This was such a cool interview! I'm a historian: one of the things people often overlook is how important sex work is, and has been, in society. Like, in the American West of the late 1800s, sex workers were often the most wealthy and financially stable citizens of frontier towns. Those ladies paid for roads and schools, raised money in the event of a mining accident, and championed the performing arts (like, obvi lol). The historian Jan MacKell Collins has a bunch of books about sex work and the growth of America. Anyway, super cool getting a de-stigmatizing glimpse at the modern industry! Thanks for sharing!

I have committed my entire adult life to the industry of performing either at home or in clubs and it makes me feel really seen that this is the first comment I saw. thank you for being you. Archeologist here and I agree! Sex work has kept so many empires and economic systems afloat during what would've otherwise been a sharp decline and erasure of entire civilisations kingdoms and settlements. It's staggering how demonised sex work is when it's not only really hard work but it can risk your life and health if you're not careful. It needs to be destigmatised, and I think videos like this tend to help us do that.

My mum was a dancer before I was born That is how she met my daddy. He was security at the club she worked at. While I don't pole dance, I can appreciate the art of it

I’m a retired stripper. I miss being on stage, wearing pleaser heels, makeup, hair extensions, and my stripper outfits. I worked at a fully nude strip club. I had to be naked on stage on my second song. I had so much fun and it’s going to be a time of my life that I would never forget because I met so many wonderful people.

Every stripper I've met has been an astoundingly hard worker. The mental fortitude, physical strength, and emotional intelligence required are more than I could ever have. My partner has an OF, and people ask if I'm upset about it, as if there are any downsides to dating someone who has that body confidence and knows how to hustle.

Omg I agree about people assuming it’s easy. I always respond with “K cool...so why aren’t you doing it???” My personal pet peeve is people assuming sex work = having sex with clients. It’s an umbrella term for sexually charged work or sexually expressive work. Not much of it has anything to do with actually having sex. In fact, everything outside of full prostitution or porn doesn’t involve having sex. Most places don’t let you touch the dancers at all.

Lol on the accounting part. I worked as a stripper in the 1980s on weekends only my senior year of college. The financial aid office cut my student loan and my books, dorm, and 5 meals a week were all that I was going to have. So I talked to a stripper bar and found that I could work friday and saturday nights only and always have sunday to study for any tests on monday. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Accounting and have been working in accounting all these years. In the 80s we didn't have house moms, you tipped out to the DJ. and after close we all went in the dressing room and put on our clothes and then we had to sit down in the bar until the bouncers came back in after they had made sure all customers had left and driven off on down the road, then we could leave. I think that prevented a lot of bad things that could have happened from happening. This was really interesting.

I never would have realized that different areas are looking for different aesthetics. I mean it makes sense, most industries are like that, but I never would have applied it to stripping. That was really eye-opening.

Another thing to keep yourself safe as a sex worker is really knowing what your boundaries are and communicating that with your clients beforehand/when they break those boundaries. Being confident in saying no to someone and realizing your actual self worth and taking that in account to what your boundaries are is sooo crucial. Something I definitely have struggled with in the past. Also, I was hoping a question about family vs. sex work is like for other people :(

This made me feel very seen on my birthday and I am a currently retired until one more surgery and rehabilitation but I dream of the club in most of my dreams tbh I love performing. Your friend describes this so well. The locker room talk is just a lot of wondering when day shift will pick up and eating snacks with friends some would study or read. I loved it because I felt at home there. I recently lost a friend and he was our door guy - since then I dream about the club more and this video makes me want to keep dancing. Thank you with all of my being.

Thank you for this humbling interview! I have close friends who have tried the business and have been in very scary situations (like could have ended in death). Cops were not called due to the stigma of being a sex worker. It’s not ok and sex workers deserve to be safe too! Thank you!! Everyone should see this video and become aware without judgement.

Just because you choose to do sex work doesn't make you any less of a human. Glad to see there are those out there who are in the industry by choice and enjoy the work. Also, I loved to see that she was very positive about getting rid of the stigma around sex work. If sex work was accepted as real work I think that sex workers could get more protection and achieve higher safety in their work environments.

I know some girls who work at Shot Guns and at La Bohem (I can't spell for shit) and I myself worked in a club and it was simultaneously the best and worst job ever. You could walk away with so much money or you could walk away with none. The sexual harassment and all the things you need to do for your own safety really weigh down on you emotionally and I wish that it was talked about more. Sex work is not just easy work, it's WORK and it's not for everyone and it's not something that will get you thousands of dollars in a weekend instantly. You have to work on your hussle and you have to really work to find your own "brand".

Coming from a rural midwestern state I've always advocated for legal sex work. Anyone choosing such a demanding profession deserves to be respected and protected. Are there any ongoing workshops where experienced workers (or speakers) can share advice, boost morale, mental health awareness and tax advice? It was legal for me to claim part of my wardrobe for my job, so sex workers should be able to claim clothing, shoes, makeup, supplies. I enjoyed this video.

I would have to ask isn’t that a form of racism and discrimination basing and judging a job or form of work on the Woman’s Body Type??? To say if a Black Dancer from GA or from any State won’t get hired base on how big her butt is in CO is 100% to the core! Is that to say if you are white or white looking with a firm breast and big butt will that same Woman that isn’t Black or from GA will she still get hired in CO???

Lately I've been wondering abt the pole industry and if it's for me, but I've had **some** dancing experience but not anything relating to a pole, so I wouldn't have any idea of how to start, like do I go to the dance studios to learn first or do you gain the experience on the job? I don't know for sure, but I would say your interview/audition would go better if you have some experience. You might not have to be an expert, but get some experience in the studio setting. It will be safer too because as the Witch of Wonderlust has said in the past, the pole is safer in a studio to learn. I have never done any of it, but just from what she was saying.
