In-depth discussion of the Moore, OK, EF5 tornado of May 20, 2013. We'll discuss the meteorology behind the event before diving into some of the unique behaviors of the parent supercell and the Moore tornado, including how storm mergers and resultant descending reflectivity cores impacted mesocyclone and tornado intensity, debris ejections, and more. We'll also discuss why this storm was able to produce a violent tornado despite a background environment that seemed unsupportive of such activity.
