In scouts we used Mors practices and spent the night out in the late fall using his plastic sheet as a tent. I’ve always had his set up of some sort Ada survival kit. I don’t think people nowadays days give him enough credit to his well thought out kit.

Like you say, the bushpot idea has been around for a long time. Back in the 70s, this was normal here in the UK for a day out in the cuds. It was very basic, as there was nothing geared towards what we call bushcraft today (Ray Mears coined the phrase in the 90's) . Most of our kit was borrowed from our grandparents' kitchen and shed and stuffed into a large pot. Backpacks, unless army surplus, were out of our reach financially, so haversacks or respirator bags/gas mask cases were the norm. Mors was the first person I saw on the Internet advocating the bushpot idea. I learned it from my grandfather, so the method has probably been around for longer than we think. You had a tradition of hobo and itinerant workers in the USA after the great depression. Perhaps it goes back to that? The equipment we have today is light years away from what we used back in the day. Love from Scotland.

Howdy from Texas. I also thought of a hobo kit when I saw this. I don't do much camping anymore, but do day hikes, and carry a water bottle with a nesting cup and a Sierra cup that I use as a lid and a bowl. I do have a a bush pot that I keep in a picnic basket (our bugout basket) that we use on car trips. It is packed with what we need, meds, first aid, and a good bit of food. My idea is to use emergency stuff regularly so that deficiencies can be found. A small spatula is the last thing I added.

Upgrade the bullion cubes to bone broth, it comes as a powder in little pouches like the coffee, but has ~8-10g of protein.

I’ve found that a bug head net can be used to keep the bugs off & it can be used to hold all of your stuff when you’re boiling water.

Great kit! I would a pencil sharpener and a large ziplock bag to hold the contents while the pot is in use. Looking forward to part 2

Well thought out and appreciated. Great tip at the end: "Over time your kit will evolve." The two items I've added based on that tip is an Ace Bandage & 6 assorted sized Zip-ties. Neither item add weight and I've used both multiple times.

If you want a bag for water filtering I'd wrap a Milbank bag around the pot. Then instead of the current bag I'd use a dry bagin which you could store water in if needed and it would keep you kit dry in the meantime. I remember Mors suggesting in a video to fill any extra space you have with cordage.

very good kit to put together because I review rations I get water purification tablts in some and solid fuel tabs in some I could add some of those to such a kit

Always liked Mors bushpot survival kit, well rounded for civilian use. I like to wrap a cotton bandana around my bushpots in transit, multi use and you have something to grab a hot handle right there that isn't going to melt with heat and it keeps your lid closed in transit.

Excellent video! It might be worth commenting on why Mors prefered the "bush pot". Because of the dimensions, it is more difficult to spill. Remember the short pots in most older mess kits. You could put soup or stew in them , hang em over the fire only to unceremoniously dump in into the fire when you went to stir it. Because the bush pot is taller, that is much less likely to happen. Also having a lid that doesn't just fall off when you invert the pot, but stays in place, just might save your food if it gets kicked over while on the ground. So those specific proportions are more important than folks might think.

The bandana sheds dye the first few times. I wash mine before I add it to a kit, since I may use it for basic water filtering as you suggested.

Howdy. Great video. In addition….. I carry 6 x 3/4 inch nuts (nuts for bolts). They make great sinkers, great for holding down your make shift trot line and if you tie three together with your string you have a fairly decent bolo for birds and small game.

i'd add.. a waterproof pocket ribbed notebook. and a pencil.. both can be used in an emergency situation as a fire starter.... the pencil can be shaved. some type of game (cards.. etc)

For the most part that is a pretty good kit. The one thing I differ in you in philosophy on, is if you go in the woods, there is what you have on you and in your pockets there is what you carry in a bag. What you carry in your bag should supplement what you already carry in your pockets or on your belt, like a good knife, a flashlite or a lighter etc.

This is not a the only way video. It's merely a look at a philosophy that Mors taught. I agree with you completely. I always have items on me.

Uses for something like this is: dayhike, one overnight camping, hunting trip,Emergency either in your car/home/apartment duringstorm etc, good for 1 day or soo depending on what else you may add.And no something like this is not too big nor heavy if you do any of those activities,or build one up too stash in car/boat/apartment/house..

Great kit. May I offer a few suggestions? 1. If you do not already have a stone on your belt knife, a small stone may come in handy to do a touch-up on your blades. 2. We have retired early in SE Asia. We noticed that bullion cubes deteriorate rapidly in our high-humidity, hot environment. We learned that bullion powder available in sachets from Knorr is far superior when stored in our kits. Another commenter before me (@tarody3953) mentioned bone broth in sachets as an alternative. That would be difficult for us to obtain in the Philippines. 3. Ferrocerium rods in contact with dissimilar metals and any moisture can deteriorate to a point where they become useless when needed most. May I suggest that the rod be contained inside a thin plastic tube or similar material so that it will never make contact the the stainless pot or other metal objects. Now, on to part two, we also missed while away from home base
