The Morel Mushroom Hunt of the Year - Finding 200 Morels in a Day!

My girlfriend and I went out to a local forested area to hunt for morel mushrooms, and boy did we find them! We had hunted at this spot late in April of 2023, but we only found three morels, and they were somewhat dried up. This year we decided to hit the spot earlier, and this strategy paid off in record-breaking fashion! The first hunt of the year was great, but the second hunt was much better than we expected, with many more and much bigger morels! The third hunt, which is this one, was after a hard rain the week before, and that brought up a LOT of fresh morels for the picking! This hunt was absolutely insane, and it'll be hard for us to beat!

It should be anytime now. Our season is about done down here. I think we'll do one more hunt for the year and call it quits.

@@weldmonger1560 You are WAY up north! We got a lot more rain this week, and it got cold again. We might be able to find some more this weekend, but we should be at the end of the season here soon. You'll be finding them soon while we're burning up in the heat down here. I hope you load up!

@@bricehale6593 Awesome! If you got some of the rain that we did, you'll likely find a lot more during the next couple of weeks. Good luck!

I might have to visit the Ohio valley next year. Just once in my life, I would love to find that many in one day.

This is honestly the first year I've really gone out and found a lot. We went too late last year and missed them, but this year we got there just in time. I hope you get the chance to fulfill that dream.

Wow, them are some beautiful yellows. I live in Southwest Michigan and we don’t really start seeing them until the end of April beginning of May. And then it’s always a very short season because it goes from cold to hot almost overnight.😢

I know the feeling. Here in Arkansas it went from 80 to 30 in a day or two. I was worried the cold would end the season early as well. So far, so good, though.

It's Washington County in Arkansas. We're going to try another attempt this weekend to see if anything else came up. This will be the 4th trip, so we'll see how long the season lasts.

What’s the name of the green leafy plants they’re growing in? I see there’s several different, I just need the name of the most common.

I asked my girlfriend, who is a plant expert (compared to me), but she doesn't know. I don't believe this undergrowth has anything to do with where the morels grow, though. This undergrowth is all over the place there, but the morels only tend to grow around certain trees. I believe the trees are smooth maples. We also found some around some wild cherry trees and a sycamore or two, but mostly just smooth maples. We look for trees with light-colored, smooth bark. Of course, you can also find an occasional morel out in the open away from any trees, but those tend to be loners. The largest groups are around the correct types of trees. Sorry I didn't have a better answer, but that's what we know based on this year's hunts. Thank you for the question 😀

Thank you. I didn’t know about the plant and was just curious. I’ve seen several RU-vid videos and this undergrowth seems a popular place for them to hide. I understand it has to do with the trees and not the plant in question. Again, thank you for your reply.

Just an update. My son and I found 53 today. Our personal best. I know some will snicker, but the ribeyes and morels will make a great supper tonight. Also, it was my sons first finds today. He was hot too, nothing got past him. He’s still stoked.

@@MarkTurner-u8v Man, that is amazing! Finding 53 in a day is a fantastic haul, and I'm sure your son loved to be part of a record-breaking haul. My girlfriend is the same way, as we just started doing serious morel hunts this year after only finding three last year late in the season. She loves to garden and forage, so this type of thing may just be her favorite activity. Hopefully, where you're at the season is just getting started and you'll have more opportunity to find an abundance of them. By the way, ribeye and morels sounds delicious to me, as it's my favorite cut! Good luck, and congrats to your son!

Yes, it doesn't look pretty with the mold on it. That's why I mentioned at the end of the video that some of them will be culled or trimmed down to be edible. This one just needs a little trimming, as the mold can be removed to salvage the rest. We won't waste good morel portions. There were several that we didn't video that were WAY worse than this one, and they were left in the woods. Thank you for the view and comment!
