Hey, OP from the Reddit post here. I actually was planning to make an updated Iceberg a year or so back, but I never got around to it lol. For those of you wondering, the "White Fatalis Kills the Player" entry comes from G-Rank White Fatty in MHF's Hunting Road. Also, the upright tree dragon is based off of old concept art for what I think is Gravios, you can find it and the Pale Tree Forest in the "Monster Concepts" part of the wiki. P.S. Oh, I know the White Fatalis one! In Frontier Z, there is a special White Fatalis which has a special attack where if you get hit, instead of fainting normally, you just disappear.

I like the Dark Souls vibe of the Ancient Civilization, it fits with the story because the entire reason humans still exist is because the survivors of the Dragon War changed to adapt & preserve nature instead of violating it.

19:27 I think it refers to frontiers G-rank white fatalis from the hunting road gamemode, basically if you get hit by 1 of his laser beams and it 1 shots you, instead of carting the normal way your character gets obliterated into nothingness

It's worth noting that just because Shara isn't specifically coded to look at the player doesnt mean it's not an intentional design decision. No other monster has eyes modeled to be concave like Shara does. Plus, imagine the nightmare of trying to code a Shara to be able to simultaneously stare at every single player in a 4 player quest. Gamedev is all about using shortcuts, and using optical illusions to achieve an effect that would be painful to code sounds like the perfect shortcut.

Safijiva is cannoncially the rival and counter part to Fatalis. This is why he is listed as the red dragon. The devs released this note in a recent ecology book so it wasnt on this iceberg. But i take offense thinking safi cant take on alateron

Tri also had the underwater ruins, with the underwater dragonator, which was pretty cool, and it kinda reminds me of the myths about Atlantis!

I've never heard of the Huntsman theory before this but I'm inclined to believe it; I'm pretty new to the MH series (I've only played a bit of Tri Ultimate, all of Rise and Sunbreak, and still going through Iceborne) but I always saw the Huntsman as a representation of hunters players played as in past games. Talking to him makes him seem like an old school hunter from previous games witnessing a new generation or hunters arise and being proud of it, and one that even brings you guidance with the knowledge his adventures have granted him over the years. It's a sweet thought, and I like grandpa Huntsman for that :)

In the first couple of minutes you talk about the leviathans and the skeleton issue the ligiacras had. If you look at the monsters in world, you'll notice that all of them have feet, or don't lay flat on the ground aside from Fatalis, which uses the leviathan model on a completely flat terrain. The issue for the skeleton is that when the monster is on a slight incline they will dip one end of their model into the ground, and for the leviathan that's a LARGE part of their bodies. To fix this, they just didn't add them because making the models bend was too much for them that early into the project. Hopefully someone will have gotten the model functioning for Wilds because Rise took the same approach that they used for Fatalis but just did it for the entire game of Rise, making every arena as flat or without as many changes in elevation, as if everything was made for 18 wheelers to drive around on without fear of getting stuck. That was the skeleton issue, it just kept clipping into the floor.

nice vid but i want to add a few things which i personally find intriguing: 10:25 because the White ones have many albino traits such as pale skin, lacking pigment, easilly getting damaged by sunlight,...However, those traits force them to migrate to snowy regions where they can thrive while the Red ones can not. Moreover, the caves in Old World are either damp caves or crystallize caves so a big White thing doesn't stand out much unlike a Red one. These are the reasons why people theorized that the Red Khezu are the original species getting outcompeted by their Subspecies version 28:56 Gaia Dragon isn't its real name, only a few individuals being so ancient that the Guild gave them a different name to separate them from their original species being Earth Dragon (like how Rare Species are premium Subspecies) to highlight their strength and rarity. On the other hand, the species juvenile form is called Ground Dragon. They also have the ability to fly but soon lose it as the creatures get older 35:51 i think i saw this being mentioned more than 16 years ago, way back when the first few monster hunter games were released. People posted about all types of make up bs monsters back then to scare the newbies and to add more mysteries into the games but this stood out the most for me. An old concept about an Elder Dragon that's supposed to be removed from the game but people somehow still saw it

Due to the existance of that bigass fatalis GS in pokke village I imagine there is at least one canon defeat of a fatalis. That's where the origin of fatalis growing back from a single scale comes from after all, as the GS itself grows back into its full shape after being mined.

The Attack on Titan Deviljho if I recall correctly was from Monster Hunter Frontier and the collaboration also gave you Eren and Mikasa armor with the weapons of the anime being tonfas (didn't play Frontier, just heard from it from videos documenting every collaboration in the franchise)

Apparently, I read it somewhere, the Rathian Hunter from MHFU chose to switch to a long sword due to his old age. Since the two almost feels the same to weild but the latter is lighter makes it convenient for him. In MHW he did say he's getting old for hunting

that elder dragon revival thing might refer to Ruiner Nergigante, who gets killed before the Shara fight but comes back to finish it off - meaning it either played dead and allowed itself to be carved, or the more likely option which is that its insane regeneration factor allows it to come back from actual death

Even though it was a fleeting reference, I like that you mentioned Stories when talking about fighting another player’s monster. I know it’s a side game, and is very over looked by many parts of the monster Hunter community as a whole, but i think it’s a great game. Baby’s first monster hunt, that doesn’t prepare them for the real thing…but still an amazing play

Don't forget Capcom confirmed little tidbits of lore like rajang chasing down kirin hirns to power up his lighting. And Iceborne fatalis's pin move nodding to the idea that molten gear of previous hunters fused to his chest.

I think the theory about elder dragons having the ability to revive themselves came from iceborne when it seems like nergigante and shara died but they got back up.

I’m not sure if I’m right about this but the upright tree dragon is an old monster hunter 1 concept like the crypt hydra. There’s an old picture of a hunter looking up at a dragon sitting on a spiked white tree. It looks like a cross between malzeno and malfestio with a rathalos tail.

19:37 that's reefers to one weird interactions with the zenith white fatalis or HR white fatalis in MH frontier, I don't exactly remember which one, but it does this attack where red beems of light shower from the skies, if one hits you your hunter gets vaporized, being shot means an insta failed mission even if you have 3 carts left. Something similar happens with the berserker laviente, it does one attack that if it hits you with a water geiser the laviente eats you a whole, one player eaten means an immediate quest fail. In resume, just MH frontier over the top shenanigans

I actually got my father to import portable 3rd at release back then, but i couldnt speek japanese, so my friend and i (at the age of 13) had to predict every item and component haha. Was kind of fun, but we still went back to mhfu

the kut ku + rathian = garuga isnt actually a fan theory, its stated in game in one of the quest descriptions, granted its framed in such a way that gives off the impression that (in universe) the guy writing the description is hitting you with an in game myth about garugas origins and that its not ACTUALLY a kut ku + rathian.

on the topic of serpentine wyverns, they fixed them with mizutsune and almudron by strictly limiting them on flat surfaces which simplifies the physics needed to animate them correctly, however it is very much not applicable to world because seeing a large flat surface like that in world will look terribly ugly, go fight lavasioth on his special corner and see how awkward the area with 3 holes because of how flat it is and go fight jyura on the furthest swamp area and notice that the whole area he is swimming on is not flat so the area feels 'natural'

i always thought shara was one of the 5. specifically the one that "looked up to the ky and created the mountains". which made sense to me

missing the rotting vale beeing a giant dalamadur corpse which is even visible on the map itself and that the hunters guild etc builds big villages etc near alatreon nests and dissuades hunters from hunting or even knowing about them on purpose (which is the actual reason they destroyed all information on it) since alatreon is not really interested in hunting humans and is a great natural deterrent against potential other dangers such as elderdragons.

One thing to add about the whole muslim prayer thing: The vocal sample pretty much just made its way into a sound bank, and that sound bank is then lisenced out to several companies/composers. Sounds designers or composers at those companies, namely Nintendo and Capcom in this case, would then of course not get the context of such a prayer-song, and just put it into the project they're working on because it sounds cool.

The Hellfire Jagras reminded me how fun mods were in World before Iceborne released. Was much hornier back then so mainly used it for the skimpier/nude versions of armor sets, but was also fun to fight Thomas the Train Engine as Nergigante.

See, I don't think Elder Dragons can revive. I just don't think anything really dies in Monster Hunter. They just get carted and fail their monster quest. Sure, you carve them, but they crush you to death and you still come back. And before anyone asks, it's the endemic life carrying them back to secret monster camps. It's a flawless theory.

Maybe, the admiral or one of his ancestor have been genetically modified with a little bit of rajang dna (this could explain why he is this strong). I was just thinking of Navirou, from mh stories, even through he is a felyne (a monster) he has been genically modified with an another monster dna (with a zinogre if i remember correctly) 🤔🤔

Some of the ones I know: - Deviljho eats it's tail. A classic one, we thought it was real and it wasn't. It was most likely a joke where people would put meat under his tail to create this illusion. - I think the segment about obscure weapons is missing the medium bowgun, it was only present in Tri... And I don't think it was very good. - Speaking of Tri, here's a more obscure one: there's a glitch where certain items (Like Rathian plate) can never be obtained by legitimate means. - Some collabs were mention, but MH has had some interesting japanese-only collabs with famous anime (One Piece, Evangelion, etc.), brands like Pizza Hut or Famitsu, and there was even a Hatsune Miku event in Frontier. - Inside a couple Monster Hunter games there are "forbidden weapons" that are way stronger than normal weapons and can't be obtained by normal means. These were most likely used by the developers as a sort of testing tool. There are a lot of secrets and easter eggs in these games and these are some I remembered from watching this video lol.

Everything related to the Ancient Civilization makes you wonder what tools and weapons did they have to go on par with Elder Dragons all the time.

I believe the upright tree dragon might refer to the gigantic ancient tree in the middle of the ancient forest which you go inside. Its crazy I once thought about this thats how I l knew what it meant

So, if all Fatalis hunts before the World one didn't actually happen. What about that giant sword in Pokke village? It's a Fatalis greatsword and belonged to an ancestor of the village chief from what I recall. So, at least one of them must have had been hunted and killed before. Also, while you need to kill multiple monsters for a full armor set and weapons, that's only due to you being given hand selected rewards by the guild. The corpse of or a captured monster will yield more than enough materials for even multiple sets.

Slight corrections on the ancient civilization the current lore community theorizes there are actually multiple ancient civilizations ranging from the more religion based cultures in the flooded forest and jungle maps to the cultures based around the tower and the cloud viewing district( I think that was the name of that map)

I firmly believe that the Huntsman is from MHFU. He probably uses a longsword now because his old bones can't use a greatsword effectively. Age is a bitch and that old badas is probably still hunting in his 60's.

With Legiacruz in World. It's understandable. Something we can see with both IceWorld and SunRise, is that the maps and more importantantly, the specific numbered areas, is how they are designed. Where Sunrise is a more Vertical game, being able to climb walls and mountains and wirebugging around, All the Areas that we fight in are INCREDIBLY flat. They are for a lack of a better word...arenas. All of them. Maybe 2-3 area on a map may have a ledge, or you can drag the monster towards a wall, but standardly, they are ALL flat arenas. Especially if you compare to world, where they are labled areas, but are not all that different from the routes, they have a certain degree of incline and decline all over the place. This was to assist with the revamped combat World was going for so you could take advantage of half the skill set. Could Legiacruz been in Sunrise? As modders have proven...yes. in the same way Almudron and Mitsusune work. Even scaled up as SunRise does often. In world? Aparently it would require an exceptional amount of programming, remodeling and additional modal work so that it doesn't constantly clip into the world. Aparently, as I am not a modder so I personally cant say, They would need to add SEVERAL more joints in the Legiacruz modal to be able to adjust to terrain dips, all of those joints requiring further animation adjustments for the whole modal for the things it would be interacting with....JUST for that one monster, which was not a flag ship, or an end game monster. So the truth of the matter was that it just required too much time and work just to add a single monster in. We can also see from the roster of World, they purposely avoided anything serpentine, or lengthy and low to the ground to avoid the problem with clipping into the ground constantly. Some of the largest monsters Dont have a lot of contact points with the ground. 2 examples come to mind in an argument against this point: Kulve Toroth, and Fatalis. However, people should see how this only exagerates my point. 1: They both have their own specific quest and are not found in any other places 2: They have their own unique maps. Fatalis literally being an Arena, and Kulve specifically moves in a VERY specific way and certain areas until she is no longer a long serpintine shape (break armor) only than does Kulve move more like a regular monster. 3: They are both End game major monster hunts. Unlike Legiacruz

I'm pretty sure the field team leader stated that his master, the huntsman, used to be a greatsword user. He switched to the longsword later in his life as his strength waned and had to rely on grace instead.

I think the Frontier series being the ancient civilization is pretty interesting on the surface, because a society which genocides monsters, so much so that the monsters would then have to fight back in the form of Fatalis wouldn't truly be able to recognize or admit in the first place when they've been hurt in retaliation and that's because a people must first dehumanize themselves to an extent before they're able to dehumanize others- and that concept applies to the nature around oneself as well. If they themselves didn't see their atrocities to nature as wrong or hurtful because they had dehumanized nature, (as modern people do today in many different facets) they would not be able to recognize the pain they had brought on to themselves as a result of their actions. And since genocides don't happen in snaps, but in slow trickles, I imagine fatalis must have had skirmishes, guerilla warfare style- destroying key pieces of hunter architecture. The dissemination of this information was likely subject to political bias by the hunter society themselves, and of course, what is liberation for the oppressed feels like genocide for the oppressor- thus the information around this event was made to sound like a few grand moments, a few snaps, rather than the drawn out trickle we see in Frontier. As war, which is what the ancient civilization raised against nature, is realistically not one big snap, but a drawn out trickle of battles and skirmishes. Which is why we think of Fatalis as this horrid creature, this killer of man. But it's of our own creation, a constant reminder of that societies hubris and barbarism. I say this to stress that Fatalis was justified in it's attack, killing and fragmenting of humanity. This is because colonialism is within itself a violent series of actions and to decolonize and free oneself is inherently violent and requiring of violence. And I found it quite scary when we canonically took it down. If it were to never regenerate, there would be no true check for humanity and we would eventually destroy ourselves from the capitalism within our society- of which acts as a multi-layered parasite which destroys everything and everyone around it. Keep in mind, hunter society does not exist in a vacuum and their main purpose of existing within normal society is to get parts for people living in the normal world to ultilize in their day to day lives. And if these people in that normal world have a world like ours, they're likely capitalistic in nature and require infinite growth in a finite world. Thus necessitating that the hunters hunt. This could also explain why you can only get three carves on a kill, the rest may be shipped off to be sold to the highest bidder or sold to a company to make a profit. And this is how genocide happens. Like in the real world, genocides are and were carried out by companies. In the partitioning of Africa for example, the East India Company relied on trafficking slaves for labor to turn a profit- so to in the monster hunter world would companies profit from the use and sale of monsters and monster parts. Likely, the ancient civilization's ideals never truly left the current peoples, as is in our modern world where we still enslave prisoners for example, they- even though they may say they have learned their lesson and respect nature more as hunters, they may still serve the same purpose they did in their previous society. Which is ultimately genocide. It may be at smaller scale, but eventually as needs become higher and higher in the outer world to sustain their capitalistic way of life, more and more pressure would eventually be put onto hunters and they'd have to expand and expand. This is another parallel we see in real life, as the cobalt which is used in our phones and electronics in the Western world are mostly harvested from the Congo in Africa- of which, there is a genocide happening in there too, to harvest the resources from the people's land. Which I think is in part why they're in the new world in the first place- they need to keep expanding and colonizing to keep feeding their world's capitalist machine. I think it goes even deeper with their characterization in the Stories series and what that says about their society and also their role in nature and the possible propaganda put out around it. But that would make this comment even longer lol. For now, what do you guys think?

Shara Ishvalda DOES look at the player, why be so pedantic about whether it has a seperate eye model tracking the camera, or if it's just a really clever optical illusion? All animation is an optical illusion anyway, the way they executed it doesn't mean it isn't.

31:34 Fun fact, there is actually one slaying of a Fatalis that slightly predates that of Iceborne Fatalis, though it isn't quite done by a player hunter. Back in January/February 2020, Monster Hunter did a collab with the Nintendo and Cygames produced gacha game, "Dragalia Lost". It was primarily a GenU crossover, as it featured the Soaratorium being sent to the world of Dragalia Lost as well as Dreadking Rathalos being one of the summonable dragons from the event. Notably though, Fatalis was chosen as the raid boss for the event, and the event's story ends with Fatalis being killed by a dragonator from the Soaratorium after being weakened by the main characters of Dragalia Lost. There are some other shenanigans going on, but this is technically a slaying of Fatalis outside of legend that does predate Iceborne Title Update 5 by a good few months.
