Moose-a-zon www.amazon.com/shop/moosescra... The first ever Moose show highlights some of 2016's successes and failures, learning experiences, removing silver plate, and a couple other odds and ends. January 2017
Use a thrift store stainless stock pot for your neg electrode, dangle your plateware from a plastic or wood spoon across the top from a wire hooked to positive, and your plate stripping will proceed faster (greater collector area)
moose, on the big items I actually use a 5 gal bucket, just make sure you use a bigger item on your negative side. I've had to bend platters to fit. I've got 2 quart jars of powder.
Your follow up was solid, and you and your daughter is great. This might have been put up 6 years ago but either way you have a good outlook on life. Its appreciated 😌
Thanks for a great video Moose, very informative. I think even I could get this process right! 2016 didn't seem to be that kind to you and there were times I was quite worried for you. But you weathered the storm and look at you now. I'm so happy for you. All the very best to you my friend. Poo
Hey from a jewelers point of view I suggest that you should use "kosher salt" you can find it in the international section in The grocery stores if it isn't in the spices section with the regular salts😘 Morton brand makes a good sized box of the kosher salt that lasts a long time👍💯
Awesome video man I deal with antiques and have alot of silver to scrap. This is a very creative and awesome idea with electricity it would be awesome to throw in 10 pounds at once lol. Anyways what really stuck out is end of video what you said about staying positive. I'm on my third back surgery and waiting to get it. Thanks for sharing and being human god bless you.
Good to see your on a positive run, not been watching for a while so am unaware of whats gone down, guess I have some catching up to do. However I am liking the new you. well done and good luck on the 50 K.
Hoi, the reason the amperage goes up is because as the reaction progresses more and more effective electrolytes and other impurities gets created, the solutions conductivity goes up, more current flows and the amperage goes up. Chloride ions binding to the various metals in the silverware, creating copper chloride, iron chloride and what not.
I use a small brass brush and a tooth brush to get the silver off after it's been sitting in the saltwater/electricity bath. Comes right off. Also, I use cheapo rock salt.
I think doing this without chemicals is probably more cost-effective. One can probably scale this up, do several objects at a time, find a brush to remove the silver faster, and buy broken silverware in bulk. I wonder if the steel is worth anything after the silver is removed? I'm glad to hear your relationship with your daughter has improved. I know stress puts a lot of strain on relationships. So it's great that this aspect of your life has become easier, because your daughter needs you. Positive relationships build self-worth, which will help keep her out of trouble and mentally healthy. I know that from my own childhood :)
Hey, always enjoy the show, and most of the time, learn something from it! and hey, while I've never had ankle surgery I've had 2016's like yours before....back about 1977, and then again about 1981 if you like, I'll tell you about it sometime. Oh, and yeah, keep doing the shows. Red
I was going to try food grade phosphoric acid instead of vinegar with the salt. But I'll see. I used to clean steel with industrial grade phosphoric so I thought it might be a better option.
Hey, like the video. Pretty cool information that's all really new to me. I just started scrapping/ recycling recently myself so I have plenty to learn. I was wondering what you do with the silver after it is removed. Do you melt that down into ingots or something like that?
I am trying this but the plating that I am removing is from silver platted copper out of big industrial breakers and I was wondering if you know why I am getting an orange color foam on top.
Hello Moose . Interesting video , Is it possible to use some of the used AP from fingers to separate silver from plate since there was very little copper on the fingers ? Thanks Rick
moose i am a new subscriber. i watched about 15 of your videos today. and they are great. thanks for the vids and help with recovery of gold and silver. and i hope you continue to make lemonade in 2017
brand new to your channel and scrapping. your videos are the most down to earth I found. I just got half a dozen cell phones and 3 laptops out of closets in my house today(new remember) that I'll take a crack at this week. Thanks for the info!
Moose Scrapper yeah I've been doing the research. the scrap is just for fun and to do science experiments with the kids( don't worry they won't be near the acid). I'll keep checking your vids and maybe post a couple once I take all the info I've gathered and put it to use. keep it coming!
hey moose the contacts or brushes in a car starter are they silver or silver plate was taking one apart and they looked silver if not what are they made of thanks
Further note: I generally buy complete silver sets for about $50. That's about 38 pieces for an 8 place setting. There's a gravy spoon, serving forks, butter knife plus of course knives, forks and spoons. I get about 1-2 g per piece for a rough total of somewhere around 68 g. So, 68 g X.78/g (current price) = $53.04. Now take the metal to the scrap yard. It will weigh about 8-10 pounds. Let's say 8 pounds of brass. That will get you $24. Sometimes its a little more, sometimes a little less. But right now you have $53.04 + $24 - $77.04. That's why $50 is usually a good price to figure for purchases. This will generally give you a break even point + a little extra. Paid $50, got back $77.04 plus when the silver is processed and refined , that $53.04 will sell for much more.
can you help me? im getting dark brown deposits on my stainless steel during the process. Its 1/16-1/8 inch thick and i have no idea what it is. Have used muriatic acid but it comes back. What do you think?
Hey man, I've owed you a 'like' and 'subscribe' for way too long now. I've learned a whole lot from your channel - this was one of your best IMHO. Keep up the good work, your channel is really helping a lot of guys, a lot of whom (unlike me), don't need a reminder to showing their appreciation more often. Long overdue, and for that much I'm real sorry. Glad to be sub 38,000 and 1. You look BTW, lost a heap a weight this year already. Take care man.
Don awsome video, yes be thankful and positive in life cause u only live once. Oh maybe think about redoing some of ur videos or updating I guess u can say, u never know u may have learned something different from the old ones. Just a suggestion, watching ur vids never gets old I enjoy and learn alot. Mid begginer scrapper. 😊 Dolores from Wichita Kansas
I would add a few drops of HCL to get rid of all the muck and you should be left with silver and maybe some copper. Another HCL bath will get rid of the copper
Dear Moose great video and i hope you can help me... i have a 100 gram gold bar mix with other metals how can i get the gold out that bar ;) and i dont know how much other metals there are in the 100 gram gold bar
This is a lot easier than doing the chemical thing. My father was an Industrial Arts teacher. He explained plating to me and how they could get plating off of things. This is the first time I actually saw it done. When you are scraping the silver off, why not use a pyrex dish so you aren't fighting a canning jar?
To put this stainless steel utensils only is that what I'm looking for at the goodwills or do I stick sterling silver in with my water and salt to dissolve the silver off of it and what is AP
Moose i like your work. I go out to nature and find old artifacts. Ive found old silver plate silverwear, silver cup...scrape stuff. Didnt want to go the ap route but will try electrolysis. Good to know what to expect
I have a solar powered battery charger and was wondering could just use a 12vt battery instead of just a battery charger plugged into my wall outlet (thus using electricity that costs money). Or is the amperage too high?
It works. The battery is only good for about 40 pieces but it takes less time, like 2 minutes per. I just did this myself. Dont buy any of this crap, there is no return unless it's free.
Hey Mr. Moose! One of my favorite experiments yet. For cleaning the silver off, has anyone suggested trying one of those ultrasonic jewelry cleaners? Keep it up! :-) As for the truck, I just had to drop ~$2300 on my transmission last week, but they also replaced a piece of the exhaust for me that was leaking. :-P For the problems they had and the tools they broke, I consider it a bit of a bargain. *Watching your own credits! XD
Happy New Year to everyone. If you want to remove the silver from the spoons etc. You can cut the spoons and throw in a drum with stones. Then you can do things other than removing the silver
I have done this a few times and I am having issues. I run 2 pieces of silverware at a time and I am noticing only 1 piece strips at a time at that piece is always on the positive side clamp any ideas?
wait....youre running two silver plated pieces at a time,? as in, one piece connected to positive, one to negative. you need to have a piece of stainless connected to the negative, and the positive to the silver plated
The white stuff is Silver Chloride. Silver plating can be removed by removing the base metal underneath and letting the silver flake off or the silver can react with the chlorine being formed at the anode and form silver chloride. Watch Sreetips to find out how to process the silver chloride.
I just used a grinder and got a pound of grinding off about 25 pounds of scrap . So there will be a bit of copper for A HCI bath to work on . Process took a couple of hrs. So far . Really good for platters .
in this video I use neither. Silver can not be refined with HCL and bleach. Gold however can be if the pieces are small enough. I use regular household bleach, no specific brand.
Yup, tried, forgot to mention it. It certainly gets those little flakes off, the only problem is then trying to get the flakes out of the metal bristles lol
