I remember when they deregulated the energy companies in my state. "It will reduce operating costs, rates will go down!" Actually, no, theres now only 1 energy supplier for the entire state, they charge whatever the hell they want while delivering slower, crappier service. They were right though, it certainly did lower operating costs, but such reductions never get translated into customer savings.

One of capitalism's inherent contradictions is that it requires competition, yet without significant regulation (anti-trust laws) it will always tend toward monopolization since participants focus on accumulation of capital, and hence the means of production.
@braeburn2333
@braeburn2333 6 лет назад
If you have ever played a game of monopoly then you know it always ends the same way. One person owns everything and everyone else is bankrupt. Making money with the money previously made causes an accumulation or feedback loop that sucks the wealth right out of every players hands and into the "winners" hand. When the wealth transfer is complete, its game over for everyone.

@braeburn2333
@braeburn2333 6 лет назад
Catobis True, real life is more complex then a game, yet the underlying principal of wealth concentration is true in the real world as well. Wealth has accumulated into the richest 1% in an almost exponential manner. Wealth in the game and in the real world seems to go to the players who were lucky early on and knew how to make money with their money. Eventually fewer and fewer people had any wealth, only debt until only one person pretty much had all the wealth. This is also true of both the game and real world economics. In real life we can see that the same phenomena is playing out on a macro economic scale. When 3 people own and control the capital of more wealth then half the country then one is left asking : How long before almost every body is living in abject poverty while a few families rule the roost? Look at the data that shows wealth distribution over time. The rich get richer nearly exponentially while real wages are dropping when corrected for inflation. Reagan's "Trickle Down" economics turned out to be a gush up of societies wealth into the hands of the luckiest 1% Ive heard the argument that monopoly doesn't apply because the real world is not a zero sum game because more wealth is generated every year as we consume the Earth's resources at an increasing rate. That may have been true when we seemed to be able to grow industry and consumption almost without limits. Now, however, the tide is turning. The abundant resources which used to be available for unlimited economic growth are now getting more dilute and harder and more costly to get. Peak keystone resources will eventually turn the industrial world economy into a negative sum game. In other words there are limits to growth. Without growth there is less and less wealth to go around and eventually the unequal distribution of wealth reaches such an extreme that the government has to financially and materially support those who don't have the wealth to support themselves. Eventually the government goes bankrupt doing this and the currency resets. Wealth gets redistributed as paper assets such as debt based bonds are revalued and the game begins again. It could happen that way.
@tomstdenis
@tomstdenis 6 лет назад
That's literally the point of the game. "Monopoly" was created in protest of unregulated capitalism. That it got bought by MB and then mass produced is ironic.

You presume that it is a socially legitimate goal to determine what is the truth, and what isn't. However this isn't a legitimate social goal, because consensus is not the truth, and is itself hostile to the pursuit of truth. This is why the scientific method is a method, instead of an election process. This is why the catholic church was wrong, and Galileo was right. Society doesn't form a consensus of what is true through a political process, we collectively accept the truth after those with knowledge of the truth are more powerful than those who refuse it. The knowledge itself being the source of individual power, not institutional or political power. Those who have interests in rejecting the truth, almost everyone in positions of power or influence, we expect them to collude and obfuscate any inconvenient facts about the material world. If you accept a false narrative as the truth, your predictions will not be demonstrated correct. Any new science you develop will only be as powerful as the political and institutions that prop it up. It will lack all the powers of truth, it will only have the powers of religion, and not the powers of science.

One of the things that people often leave out of Adam Smith's ideas about capitalistic economic systems is that if governments incentivize or ally with corporations, there is no "free market". I also view this as a national security issue. If everything is provided through one service, it is really easy to bring down. Also, "too big to fail" has somehow become a thing, which is inherently against the idea of a free market. Many, small providers is more diverse, more secure, more generative of new ideas, and ultimately also provides more jobs.

Monsanto is a vile company.
@leovolont
@leovolont 6 лет назад
Yes. In the Old Days farmers could hold back grain from the market to use it for Seeding the next years crop. But somehow Monsanto insists that Seed Grain must be bought every year. And Monsanto hires people to run around and audit every field in America to determine whether any Corn or Soy is somehow growing up where there is not also a receipt on record for Seed Grain purchases. Monsanto has taken farmers to court. One farmer had to defend himself in Court because some lose grain from the year before had sprouted up in a field that was being allowed to go fallow -- Monsanto sued them for having a few stalks spring up in an otherwise empty field. So, yes, Monsanto has ENEMIES. Politicians on the Left could easily swing Farmers from Voting Red as a knee-flex reaction. "Vote for Us and we will see that Monsanto gets Screwed" would be a great Campaign Slogan across all of those Fly Over States.

Leo Volont: I know, it's sick how Monsanto operates. In a poli sci course I took, we had a whole section dedicated to how fucked up our industrial food industries are. @leovolont
@leovolont 6 лет назад
Hi Dudeman, Was Poli Sci your major? What are you doing now?
@leovolont
@leovolont 6 лет назад
Hi Frederic, Well, yes, it is undeniable that through intelligent genetic engineering, one can derive a better seed stock (which is what has been being done since Mendel experimented with his peas, and even before that. the biggest tomatoes and the largest grapes always took the Prize, and the remaining farmers would beg, buy or steal the seeds or vines, and so, even without genetic laboratories, crops were progressively getting bigger and better). But the issue today is that Monsanto is Bigger than Monsanto -- the People who sit on Monsanto's Board of Directors sit on other Boards also (a big living can be made by being on a Board of Directors, and for each chair you get, that's another paycheck. You just have to be famous for being the type of guy (yes, male) who gets along (and goes along) with everybody. ) So All of the Big Buyers in the Grain Market SPECIFY that they will ONLY buy Monsanto Crops. So, otherwise good healthy grain that would otherwise do well on the Market is rendered practically worthless. Also, whatever Monsanto did to make their crops "pest resistance" has screwed up the pollen and is killing all the bees, and, probably, any researcher who gets close to proving it gets in a car accident or has a heart attack before their 50th birthday. that is how we know that only 1 out of 500,000 people in America is an Investigative Journalist. We need Robert Reich in South Korea. Would you please ever come over to explain how unfair the economical system is but why it doesn't looks like that for majority of citizens? Look at Samsung and all its families. Relentlessly expanding itself towards everything, even almost every small convinience stores and domestic restaurants. No regulations are being made here about those unreasonable markets, even by the most liberal government and congress we've ever elected. Because the corporates' power influence every citizen's income and welfare, which means it's very easy to threaten and compromise those citizens' political stance. What can we do about this? What options left? Please help Robert. We're at the peak of our liberal political power, and now's the time to do something that really works.

The Bureau of Corporations was created by Congress on February 14, 1903. It was created to identify and break up monopoly corporations - such as it did with the world's first and largest multinational corporation, Standard Oil, in 1911. If corporations were illegal, it would seem a bit silly to establish a bureau for their oversight, wouldn't it?

Really an outstanding piece. This is the explainer on Antitrust I've been looking for to show to others. ...It's really a crucial issue. Even if you're the biggest pro-market or free-market person, please take a minute to consider how many different industry fields you see that are totally dominated by one or just a couple of major firms. The firms inevitably start twisting and distorting the market circumstances, either legally or semi-legally or worse. Additionally, modern data studies are constantly coming out that show all kinds of terrible effects. Any balanced review of the current state of Antitrust will conclude that we've allowed the whole regulatory process there to be completely captured by vested interests.
@1Tomrider

There are tons of ways corporations get around antitrust laws. For example, 50+ years ago, AT&T started basically carrying small phone companies so no one could say "monopoly." Then there's the fake competition, like car companies, oil companies, etc.
@mshah1193
@mshah1193 5 месяцев назад
All the oil companies are owned by the same shareholders, so technically there is no competition. Try questioning why the US will never allow foreign oil companies from Asia to sell its oil in America? Because that would significantly reduce the cost of oil to consumers and challenge the monopolies in US.

One detail not mentioned is how those big companies create functional monopolies by mutually agreeing to steer clear of each other's area of operations. This is especially egregious with the telecom giants, to the point where people in many states have no choice but to put up with the sole provider, regardless of how bad and expensive they are.

The problem now is that we live in a globalized world. If America wants to continue to be the leader in many industries they really need these large companies. It would be best for the world if they were broken up, but maybe not for the country. Now if there was some sort of global anti-trust law that could work in all countries that would be awesome, but we are nowhere near a world government like that.

We do, but the antitrust laws are no longer being enforced. - The DoJ tried to breakup IBM when IBM had over 60% market share. What happened? IBM stonewalled DoJ. Eventually DoJ gave up and the US Attorney General became IBM's chief council. - With the limit on corporation campaign contributions now erased, if an administration goes after a monopoly, the monopoly can fund the administration's opponents in retaliation. Senators will find ways to oppose the antitrust effort.

It is going to take more than anti-trust to fix the problems of the corporation. Monopolistic tendencies, irrevocably inherent to capitalism, and are but one aspect. Environmentalists have been fighting corporate pollution by regulation for over 40 years. Corporations are designed to externalize costs. What did we expect? We need to replace the corporation and corporate law entirely. The new principles are out there. New structures are in experimental stages. Reference Gar Alperovitz and his lists. So Bob, we need new LAW to govern the new structures. Can you grasp that? Or are we still blinkered with failure of imagination of the scale of the undertaking?

Hi Learn Socialist Justice, Hmmmmm, I thought "Liberal Progressive" was the New Word for "Socialism" Perhaps you are quibbling over theological fine points, the way the Medieval Scholastics would go to the mat over how many angels could fit on the tip of a pin. The Left has a tendency to subdivide down to grouping so small that it almost guarantees that the Left, as a whole, will remain Powerless. We need to look at how the Right plays their game. The Right is formed up of a Coalition that Contradicts itself every which way, but they recognize that the Most Important Factor is Strength in Numbers. The Left should worry about its own problem in regards to Popular Support and Strength in Numbers.

I think it’s wrong that only one company makes the game Monopoly. - Steven Wright "I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic. And yet I am not so opposed to capitalism that I have failed to see its relative merits. It started out with a noble and high motive, to block the trade monopolies of nobles, but like most human systems it falls victim to the very thing it was revolting against. So today capitalism has outlived its usefulness. It has brought about a system that takes necessities from the masses to give luxuries to the classes." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Letter to Coretta Scott, July 18, 1952 "Capitalism does not permit an even flow of economic resources. With this system, a small privileged few are rich beyond conscience, and almost all others are doomed to be poor at some level. That's the way the system works. And since we know that the system will not change the rules, we are going to have to change the system." - Martin Luther King, Jr., March 27, 1968 The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything. - Albert Einstein Participation - That's what's going to save the human race. - Pete Seeger

“Private capital tends to become concentrated in few hands, partly because of competition among the capitalists, and partly because technological development and the increasing division of labor encourage the formation of larger units of production at the expense of smaller ones. The result of these developments is an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society. This is true since the members of legislative bodies are selected by political parties, largely financed or otherwise influenced by private capitalists who, for all practical purposes, separate the electorate from the legislature. The consequence is that the representatives of the people do not in fact sufficiently protect the interests of the underprivileged sections of the population. Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights. ...I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.” ― Albert Einstein, Why Socialism?, Monthly Review, May 1949 Donald Trump: ‘We should have more people [immigrating to the U.S.] from places like Norway [a Democratic Socialist country with higher prosperity shared among all economic classes rather than concentrated in the hands of a small minority of the super wealthy].” “That Scandinavian life is famous for its sense of well-being. The UN’s World Happiness Report, in fact, now ranks Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden [countries with Democratic Socialist systems] at the top of their happiness list. By contrast, the US -- a country accustomed to being the best in the world at everything, except perhaps humility -- is in a period of happiness slippage, having wilted from third place to 19th in 10 short years. The stated reasons for that drop are “declining social support” and “increased corruption.” - Brent Giannotta, “What Americans Can Learn From Scandinavians, the Happiest People in the World,” Thrillist.com, January 2, 2018 "[The] trickle-down approach to economic policy [is] what an older and less elegant generation called the horse-and-Sparrow theory: If you feed the horse enough oats, some will pass through to the road for the sparrows. - John Kenneth Galbraith, Economist and advisor to President John F. Kennedy, 1961-1963 We've had trickle down economics in the country and most of us aren't even damp yet. - Molly Ivins "Crony capitalism is essentially a condition in which… public officials are giving favours to people in the private sector in payment of political favours.” It is prevalent in China and Russia, but had not been common in the US or the UK. "I am beginning to worry that we are starting in that direction." - Alan Greenspan, Former US Federal Reserve Chairman "Peak 'crony capitalism' - Donald Trump indulging in corrupt favoritism isn’t surprising - but so much of it so soon?! … Among the millions of people who will get screwed in this new crony-capitalism-on-steroids era are the majority of Trump’s voters, of course. Not just working-class voters in small Rust Belt towns that the media loves to fawn over as living in “Real America,” but also those making over $70,000 a year and living in the suburbs. Anyone, in other words, who is not a crony of Donald Trump. His supporters hoping otherwise will discover this soon enough." - Gary Legum, Salon, November 25, 2016 “Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone.” - John Maynard Keynes I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic. And yet I am not so opposed to capitalism that I have failed to see its relative merits. It started out with a noble and high motive, to block the trade monopolies of nobles, but like most human systems it falls victim to the very thing it was revolting against. So today capitalism has outlived its usefulness. It has brought about a system that takes necessities from the masses to give luxuries to the classes. - Martin Luther King, Jr. "A basic principle of modern state capitalism is that costs and risks are socialized to the extent possible, while profit is privatized." - Noam Chomsky "Capitalism: Nothing so mean could be right. Greed is the ugliest of the capital sins." - Edward Abbey “[T]he tattering of the American Dream is causing individuals who expected more out of life to self-destruct in record numbers. In my mind, there is a connection between the skyrocketing suicides, drug addiction, and binge drinking we’re seeing across the country and the fact that Americans are struggling so much financially. As the divide between the 'haves' and 'have nots' grows ever wider, one could assume that 99% of the population feel that overcoming economic inequality is insurmountable. Many Americans are hopeless and resigned to the fact that they may never live the American Dream or become part of the 1%. - Christopher Bergland, Psychology Today, May 6, 2016

Hierarchies are fine provided they're fair. The problem with today is that businesses unduly influence politics which in turn gets them to ignore or modify laws in their faovour. If lobbyists and PACs were not allowed to exist the political landscape would be much different.

theres so much in this comment and so much I dont really support so I'll just speak of "scandinavia" as mentioned here. or rather it mentions finland and iceland as well so it's the nordics. anyway not any of these mentioned are socialist. this is very apparent as there exists private property and the workers do not own the means of production. theres also the fact that several top swedish and danish politicians have already outright denied being socialist some years ago when bernie was kind of relevant.. several US or other "international" monopolies have enroached into these countries and are dominating as well. however the well being is generally good enough that it doesnt really matter too much to an average citizen as the standard of living is relatively high. are we to believe that its the country that makes the people and not the other way around? example: Danish prime minister trying to clear up to Sanders www.thelocal.dk/20151101/danish-pm-in-us-denmark-is-not-socialist

I don't think most people realize the where they choose to spend their money can be a huge force for social change.

"A problem you don't hear of"??? Man, when I was 16 I already realized that there is something rotten in the US and it was clear to me that you fell pray to the beast that unregulated liberal capitalism is. Now I am 36. Poor United States :(

For the sake of those who need to hear this message, we need more comments and more interaction with videos like this: we can take RU-vid's interaction-based algorithm and use it to our advantage to spread these ideas further on the RU-vid platform! This type of education NEEDS to be heard. The more we know, the better we can be at being involved in local government and work together to fix this problem of hyper-monopolies.
