One night back in the late 1980s there was a huge brush fire close to where I lived in Winters, California. I was coming home from church, and noticed that the reddish full Moon was hanging seemingly all by itself in the sky; there was so much smoke in the air that none of the stars or planets were visible. It was one of the eeriest sights I've ever seen in many years of amateur astronomy.

Where I live, a small suburb outside Seattle, there are few if any actual stars visible at night. Just the moon, planets and sometimes satellites. I swear there were more stars visible in Southern california in the 70’s than there are now in the PNW. I’ve seen the sky from the sierras and the high desert, so the sky here is apocalyptic by comparison.

If I've calculated correctly, in the 250,000 years that Homo sapiens or our nearest forebears have existed, the moon has moved about 9.5 KM further away from earth. That's not even noticeable from our standpoint. The sun will go Red Giant and engulf the entire solar system before the moon moves far enough away for it to really matter. I have to give credit to the script writer. Phrases like "the greatest astronomer name-checked in a Queen song" and "planet-wide dong-measuring contest known as the space race" aren't easy to come by.

Wonderful video! I admit I am Extremely Excited about this renewed interest in moon exploration and building habitats. It's such an enormous springboard for our transition from planet-bound creatures to space-faring beings. I grew up with a lot of sci fi stories just kind of "around" - not just having books by authors like Heinlein and Clarke, but my parents and their friends frequently discussed those books and the ideas that underpinned them. Imagining what it might take to get there, what it might be like living on the surface of another world. Burroughs' Barsoom novels, and Kim Stanley Robinson's Blue Mars, were big favorites with all the grownups too, and I would listen in complete fascination as they debated whether a Moon base was really required before a Mars colony or not. I was too little to understand most of the math, and definitely too young to understand the political and social stuff - but I was fascinated nonetheless. Even when I discovered other, much more fantastical stories involving humans in space (McCaffrey's Pern, and her Talent series, were a big deal for me), I never entirely forgot the older notions. Even contemplating that in MY lifetime, humans might have stations like those in Antarctica, but on the Moon's surface? Absolutely the most incredible thing that could happen. I wasn't even born yet, when Armstrong stepped onto the lunar regolith. To see people return - and stay - there just aren't words to describe the way that prospect makes my heart swell.

Wrong. You probably haven't been to university. It is essential for social justice and social engineering to specifically put at least one woman and at least one person of color, ideally black, on the moon. Haven't you heard about intersectionality, and diversity inclusivity equity? The last thing the world needs is some white male doing something noteworthy by excluding others, history is already full of that. You need to acknowledge your unconscious bias and check your privilege. 😆 I swear, I have met people who say things like that... 😑🤢🤮

Just four years after the first moon landing, Britain sent some rabbits to the moon, followed by a couple of blokes to check out what happened. There followed the greatly hushed-up "Invasion of the Moon Creatures". Somehow, under a government alien protection program, Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor, and Graeme Garden became common or garden variety comedians.

Simon: "1.2 billion years BC." On such a timescale, does the extra two thousand years really make any difference? [] I'm old enough to remember the moon landings: what got me even then was that the astronauts were picked up by the rescue boat, taken aboard the ship, and THEN put into quarantine: if there'd been any lunar lurgy it had already had time to escape. [] How is the Chinese Rover sending back data if it's on the far side? unless there's an orbital component to pick up the signals and transmit them back to earth. [] The moon may have played a very significant role in the emergence of land-based life - apart from its stabilising influence. I don't how how much closer it would have been when life first crawled out of the ocean, but the tides it caused must have been tremendous, leaving tidal beaches where marine life could gradually adapt to a semi-dry environment before moving out of the tidal range and on to a fully land-based existence. Without the moon, would there have been land-based life on earth at all? I know there are solar tides, but would they have been strong enough to make a difference?
