I really struggle to see how the Shah thought antagonizing Ghenghis was gonna work out for him. Like, he knew how dangerous the Mongols were. His scouts had found the capital of the Jin-dynasty, his largest trading partner, a city where almost a million people lived, utterly destroyed. The Jin had around ten times his population, but he thought he could handle the force that destroyed them? "I don't know guys, these Mongols don't look that tough to me."

Shah was an aristrocat not an able leader but got the throne through ancestry.His administration were fully immersed in corruption . Due to small victories on the eastern side power corrupts that dude .None of his generals and advisers were meritorious. Power corrupts the man. But Genghis Khan was a real Conqueror who created Mongol Empire .Strategically innovative and well organized . Shahs old barrack based army was no match for the Khan modern military.

You have to understand that after Gheghis khan’s death. The expansion rapidly increased. And at its peak, Mongols were fighting Japanese Samurai, entire China, entire Muslim world, German Teutonic knights all at the same time. Very busy people.

@@happyalphonse1456 Yeah the Japanese were saved twice by typhoons, but the _Javanese_ (Majapahit) deserve some credit for outsmarting the Mongols at their own game. The Javanese were in the middle of internal conflict when Kublai Khan invaded Indonesia, which you'd think would make them easy target for conquest. Instead, some clever Javanese faction led by a guy named Raden Wijaya feigned submission to Kublai Khan and convinced the Mongols the real resistance was his own rivals. Supported by his newfound "overlords," Wijaya went on to eliminate his enemies before finally turning on the Mongols, ambushing them while they got drunk during celebrations over their supposed "conquest" of Indonesia. The whole thing was planned from the start.

@@Kamisama77 not ottomans. Ottomans fought Timur's empire which is not the same. Mongols fought against the Sultanate of Rum and Mamluks. But since the word "Mamluks" is new, it used to be called simply al-Dawla al-Turkiyya or the State of Turkey by Arabs during the same period due to the bulk of the army consisting of Turkic tribes and Circassians. During Mongol invasions, the Sultanate of Mamluk was governed by Ayyubid sultans therefore...Mongols got stopped by basically an Arabic dynasty with a Turkic army and court. About the notion of stopping Islamic influence...it actually never did. Because the Sultanate of Rum was already in turmoil during their invasion, it probably halted advance for like 40 years maximum. Also considering immediately after Temujin's death and the breakup of the Mongol empire newly formed Mongol states like Ilkhanate converted to Islam, it's hard to call it "stopping". More like...helped to solidify its influence.

Also persian history seems to be actively erased from western schools for some reason. For example Roman emperors spoke in same standing with Persian kings, but you only see Roman and Greek historian versions, never the Persian version.

The Khwarazmian Empire was simply screwed here. At the time of this Mongolian invasion, the Mongols were at the peak of their power and unified under Genghis Khan. Their armies were campaign veterans and Genghis had a an array of top notch generals. Not only that, Genghis Khan led the invasion himself with his all star generals with him. Russia and a lot of Eastern Europe would feel this brutality also, the Khwarazmian Empire was only the first out west to be in line for it. The only reason the Mongol Invasion ended was due to Genghis Khan dying and protocol dictated the various leaders go home for the succession. With Genghis Khan's passing the Mongols were never quite as unified and focused as they were while being led by him.

When Genghis Khan died, he was out in the Far East and the Khwarazmian Empire was already long gone. Genghis Khan died in 1227. Already in the 1240s there's already the start of the power struggles for leadership. The 1260s brought outright civil war.

Fun fact the Italian merchants literally just paid tribute when the the Mongols arrived. The Mongols wanted to sack the city but the merchants wanted trade, so there's kinda just city states on the black sea.

This is such a good video holy hell. It's such a brutal and jarring story written AND narrated to literal perfection. The oil painting-like depictions of scenes give the characters and locations life and real sense of recognition in your head. The story transitions are seamless and the music and pulsating battle themes are so thematically appropriate they just blend right in, but the video never dwells on one particular feature, it just hits you with back to back transitions of beautiful scenic hand crafted paintings and lively audio. My favorite scene was the description of the Mongol ravaging of China, it is such a horrific scene with eye catching imagery that really prods your imagination as to the true power and influence of the Mongol Empire. I wish I could like a RU-vid video more than once, seriously, you two need to continue to create stuff like this, because this is so incredibly unique while still being easily digestible to all kinds of audiences, this is amazing.

I'm glad that more and more people are starting to learn about the Mongol Empire under Genghis and his descendants because the stuff they accomplished PURELY in terms of military strategy and achievements and the scale and speed with which they accomplished it are completely unprecedented even to this day. The famous Mongolian horseback archery tactics and hit-and-run strategies are so hard to replicate realistically, even with CGI, that there has not been a single movie that actually depicts it with any sort of justice. The best way to see what the Mongols did to their enemies is probably by playing Mount and Blade: Bannerlord. On an open or mostly open plain, these dudes were never going to lose to anybody, not at their best. Temujin/Genghis Khan was literally an orphaned slave at one point, had to become man of the house as an on-the-run teenager, didn't have any of the advantages of Alexander the Great, Caesar, Napoleon, etc. (Aristotle was Alexander's tutor for crying out loud)--that is to say, he wasn't formally educated in any way that we would recognize today--and he took a bunch of what were essentially low-tech nomadic shepherds and hunters and conquered most of the known world with them. His descendants remained feared, respected, and in power for centuries. "Khan" remains a common last name in India. All of this is so absurdly impressive that even anime writers would have thought it was too ridiculous to turn into a script.

@@dsmith377 MANY other cultures did things very similar to the Mongols. The Arabs had heads of Turkic people mounted on spears , and these spears went from the cities they sacked to Syr Darya. They told cities to surrender and be spared , and sacked those cities as well. Not saying what the Mongols did was justified , just saying that people who followed Abrahamic religions heavily downplayed their own brutality while exaggarating the brutality of "heretics"

A big oversight by the shah was that he thought they would be safe behind their city walls and castles against Genghis not knowing that the mongols have brought thousands of chinese siege engineers from their conquest of China and had time to become masters at siege warfare. Each city fell one by one and forcing many to either slowly die off or venture out into the open field and get annihilated. No where was safe and what was certain in the end was death. What a terrifying thought that is...

i think the Shah's reasoning is not entirely stupid. The Shah's rule is founded on his claim that he's a badass conqueror. Of course he cannot afford to look like he's scared of the Mongols. Thus he thought of challenging the mongols, but in a way that he could win. As mighty as the mongols were they have to travel from very far, supplies should prove difficult, and siege engines should be hard to come by, the Shah bet that even if the mongols attack, it has to be on a scale he can beat. Defeating the mongols should make him supreme ruler of the world indeed. Thus he place his bets. He just did not anticipate that all his calculations would be wrong: The mongols had no problem at all with supplies, thus can come in large numbers, and they are very very fast and can come from just about anywhere, and that they would be *extremely pissed off*. To say he bit off more than he can chew is a vast understatement...

One more thing to note is that he already fought a field battle against the Mongols before the invasion. They outnumbered the Mongols but couldn't deal a decisive blow. This may have contributed to a more defensive front.

This is the best history channel I’ve ever seen. Narrator is amazing keeps a great pace and makes the stories more compelling. Awesome artwork. The mongols being the subject doesn’t hurt either. They were the ultimate military force of that time period. If Ghengis didn’t die they would have taken Europe but maybe not England. They couldn’t take Japan so they had problems with islands.

I disagree the europeans had already started to negotiate an alliance with the mongols even before Genghis died and surprisingly the mongols were also interested. That being said as more and more cities were razed brutally, they started to reconsider this approach.

Thanks to the 86 tv series I realised how dramatic and exciting the rise of Shaka Zulu could be, he was a legend, an illegitimate son adopted by an enemy tribe who came back and conquered all other tribes and literally revolutionised warfare completely isolated from any foreign interference. Shame he was backstabbed by his brother. I do wonder how history might've turned out with Shaka Zulu and heirs conflicting with Britain further, I mean the Zulu managed to defeat the British with luck at the Battle of Asandlwana but perhaps im overstating or overexaggerating Shaka's smarts but I wonder if he could've dealt the British an even larger blow.

I do think the Khwarazmians would of done much better with Jalal al-Din Mangburni in charge of the main force rather than his father. Even Genghis Khan himself acknowledged the bravery and courage of Jalal al-Din. And by the way, this video was outstanding!

The Armenians actually rather liked the Mongols. If tribute was paid and the Yassa was followed, they generally left you alone. If the Mongols sent a peace offering of golden treasure, it was a very smart idea to accept whatever arrangement they proposed.

A king or Emperor should be wise , diplomatic and a keen observer .Shah Mohammed already knew the brutality of Mongols ,his emissaries reported to him the hell of the Zhongdu or Beijing. Without any preparation or prior intelligence he just undiplomatically provoked Genghis Khan. Never took any effort to learn how they managed to wiped out the Chinese empires.This Shah Muhammed and his petty royals like Inalchuq betrayed poor Iranians and made them scapegoats

They certainly want to be friend with Khwarazmian Empire. By all account and military movement before this, the Mongol was only interested in expanding in today's China's area. Yet, when Khwarazmian Empire killed their ambassador caravans twice...Genghis Khan completely turned his eyes to Khwarazmian Empire. He essentially mobilized his entire Mongol Empire to attack Khwarazmian Empire. 9/10 of his force was attacking Khwarazmian Empire, and only kept 1/10 guiding Mongol.

@@Chemicalkinetics Yes, Mongols had resentment towards south, part of the reason their politics didn't allow Mongols to unite instead kill each other for years and years. And China wanted to tax, Great Wall of China was there for a reason, China was far superior if they were united. Mongols didn't invade India because they didn't give a reason but in the west they were way too brutal after killing of their envoys. The brutal massacre didn't stop until they reached Europe and until the Khan died.

@@MGZetta For the history I have read, Mongol is pretty brutal every where in numerous invasion in different part of China (to be clear, back then there were about 3-4 nations in today's China area). The invasion of the west is especially brutal, but it wasn't like the Mongol was kind in other invasion. They often massacred an entire city after successful invasion.
