In his talk, Stephen considers what it might mean to change the mantra of education from “learning anywhere, anytime” to “learning everywhere, all of the time” to create fluid, active environments that mimic the way brains are more inclined to learn.
Stephen is a career social worker with a passion for teaching. His research and work in education and teaching methods have been internationally recognized, and he consults with school districts and universities around the nation, helping them become more active teachers and use the most interactive and evidence-based methods of learning.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Many people are misunderstanding the title of this talk, and so are thinking: "Misleading title". But why? Just think more carefully about it. He was talking about: - when you're being "taught" in a classroom, - you, as a student, - tend to having a hard time capturing most of the learning material/content that the lecturer is trying to teach you. While on the other hand, if you’re being taught on a more thoughtful and updated, scientifically proven way, along with current technological devices and the power of the Internet and its continuously evolving apps and websites and social-networks, and so on, you would be able to be more effectively memorize what you’ll need to remember and understand about each lesson’s content and reasons of why you need to “know” those lesson in the first place. This is why this talk is being titled: "The more you're taught, the less you know", - simply because you as a student tend to quickly forget what the teacher has "taught" you. So, it is simply outdated to learn the old-fashioned way. Sure the title could have been more informatively titled like: “The more you’re taught the old-fashioned way, the less you’ll remember”.

Such an amazing topic to explore. I love using phones and other technology in my classroom. However, I often tell my students that although they have the entire world at their fingertips... we are now drowning in information. It is important to teach the students how to navigate the system and utilize it properly, especially if we are going to use it as an educational tool.

I dropped out of school because it was boring and they didn't teach or care what I wanted to learn, that's the problem with education. My teaches made me feel like what I thought didn't matter and they never ever asked me what I wanted to learn.

The one thing of value I have taken from this video is; "The perpetually sought after solutions to our problems is the continual posting of videos such as these". There is no solution. We are all human flesh and ultimately fail and die!! The question is?? What's next?

First, circumscribing public transportation as a condition of poverty misunderstands why public transportation is a social benefit. It is a communal equalizer that reduces pollution while serving the immediate environment. Also, if you're going to cite quantities of information possible to access with cell phones and gadgets, then dismissing the very real, cumulative effect of books and formal education upon our culture is counterintuitive. Of course, access to gadgets could very well allow a person to learn Urdu, master finance and open them up to a world of disparate opinions, but what is more likely is that same person will be too distracted to dedicate themselves to another language, forget why anyone else's opinion matters and find comfort in whatever fad tickles their notion of humor at that time. The possibilities may be endless, but the outcomes are quite easily predicted.
@roadkill333
@roadkill333 8 лет назад
+Mitchel Knight I disagree. He sees cell phones as a tool of education, a way to help students learn in a setting more productive than a typical lecture. Who knows what merits or motivation a student has to learn, and to keep themselves from distraction. There is structure to education, no matter what method the teacher may choose to implement it. You seem to be questioning the dedication of the student, not the point the speaker is trying to make.

The problem is monetization. Corporations and institutions don't want any part of this way of thinking. Big business and the corporate machine have a stranglehold on politics and law, and it will do everything in it's power to keep it that way. Large entities are run by people who are so far removed from blame by layers of hierarchy that it's nearly impossible to hold them accountable. All life is somewhat selfish, otherwise it wouldn't be successful.

I'm a student, and even though I agree that modern class room is not the way to go, I dont really think that social network teaching is the solution, but maybe I'm just too conservative, I really don't know.
@GT-tj1qg
@GT-tj1qg 7 лет назад
Zudma Onyx I think I agree with you, and I'm a somewhat liberal person. I feel that in some cases people have bounced back too hard off the 'dusty, old professor' stereotype so are desperately trying things that don't actually work but at least look 'with the times'. Like I can't really imagine applying some of what he said to a subject like chemistry in the same way you could with studying social injustice. I would consider the new tactic of the speaker in this video to be similar to the physics trip my secondary school used to have - we went to Chessington because roller coasters are forces and motion in action. Problem was, it looked like new, innovative education, but was in fact another gimmick and nobody learnt anything. But I also feel the current system is not the way to go.

Stop lecturing and let students' learn is essentially the message in this video. Education is not a spectator's sport. Listening to a teacher wax lyrical is BORING. RU-vid can do that so you don't have to. I know, it's a bitter pill to swallow. It is sad to see how some educators are so close minded. Education is supposed to broaden the mind. 🤔 In reality, it has become a big game of trivial pursuit, where all need to do is regurgitate "knowledge" so you can "pass the test" and reach the next level. No learning involved, just a good memory. It's the 21st century. Which century are you teaching your students for?

Now, please, stop screaming. He never insulted the public. He's not trying to undermine the education system. He's a professor himself. He shared points, opinions and studies on why the lecture system is, and was, an inefficient method when it comes to make students learn. You heard him: "In a study of a lecture based course those who tab the course had no significant difference in knowledge than those who never took the course at all, after three years". A student loan of thousands of dollars, and students are basically learning nothing. And, I can tell you, this is not the first study I met with this kind of outcome. I think we can both agree that this is not okay.

Presenter's theme was non sequitur from title. Yeah, that social justice thing has been a little overdone, yeah. So many people have gotten sucked down that rabbit hole. When the eternally offended class can show some self control we can get back to those that have helping those that have less, or nothing. Obama created this class warfare, libs and lefties have to own it. It has been no good but rather unleashed idiocy. Anyway, there is a cost factor with developing and especially delivering new modes of learning. How about people that actually are out there doing their craft / trade become teachers. When you have a class of "professional" teachers they just feed upon their echo chamber and you get the mess education is in, today. Way too many $$ for poor results. Of course there are pockets of excellence, but their is much wasted $$. Oh, that's right, we are a society that kills babies - ones that have emerged from the mother - and chop them to pieces. We have 1/2 society warring for that right - ingnoring reality. Sorry, you lose - and you call it "women's health." Yes, that's our society. The good - all was build-up until 15:55 - the mobile part. Education anywher, anytime. The presenter did have a great perspective of mobile - engage it, somehow - we are not there yet. But, no real world examples. Still none in Q3 2018. Teaching industry should be investigated.

This is outright wrong. Let me ask, why do you learn? You will forget about 40% of it, and that forgetting percentage gets even higher when you consider upper level things... You learn because it makes you think differently, it makes your mind receptive to ideas that it wouldn't had thought possible ever before. It changes your mind's logic system and changes your mind's ability to perceive opinion and fact. The more you are taught, the more you know. Even better, the more you are taught, the more you can question. You can't question something you don't know. You can improve upon something you don't know.
@charlieskinner9067

Instead of “the more you are taught, the more you know,” I think it’s “the more you LEARN, the more you know.” His point is that the way we teach isn’t really effective; and that we should utilize more effective learning strategies.

I really feel sorry for you. Sorry that you had to sit in classes that you didn't want to take. You can lead a student to class, but you can't make him thirsty to learn. But, when the combo of a good teacher and a thirsty student come together, magic happens. I'm sorry you missed out on that.
