The Montane Winter Spine Race 2023 enters day six. As the podiums fill in the Montane Winter Spine Challenger North and the Montane Winter Spine Race, we also crown our 1st placed woman. Claire Bannwarth from France put the whole of Northumberland National Park between her and the competition before she touched the wall in Kirk Yetholm, finishing 5th overall . A fascinating battle begins for 2nd and 3rd woman between Hannah Rickman and Edwina Sutton. While both rest at Bellingham, all eyes were on who would make the first move towards the Cheviots. It was Hannah. With many ultra runners still out on the Pennine Way, the clock still ticks, athletes at the back will need to push with everything they have just to stay in the race.
For those that are following for the first time, all Montane Spine ultra marathon races follow the Pennine Way.
The Sprint race is 46 miles and needs to be completed within 18 hours.
The Challenger South and the MRT Challenge cover a distance of 108 miles with a time of limit of 60 hours.
The Challenger North is 160 miles with a cut off time of 108 hours.
The Montane Spine Race is 238 miles and with a 168 hour total time limit.
This series of short films are forming a truly inspiring ultra running documentary. That is owed to the inspirational ultra runners who are testing themselves well beyond what they thought humanly possible.
