Die Monster, Die Honorable mentions: Night of the Demon (U.S. title Curse of the Demon) I, Monster City of the Dead (aka Horror Hotel) Burn, Witch, Burn Tomb of Ligeia First Man Into Space (a b-movie, but it was the first horror film I was permitted to see (age 7...gave me nightmares for a week) I went out to a list of British horror movies to refresh myself. They had Murder By Decree listed, but I don't know if I can call it a horror movie even though there some horrific scenes in the movie. It was Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper. I look upon it more as a Sherlock Holmes picture, but if it counted it would have placed #2 on my list.

Night of the Demon...absolute class movie, brilliant dialogue, especially Carswell’s lines and insights into witchcraft. The innocents and The Wicker Man (and soundtrack) are also among my most treasured films..top picks. Hi Pete, I usually watch your channel when eating dinner in front of my TV. I am just starting to get involved with commenting on the computer. I have a question that has been eating at me for about a year. What is that horror picture/poster in the top right of your screen? Brings back a memory that I just cannot seem to remember. Similar to album artwork, I always love checking out movie/book artwork and I hate when they change it for DVD's. Also, how about a horror movie poster show?

@@seaoftranquilityprog Awesome! Thanks. I wonder who the artist was. I have this horror comic book anthology from grade school called "Creepy" that has this Dracula fighting the Wolfman picture on the cover that always gave me nightmares, but I spent hours staring at it. There was no story inside the book to go with it so it stretched the imagination. Anyway, your print (from my angle) reminds me of that cover art, combined with the 70's King Kong movie poster (which always freaked me out and made me afraid of heights). Here is a link to that book cover art that I am talking about. That artists name was Frank Frazetta. The character Donald Pleasence plays on Raw Meat, aka Death Line from '72 looks like a parody of a clumsy, drunk Samuel Loomis, yet still a creepy film with an original story. Dark Places from '73 also cool, that scene of the window with the light on seen from the distance is very effective.

My five favourites 1. *'The Wicker Man'* - I like horror films when one has the idea that they could be based in reality. I love the pagan background to the film and its extraordinary finale. By the way, Britt Ekland had an arse double for her nude scene in the film. I wouldn't have thought she'd have needed one... 2. *'The Abominable Dr. Phibes'* - So strange, so original, so brilliant. Vincent Price is astounding in this wonderful film. 3. *'The Blood on Satan's Claw'* - Really atmospheric and well made. A big plus point is the presence of the delectable Linda Hayden. 4. *'Witchfinder General'* - Very well made and full of drama. Really enjoyed this film. 5. *'Penda's Fen'* - A film originally made for television, it was described by a critic as 'a lasting vision of heresy and pastoral horror'. It is bizarre, complex, allegorical and I'm not sure I understood even a half of it. But it's a wonderful work of art and well worth seeing.

The screenplay for the Land That Time Forgot was co-written by one of my all-time favorite authors; Michael Moorcock. Moorcock was not only an accomplished author of fantasy and sci-fi fiction, but he also worked with both Hawkwind, and Blue Oyster Cult. Plus, one of his most famous creations was the character of Elric of Melnibone. If Elric is not a household name to you (in my case, I have 3 cats, 1 of them is named Elric), you may be at least familiar with the image of the character, especially if you are a fan of Cirith Ungol; he's the pale warrior on all of their album covers. As far as Witchfinder General goes; that is probably Vincent Price's greatest performance ever. And, if you were ever curious about the American title of the Conqueror Worm. It happened because the movie was distributed by AIP stateside and they had had a great deal of success with their Edgar Poe films featuring Vincent Price, so they had intercut a reading by Price of the Poe penned poem the Conqueror Worm into the movie, just so they could sell it as another Poe movie in America.

Dan is wrong about that being the best version of The Wicker Man. The UK bluray version has the theatrical cut, the Director's Cut he's referring to and the more recent "Final Cut" which Hardy said was the last word on the film. That's the one to get.

I love the anthologies, but I’ll limit it to one-probably the greatest one of all. 1. The Haunting (Legend of Hell House is a great knockoff too) 2. The Innocents 3. Dead of Night 4. Satan’s Slave 5. The Skull 6. Night of Big Heat (it’s Lee & Cushing, gotta go with an odd ball) 7. And Now the Screaming Starts (Amicus)

On 1973's "The Wicker Man"-- as my username says, I am a Christian (but I *don't* push my faith onto people who don't want to hear about it, and I like a lot of music and movies that many Christians are *terrified* by, lol!), and I must agree: TWM is one of the most *utterly chilling* movies I've ever seen. The police investigator had his flaws... I didn't always agree with him... but man... what an ending! It still haunts me!

His utter despair at the end is so devastating. He realizes that in this place the last 2000 years of civilization basically never happened. It's not talked about much but I liked how the cop put a curse upon Christopher Lee's character at the end.
@christianman73
@christianman73 3 года назад
@@NaughtyVampireGod Wow-- actually, until now, that you mentioned it, I don't think that I *ever even noticed* that part about the cop and the curse that he pronounces! I'm going to have to go back and watch the ending again! Your point about his despair is a good and profound one. I just ordered the Blu-ray (of the original, of course, *not* the unintentionally hilarious remake, lol!), and I can't wait to revisit this classic!

The anthologies are all a little hokey these days - virtually all the individual stories were minor variations on what had gone before, were cheesy in the first place and/or have been rebooted endlessly but The Wicker Man, Blood on Satan's Claw and Witchfinder General still stand up well today. The Dr. Phibes films may not be horror classics but remain great fun.

Nice to see The Innocents mentioned in the comments section it's a wonderful film. Someone also mentioned Death Line (now available on Blu Ray) which I recall seeing on late night TV many moons ago it's a good little film set in the tunnels of the London Underground and Donald Pleasance is excellent as always. Chris would really like Virgin Witch (1970). Horror Express is 50% British as it was a co-production with a Spanish film company but deserves an honorable mention. Pete how about a show on Horror 'shorts' there are quite a few decent ones out there. One I really like is Return To Glennascaul a ghost story shot in Ireland in 1951 which starts Orson Welles. It's 23 mins long, very atmospheric and I think won an Oscar for best short.
