Bruh why even years later, is everyone complaining about how a male is singing this? It takes a lot of talent to sing like that and honestly, the singers voice fits the song, regardless of his gender. Stop complaining and just enjoy the song, ya'll!
Who tf is complaining abt this!?! I love male versions of covers. If fpr no reason then i like imagining malw characters or what may be different voice or design etc. Not to mention HOLY SHIT HES SLAYING THIS!!?! HOW COULD ANYONE COMPLAIN???
+Emphenia♆ What used to be shunned or hidden away in fear of what would be said... This fandom brings out everypony and is welcomed to the end... No fears, no regrets... Just dreams and love... Friendship is truly magic.
+◎Emphenon◎ They only reflect the awesomeness of the show; so the real question would be: "Why are these songs based on an amazing show?" and the answer would likely be; why not?
Redundant, bastardized parodies and remixes of original artists' already perfect music seems to be the brony community's forte. No shade, obviously I'm a brony myself, but I feel like Dane's actual musicality and genius is so overlooked in the sea of derivatives of his art. The fact that the animation featuring she-who-must-not-be-named's ridiculously autotuned and lifeless version of this song has surpassed his original upload's viewcount and has allover gained much more traction than his and Kristen's original, subjectively superior versions cements this, and it's a shame. I almost wish he was less lenient about usage of his music and protected his IP more, even if I do admire the fact that he doesn't gatekeep his work.
@@MasqueradeRose For someone saying “no shade” you sure do have very strong feelings on the subject. Yeah, the animated version has more views than the original. But if the creator is fine with it then I don’t really see the problem?
@@bea7823 There's not really a problem with it, no, so long as Ponyphonic is fine with it, that's their prerogative. The animation is good, and I understand why a version with animated visuals will garner more attention and hype than one without. I just think their choice of singer for the project was a shame and I'm not fond of how overlooked Dane and Kristen's versions are in favor of starpower. I think you misunderstand my tone. My feelings on the matter aren't vitriolic, I'm just making an observation on what was at one point a longstanding trend in the Brony fandom (this most notably happened with Eurobeat's "Discord" as well, when TLT remixed it). Low-effort parodies and derivatives that rely on fandom gimmicks and big names seem to get more traction than their original and often superior counterparts, sometimes without much credit or fanfare for the original artist.
@@MasqueradeRose I would disagree on classifying the Discord remix as “low effort”, although I do agree it often misleads people into thinking it’s the original. But I feel like I’m missing some context. Did the other singer do something bad I’m unaware of? You’re talking like it’s more than just a vocal preference, with the whole “she-who-must-not-be-named” thing. Edit: Sorry, just a typo.
I still believe this version to be superior. Not to take anything from Kristen, but this version has so much more emotion. This song swells within you. This was perfect as it was. Any other version is but a pale imitation.
Now that Duocartoonist's incredible animation has released, I'm here to pay tribute to the original. Honestly I still think this is the best version; Ponyphonic just puts so much emotion into his songs, and his voice is truly phenomenal. His songs may be few and far between, but the quality surpasses every other musician in the fandom. From The Moon Rises, to Lullaby for a Princess, to Applejack (my favorite country song ever) to Walls, to my favorite song of all time Harmony Ascendant, Ponyphonic knocks it out of the park every time he composes. Utterly phenomenal work. Ponyphonic has well earned the honor of being my favorite brony musician. I cant wait to hear what he comes out with next.
This is my favorite version. His voice is really dramatic and regal. Idgaf if Luna is a girl and AHHH whatever, this is still one of the most hard-hitting Luna songs to date.
I find the difference between this version and EileMonty's cover truly astounding. By that I mean the singing voice somehow made the song style different. This version makes me think of a stage musical like les mis, but eilemonty's is a lot more like a Disney movie song. I think its mostly because this guy has a stage voice, eilemonty has a recording voice.
I like the female version, but this just has so much more emotion, and how to say it? Musicality. You're not just singing the notes, you're adding that little bit more that makes all the difference. Great job!!
To be honest, all the female covers I've heard of this sound too... sweet. This is Luna giving in. This is not a sweet and delicate song, and I find the deeper, richer voice suits it well. As for people saying "But its a dude singing for a chick!" need to stop gendering voices. It's perfect the way it is.
In other words, if it was sung by a woman, the more appropriate range would be a contralto (the darkest feminine voice range, covering E3 - F5). A low alto and a high tenor (highest natural male voice) can come really close in range so yeah, there should be some overlap between which songs are for women and which are for men.
To be honest, Ellie's cover was very well done... Not only does she sing beautifully, but she also knows how to act. The emotion in her cover hit me more than this version, which doesn't mean I don't like it! It's just that Ellie's is perfect in my opinion. But I can see where you're coming from, I also dislike most female covers of the song.
I think the idea is that it starts off sweet as Luna sings, until that is her anger around 'Should lock themselves away.' in which is starts to get lower as bitterness envelopes her heart. At "Why shouldn't they adore me.' I'm thinking her voice turns more richer as you suggest, she is basically giving in at these parts. So her sweet voice turning to more deeper tones would make sense.
*[Intro instrumental]:* *Luna walks out of the shadows of the treeline. She appears as she did in episode 2, but her cutie mark consists of only the Moon. Mimic Celestia walking out of the castle in the _Lullaby for a Princess_ animation as a minor nod to sisterly similarities. *Now the hour has come at last,* *This soft and fading light,* *Has crossed the west horizon* *And has bidden us goodnight.* *She stands atop a hill, the camera panning across the meadow before her. The full moon is visible in the sky. *And what a lovely night it is,* *To walk a moonlit field,* *Transition to Luna walking through the field of night-blooming flowers, a quiet smile upon her face. *And see the softer shades* *That are by starlight now revealed.* *Camera angles to a low vantage point, allowing for a clear view of the flowers and grass tinted blue under the moonlight, allowing for a shot of Luna lovingly caresses the moonflowers. She pauses as a look of pain flickers across her face. *So why is it that now,* *When all is quiet and at rest,* *Brief montage of particularly noisy, active, or dangerous diurnal animals heading to sleep. *When candles glow and all the world* *Is at its very best,* *She stands atop a cloud, gazing over a beautiful moonlit landscape. Moon has noticeably moved across the sky. *The ponies of Equestria* *Should lock themselves away,* *To shun the Moon and wait instead* *For Sister's sunny day?* *Her gaze shifts to an idyllic rustic village. The only ponies still outside turn away from the night and head in, doors locking and windows slamming shut as they look nervously into the dark. Camera pans back to show a still, unlit town. *_I N U M B R A L U N A E S T ._* *Luna looks into a pool of water, gazing at her own face. She takes off her crown to stare at it before sighing and taking flight. Her reflection stays a bit longer, it's eyes turning to slits as it turns to watch her leave. *Am I so wrong to wish that they* *Would see things like I do?* *Montage of still images in the style of WarpOut's _Lullaby for a Princess_ animation with ponies favoring and praising Celestia over Luna. More impressive gifts, larger crowds, more attention to their respective courts, and others. With each new picture the shadows over Luna grow darker. Include parts of scenery suggestive of Nightmare Moon or her eye, to represent her growing influence over Luna. *And am I so wrong to think* *That they might love me too?* *Montage continues. *Why shouldn't they adore me?* *Celestia sits on her throne, presiding over a large group of ponies. Cut to Luna sitting upon her's, the throne room dark and terribly empty. *Is it not within my right?* *I'll not be overshadowed,* *Mine is not the lesser light!* *Her face fills with rage as she leaves, tearing the doors from their hinges. A black blotch is visible around her cutie mark. The Moon visibly inches towards the horizon before coming to a complete stop. *I've waited long enough now* *For them all to come around,* *Camera cuts to directly in front of Luna, looking into her angry face. In the background, translucent images of the past flicker by, each firming her resolve. *And though the Sun may plead and threaten,* *The Moon will stand her ground!* *Luna storms into Celestia's room. We only see their shadows as they argue, until the larger one flies away. *And all will know the wonder* *Of my dark and jeweled sky!* *Luna stands on a castle balcony, looking over the kingdom with a determined visage. The Sun has begun to rise, but she does not move the Moon. The darkness around her cutie mark has increased in size, looking less like a natural part of her and more like a stain. Camera focuses on her blue mane as it starts to slowly wave from invisible winds, the speed increasing until at "jeweled sky" it erupts into a starry mane. At the very edge of the camera, the dark stain on her cutie mark slowly continues to spread. *As all the world is wrapped* *In an eternal lullaby!* *Cut to a distance view. The figure of Luna is vaguely visible, her eyes glowing white. The night radiates from her and slowly begins to fill the sky, flowing in an almost organic manner as it replaces the normal morning sky. *So say goodnight to this,* *The final setting of the Sun!* *Focus switches to the horizon. The Moon is far higher than before. Part of the spreading night stretches outwards, forming what resembles a claw that takes hold of the Sun and physically drags it down past the horizon. The camera leaves before we see it entirely disappear. Rather than normal animation, this section is a rapid sequence of stills to emphasize the unnaturalness of it. *Tomorrow dawns in darkness,* *Return to the castle. It is drawn in a vaguely more sinister way. Luna stands, closely resembling her current self, as shadows begin to edge in on her. Vague images of starring eyes are visible within. *The nighttime has begun!* *The shadows reach her. The black stain around her cutie mark spreads, being replaced with the light purple that surrounds Nightmare Moon's. Darkness spirals around her, keeping us from seeing as she transforms. *_N O C T E ._* *Nightmare Moon rears as lightning flashes across the night sky, visibly laughing. *[Closing chords]:* *Zoom in to NMM's face. Then to eye. Then on the last note, the eye becomes transparent, showing Luna as a child (her cutie mark as it currently is, not the purer thing that it once was) leaning on her hooves against the inside of the eye, looking out with horror as tears stream from her eyes. Her pupils dart around frantically as though begging for help.
I've heard people say that they get "chills" of "goosebumps" when hearing certain songs, and I didn't really know what that meant... until I heard this song. Good job
I actually thought I would end up liking a female cover better myself, since I usually lean more towards a girl singing from a girl's perspective, and the same for guys. But, I've heard many versions (including EileMonty's), and yet I still can't help but prefer this version above them. I just think his voice better suits this song and type of music. He puts more emotion into it, with out having to be over the top or dragging out certain parts that I've heard many of the female covers try to do. I think the one that came the closest was the German cover by Beispielmusik.
(can't seem to post on the main thread, so I'll respond to this... sorta) Wow, this is pretty dang good as well (coming from the Lullaby for a Princess crowd). I am particularly pleased to hear a good male singer behind it; gives a guy like me confidence. : ) I particularly like the nice creeping-in organ/choir effects, and the deliberate salting of Latin-ate phrases. Beautiful. I, too, generally prefer a song in it's original(ly gendered) voice, but this was pretty dang good.
Seven Years. Seven Years, and this is still the song that I think is the most emotional that I have ever heard from this fandom. You can feel it if you let yourself. You can feel the emotion of this song right inside your chest, you can hear him pushing it beautifully into the words like few other have ever done. After so many years, this version of the song is the best. This is one of the songs that you can't forget the lyrics to over time. It's got a place in my heart. I raise a toast, to the great times had with this song, and to better times ahead, for all of us.
All the versions of this song are excellent, and both Kristen and EileMonty do amazing jobs with it... but this one will always be closest to my heart as it was one of the first I heard on joining the fandom in spring 2012. The male voice honestly doesn't bother me at all -- and yes, this would be my Desert Island The Moon Rises. If you see what I mean!
Wow, this is absolutely incredible. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I think this belongs on Broadway. I can totally picture the struggle between Celestia and Luna being a musical all its own, kind of like "Wicked." And this song would be Luna's theme or something like that. Anyway, I'm rambling now...excellent work!
=D We must have a pony Broadway musical production parody. But, then again, if even Hasbro can't make show-accurate plushies, how are we supposed to make good costumes?
can i just say how absolutely GENIUS this song is?? all of your music in fact, tells such a complete and tangible story in every lyric and note i just cant get over 00:40 when he asks "why," there's those very very subtle drums in the background that indicate a brewing rage it's just so... i can't even, it's just so amazing! even though most listeners might not catch it, they could feel the emotion that's being conveyed
I am in choir, my choir teacher is really picky, and when I say picky I mean like extremely, he would not have one bad thing to say about this, not the diction, dynamics, lyrics, or anything. And no I am not trying to brag ,at all, but he is pretty much the best. As in he cares about how the music sounds, not like a second grader trying to teach someone how to paint but like an adult who wants the picture to look right.
I hate when people make another version of song with different vocals and it get 4 million more views and the original gets lost and then people complain how the original song's vocals are bad and the new one is much better. These vocals are so much better! I tried getting people to link this video when people were reacting to the animation but I was lost in the comments and only the animation was linked in a lot of the videos, I sorry.
I just have to come back to this from time to time, despite it being a male voice, just nothing can beat the original, the female covers are very good but they just don't do this amazing song justice, the emotion and power in this just give me shivers
I just have to say, I have loved this song for a while. One of my favorite parts is "So say goodnight at this, the final setting of the sun! Tomorrow dawns in darkness, the nighttime has begun!" Just the words alone give me chills. You, sir, know how to write an evil villain! *applauds*
i wish this version had the “it comes to this at last i will no longer yield the sky, if that cannot love but one princess alone. See the moon is rising she has come to claim the heavens for her own!” love that part
Dear PonyPhonic, I just wanted to say that this is one of my favorite of your songs! Also, using the one of the instrumental versions, I recently sang this in front of my Advanced Choir class. They seemed to really enjoy it, almost as much as I did singing it. Thank you for bringing us your wonderful music! PS: I gave you guys credit for making the song and stuff. :)
More than 7 years later, and it still gives me goosebumps. Espcially the final verse where you can just feel Luna going from legitimate upset to transformating into Nightmare Moon.
I love both versions of this song, Ponyphonic's and Kristen's. They both convey a bit more emotion at different points, but they're both Luna descending into her hatred and bitter anger, and I think they're both beautiful. This is amazing guys.
I think the original being sung by a male is perfect, his voice is beautiful and it fits Luna in a lot of ways. This is my favorite version of this lovely song!
Ponyphonic, I just want to say, you are one of the most amazing composers in the world. I will never live up to your greatness as the simple singer songwriter I am.
The extended version is new! I posted this song years ago and only recently added a new section that I felt was really needed. More info on that soonish...
Such strength in the vocals. Still get shivers everytime I hear it, as Luna's words paint a very vivid picture of what's going on and her own emotional state. Love it more every time.
2:00 my favorite part it almost should like its swung but does not sound jazzlike its so beautiful. Don't get me wrong I like Elie Monte but this is so much better.
How did I have no idea this existed and was the original!? This is so much better! No offense to the lady who sung the one in that animation, she sounded pretty, but her inflections were kind of off and it always bothered me. (For example: When she says "See things like I do" it doesn't flow well with the rest of the song.) Not only that, I can also clearly relate to the male voice SOOOO much better.
So this is the original of the moon also rises song...its really good! His voice is soft and strong. Now I want to hear what the female and male versions would sound like together!
@katedrawsrandomthings had? I never changed my feelings about the franchise. I just don't have enough time to enjoy all my favorites. Nobody does. Just gotta make due with the time we have. It's finite. I'd recommend you not waste yours.
this is the kind of shit I wish people would think of when they hear 'brony'. not fucking rule thirty four and guys playing with plastic horsies. Its truly amazing that people could make stuff so epic out of something so "fucking gay bruh".
Ean Haworth Actually the show is not shit. It's sweet and can help you relax. You can have a laugh at Pinkie Pie, or want some of Rarity's dresses to come in human form. You can sit back and enjoy the easygoing contest between Rainbow Dash and Applejack. You can cheer on Twilight or have so fun with Discord. It's not shit. Just because YOU don't like it does NOT mean it's shit.
I like this key! It gives me chills and the vocals are amazing. I think both versions both have their own majesty and are both amazing to listen for different reasons.
I want to say, good job ponyphonic, you've come a long ways, and have done very well for yourself. This was a powerful piece you have created and I think it speaks volumes of your continued growth, please, keep up the amazing work.
Um, Here's the Celestia Ver. I came up with.. Now the hour has come at last The bright and joyous light Rising in the eastern skies To mark the day has begun And what a lovely day it is To walk a sunkissed beach To see the cheerful shades That are by sunlight now revealed So why is it that now When all is bright and full of life When flowers bloom and all the world is at its very best The bronies and pegasisters Care very little Luna is the one they want, And leave me here alone. Am I so wrong to wish that they would love me like Luna? And am I so wrong to think that I am just as good? Why shouldn't they adore me? Is it not within my right? I am not a troll or tyrant, Nor am I stalking Twilight! I've waited long enough now For them all to realize Oh, the moon may have more lovers But the sun shall stand her ground And all will know the wonder Of my bright and joyous day When all the world is wrapped in An eternal march of joy So say goodbye At this the final setting of the moon Tomorrow ends in Sunlight, The daytime has begun! Sry if it's bad :/
Some might not like it...but your voice is very lovely...and I quite enjoy your vocal range. It's very emotional...and I think it was perfectly fine for the voice.
Oh man, the chills at that last line! If only we could get Luna to actually sing this. If Hasbro ever makes a prequel that portrays Luna's fall, then I hope they use this song (or some derivation of it) in the show itself. The lyrics are perfect!
