair growing from the top, making the hair appear like it's thin wherever those stands don't overlap. I can understand doing that cut for aesthetic purposes but those stylists telling clients it's damaged hair is messed up.
Licensed cosmetologist here. Every persons hair is not thick whether it’s natural or chemically treated. Some hair is just naturally thin. The diameter of the hair also decreases as it reaches the ends of the hair strands which results in thinning ends. Thin ends don’t always equal split ends.
Thank you for clarifying. My hair has always been thin and it's really grown recently. I was seeing through it in pictures so I thought I had to cut it by half😬. I'll go to a hairdresser to get it checked and trimmed if I have split ends.
That being said... this hair needed that trim. The client had very uneven length. Seems some parts of her hair were experiencing breakage leaving other areas longer and looking sparce. Also the longer hair also looks very dry and damage / compromised. It needed to be trimmed
Right. And, some times... Its not split, thinning or damage hair. It could be, hair is growing at different times. Which, causes it to look like one or the Three.
We don’t know what her reaction was 😂 its not cool to cut ppl hair without letting them know exactly how much. Whether it needs to be cut or not not the stylist’s decision
The split ends leads to hair breaking off where the split stops causing the strand of hair to be thinner. If all the stands are split and break off then you end up with thinning on the ends. The hair may be long but it is damaged, if not cut at or above the split then the strand keeps separating and the breakage is higher on the strand eventually breaking near the scalp. The best and healthiest decision is to cut
@@kayceeyoung8480She kept quiet as the woman explained herself coming into the salon. I’m pretty sure she had to explain things to the client after washing and blow drying. Cause to cut that much hair would’ve caused a negative reaction without being prepared…especially in the black community! Because many of us have trauma (or low self-esteem) around our hair and damn near ALL of us place it on a pedestal of importance to various degrees and for different reasons.
I think what makes people with long hair(myself) included, scared to get a trim, some hairstylists are scissors happy, they just start chopping and chopping 😢! Stylist, please, let us talk about this 😮!
Facts! Did my own for years thought I'd give a stylist another try. She thought my SLIGHTLY wavy hair was curly. She cut all these layers in my hair on the third visit! My hair is basically straight unless I purposely curl it. I couldn't see what she was doing and had warned her first visit that I didn't want layers around and up all my hair. 😢😢😢😢 Growing it out now putting lots of conditioner to blend the stupid sticking out Layers. Refuse to cut it up to my chin. I am NEVER going back to a stylist again. I'll cut my own thanks (and she was not cheap)
That's exactly why I just do trim on myself every two weeks.hair still grows with split ends, but trimming regularly always helps. The hairstylists I've met are either liars or just can't approximate length 🤷🏻♀️
She needed that. She found someone to help her start to take care of her hair and maintain its health. You stopped her hair from splitting up. Mission accomplished 💯❤️
@@Sunshine27234 wrong. Thinning ends could also be an indicator of post partum, diseases like Cov¡d or change in hormones . However, once things go back to normal, the new hair will grow out thicker which obviously makes the ends look really thin and bad. But that doesn't necessarily mean the ends are split
This has inspired me to get my ends checked. When I first started taking care of my natural hair, I had all the split ends cut off. Boy did the growth jump. Six weeks later I had no ends. That was a long time ago.
Everyone talking about that, but my hair is see through from the end to the root.. I have think and medium density hair.. I always thought it was split end and I always cut my hair from time to time but it grows the same way… so girls sometimes it’s just our hair
Yup. I'm glad my cuz ex gf who was a great stylist taught me that. She never wanted to cut my hair when I asked her to. She said I also have hair that doesn't grow evenly, so depending on how you style you don't need to trim often. Even if this young lady did have some splitends this video did not prove any of that because this is not how you look for split ends
I was a stylist for over 25years and also have thin hair. I taught people how to recognize split ends. You have to look at the end of the hair strand, not transparency.
Does cutting it make it look better or thicker? I just think that thin hair always looks like the hai is just not covering properly. Therefore, I would cut and curl for a more body appearance. I guess. My hair is thick as heck, so I don't know your journey.
@@wandathompson2319 depends on the cut, how thin or fine the hair is and the style you wear it in. I've always had fine but thick hair. Now that my hair thinning due to illness and hereditary. I don't try to make it even. Most people won't look and know it's 30% thinner than it used to be because I previously had such dense coverage. Even my non growing patches along the hairline is undetectable to most. I feel for people who always had less coverage.

It seems a lot of ppl, stylists included, don’t know the difference between split ends and thin ends. Stylists are there to do just that; style your hair. Now a trichologist….thats where you will understand what your hair needs ❤
I think it's out of wanting to educate that you sometimes can't see what they see after prepping the hair. She leaves as much length as is worth it. This person will have received quality service, imo.
@lanadelrio-op6xz Nothing. This video was about a woman so they just catered to women. And she right. I didnt know wtf split ends were until i was 18.
@@goddesstif she doesn't wear it straight often then it won't make a difference. @@Trisha-jq4fd I went through some of her other videos to see if maybe we're not seeing this in it's full context, but it appears she cuts all her clients this way. And what is the purpose of doing it this way unless the clients all wear their hair straight exclusively which I don't believe this specific client did initially

Thinning ends are caused by breakage, and breakage eventually leads to splitting. Stylists know this more than anyone else, and both issues need to be resolved with a trim to ensure healthy and thick growth. Many of you are in denial and delusional about someone's actually profession over your discomfort. Which is why many stylists do not do the hair of delusional clients. You're not going to be asking me to play captain fix a lot when you are actively contributing to the issues you're thinking deep conditioners and oils will fix.
Why does everyone only cut straight across now? My stylist would never do me wrong like that....she would guve me feathered layered when she did a huge chop on my ends so i would still have shape to my hair and it wouldn't look like a blunt bob
These new stylists in recent years do cut like that. Maybe I’m old but I remember getting trims in quadrants then they trim the middle. This video was cut short but she could have gone in and did layers later idk
Cause they don’t know what they are doing! This is not how you cut hair, especially for health! She doesn’t show us split ends, just thinning ends, which does not necessarily correlate to split ends! Try the Afrikan hair god! He knows all about healthy hair!
@loredanadincu4300 Calm the heck down. Just because you are on the internet doesn't mean you can talk to people any way that you like. You're really rude.
Here's my controversial take as a woman growing her hair for nearly a decade 1) Those are just fairytale ends. Natural breakage and variation in length as each hair follicle has its own growth and fall cycle 2) Split ends serve a purpose, now the "healthy hair" will just take the brunt of the damage and become the same 3) If you want your hair longer, grow it longer regardless of if it fairytales (which some people find beautiful) or splits, and then trim to maintain once you reach your goal length, to gradually increase fullness Tired of the fake war on "damaged hair" >_< But salons have to make money..
I Don’t mean to be rude but why does thin versus thick ends automatically mean split. It is often not the case. We should start looking at groups who have long hair such as Indians. There is no excessive trimming but use of oil. It is possible to have less hair at the ends without it being split. Her hair doesn’t look particularly nice like that, but did all of it have to be cut off? Was that all truly split? One of the reasons many black people do not have long hair is due to the obsession with trims. A trim is not needed every 1-2 months. You can trim even once a year or less if you are caring for your hair and keeping it moisturized
If she hadn't been caring for her hair for awhile, it was probably damaged. I'm sure that she wouldn't have cut that much off unless it was necessary. It's easier to care for heathier hair.
Because when your hair is this bad you can literally see where the hair broke off. You can tell she naturally has thick hair based on the roots and mid shafts. If she naturally had thin hair it would look like that from roots to ends
@@tyheviadavis2807 From this video, we didn't even get a close up. Your ends are usually thinner than the rest of your hair. So we can't say anything is obvious. We are just so use to seeing the see through test. Plus these blunt cuts can also hide damage. It just makes your hair appear stronger.
See through does not always mean split ends. I literally have no split ends. However, when I take my hair out of its natural state and blow dry it. It looks just like hers. The longer my hair gets the curls loosen towards the bottom. No breakage. No split ends. Cutting layers looks great for this type of hair if you want to wear it straight.
This was my story for years but for me it was annoying. I was constantly doing tiny trims. My hair WAS this length 2 weeks ago. However after years of hanging on to thin ends, I started doing 2inches every 3months only for my hair to grow back 4-6in. What I realized is those tiny trims and 2inch cut each time, killed my progress. I finally got it cut above th thin area because I was tired of the tangles and losing progress. I'm not worried, my hair grows like a weed. But to each her own.
Those are split/damaged ends. If it doesn’t get cut, it’s going to keep rising up the hair shaft. There should never be that drastic of a density. If your ends are that sparse you have breakage that needs to be trimmed off.
@@Mel-so2rw it could also be a drastic amount of hair shedding. This is why you see women of other races with tapered ends, yet the hair continues to get longer. Hair is usually never completely dense throughout the length of the hair.
This is thin ends, not split ends. Obviously the hair is thinner because of break damage from combing, brushing, or styling methods, so yes the thin ends need trimming. Split ends are when you examine each tip individually and see a “Y” at the tips.
I'm a Rapunzel girl, so, I've NEVER trimmed My hair before for DECADES, but I had hair like hers, wispy at the end, trimmed it off, looked great and healthier!
Why are split ends always deemed to be the problem? Hair shedding is natural, but not uniform. Why is there never the consideration that shorter hairs are those that she'd more recently that the longer ones?
Probably to the untrained person claiming to be the best. Thats why you gotta shop around and read reviews and watch videos of their work. I’m not even trained but can see the thinness of all that she cut off.
Once you cut off the split ends, her hair is going to be so much healthier, and flowing. It will grow especially with scalp massages. She’s going to love it ❤
What’s crazy is sometimes the hair is just uneven when straight because the curls are different lengths to shape the fro. Her ends probably weren’t all that split, just uneven
Baby my hair lady just got me together last month and baby when i tell you wash day was glorious!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾 😭 i could not believe that i didn't have to fight with my hair 😂😂 and it took like an hour off my process. Moral of the story: if you have a good hair lady, just do what she says is necessary!! 😂❤
How do you know the client wasn't told? This is a voice-over video & stylists do consultations before providing services. I'm sure the client seen what her hair looked like from the back & knew how much was coming off.
She said she kept quiet after the client said her hair had no splits and until she actually assessed the state of the hair for herself. You made such a bad faith interpretation with no proof...
Some stylist do chop away without communication. My last trim was this week. I wanted 5 inches off. I told her I wanted the front slightly shorter. She took out the measuring stick. When it came to my front she said ok this is 5, but 6 would take it slightly shorter, is this going too be too short for you?. She showed me what she was going to cut. I said I don't need to hang onto those strings, you can cut those off. 😂 She chuckled and clipped it off. Some people need to hold onto the thin strings because they feel it gives them length. But it doesn't look good anyway.
This is a *new* "stylist" thing. I never saw anyone cutting this lazy until a few years back, and I'm almost 40. That is not the way to do it, like at all.
@@arianneess47there'd nothing lazy sbout cutting straught vs layers. Not everyone wnats layers people woll litterlaly request to have their hair all yhe same length so cut straught across
Any cosmetology book or teacher will show you that split ends are literally strands that are open at the ends. You can see them when you look closely. These are thinning/uneven. They are not the same as split ends. They may also be split but you have to look at each up close to accurately determine that. 🔍
@user-uu1kn2np6c split ends are forked at the end (or other parts), they literally split. Like an untied rope. Split ends can cause breakage but theoretically you could just have uneven strands that broke off due to rough care
@user-uu1kn2np6c split ends are exactly what it says. The single hair strand is split at the end and can run the length of the hair. That look like uneven hair. The ends may or may not be split.
THANK YOU!! You can not see where to cut until it is fully straightened. Hair is SUPPOSED to be uneven to an extent. We do not grow hair as a blunt cut. Try this with someone with thick hair, and their hair will look a mess when the humidity hits.
I went to the same hairdresser for years before she retired. When I started with her, she said “I believe in healthy hair. If we work together, and you come on a regular basis your hair will be healthy and it will grow.” She stressed limiting heat, dying the hair at home, getting regular trims. I have fine hair that is various textures. I had a relaxer and discovered other hair dressers had been over processing my hair. Anyway, she put me on a schedule for trims, relaxers, and deep conditioning. She also told me I couldn’t get any color change that required bleach because my hair would severely break. Finally, she told me my hair represented her and she didn’t want a client who wouldn’t work with her and get and keep healthy hair. Anyway, I came to her with a pixie cut and ended up with hair almost to my bra strap. And I had a relaxer the entire time! Yes, she trimmed my hair every time she relaxed it. Also, when I came to her my hair was over processed and cut short to cover up the damage. She was very transparent and I miss her. I went through several stylists before I got a good one. She guided my hair from relaxed to natural and through a bout of alopecia that was caused by stress. It’s extremely important to have a trusting relationship with your hair dresser. You both have to agree on a plan for your hair. If the person you’re going to doesn’t do a consultation and suggest a plan. Get out of the chair. You’re in the wrong place.
Just because you can see through it doesn't mean its split. Some people have fine hair. You actually have to look at the hair. You probably cut more off than what is needed.
@@thedivinefeminine1821 your strands can be thin while your destiny overall (how many strands you have) can be above average making it appear thicker. When comparing your strands you compare to a single piece of thread, if its not as thick as the strand its thin, if its thicker you have thick strands of hair. I have thin strands but amazing destiny which makes people think I have regular thick hair. Why would you cut straight across. Should have cut in sections. This woman’s hair is never going to grow more than 2 inches if you keep cutting like that. Stylist love to cut.
Let’s go back to the old school stylists that took their time to last each section and trim it securing by section. This straight across cut will never sit well with me!
That is the 1st step. Its called cleaning up the perimeter then they go back and cut the inside at an angle then do the front.do you know anything about hair ?

Trims do make hair grow more actually because if yoru ends are split they will go up yhe hair causing more ahir to fall out and you won't even know your hqirs growing bc the min it grows it falls back out.
@@Havis_PrincessAgreed. Longest hair I had in my life came from trimming my hair. If women always have new growth but their hair never gets longer it’s because they are loosing it from the ends. Know when to trim before it goes up the shaft and you need a big cut.
This lady needed it though. I bet her hair stayed tangled at the ends because the density is different, causing more split ends and doing tiny trims or dusting. That's why it LOOKS like she doesn't need "a lot" cut. When your hair can get to this length, it looks so much better if you can't see through it.
In my experience, thin ends are just the long way around split ends, because thin ends make tangels ,tangles lead to brakeage, breakage means ur gonna start seeing alot of dead and split ends.

But I learned how to be grateful that my scalp and hair follicles are enough to even GROW my hair. So I love how it looks and feels cut, but healthy and having PATIENCE that it will all grow back in time (probably faster) instead of leaving longer damaged hair there for length even if it looks fried and broken just to "say" I have long hair. Just because the hair is thin does not mean it is split. Of course the ends of the longest sections of hair will be thinner unless they are deliberately cut to match the lengths of the hair higher on the head. This split ends misinformation is crazy. Cutting hair does not make it "healthier".

Stylists like this are not gonna see pearly gates for the way they lie. She doesn't have splits, hair tapers towards the bottom thats natural. If she wanted you to cut her hair to make it look thicker and more blunt then have it at it but you just chopped off healthy hair from that lady.
I agree it’s not always split I feel it didn’t need to be cut tht much off sometimes we as stylist has to be careful I learned this from experience so now I assess the house with my ass like a fan tooth comb to make sure that is splitting or is it just thinning we have to be careful because sometimes so much cutting. We really are cutting our clients hair so for me I just snip a little bit away until I see time, exactly what the problem is and a lot of the times and finding out that is not split is it’s just thinning of the hair towards the bottom meaning length
That problem has been going on for a long time! You still needed to cut it higher to give her a fresh start. Vanity or attachment has to go out the window.
