As someone who plays defense, I’ll vouch for this. But playing defense usually comes with the bonus of extra ice time. Some teams I’ve been on have had a 3 man rotation on defense. That extra time is worth losing out on some points IMO.

CORRECTION: Roy did not ask to be traded because the fans booed him. 1: He asked to be traded because of the escalating tension between Roy and head coach Mario Tremblay. 2: He asked to be traded when the head coach Mario Tremblay left him in goal for one if not the worst games of his career, where he got scored on over and over and Tremblay waited until he had been scored on nine times before calling him to the bench.

The sponsorship system in Quebec had ended in the 60s and only through the wits of GM Sam Pollock (who pulled a rather quick one on the California golden seals) did the Canadiens acquire their first Round pick and ultimately chose Guy Lafleur. So showing him at the moment of the video talking about “the French Canadian rule” is unfortunately erroneous. Guy Lafleur sadly passed away this year and the story of his draft year has been making the rounds a lot in Quebec since. Thanks for the great content, I’ve been a follower for a couple of years now (has it been that long already!?), but I just had to point this one out :)

The only reason Joe Malone's goals to assists ratio is so out of whack is because of the rules at the time forbid forward passing and, oh yeah... assists were almost NEVER awarded for anyone. The Denneny brothers were two of the four league leaders in assists in Malone's rookie year... they both had 10.
@trevorlambert4226
@trevorlambert4226 Год назад
I agree with the way assists were awarded, but I don't know if that was directly related to forward passing being forbidden. It was only forbidden in the offensive zone. So you could still get a lead pass in the neutral zone, and you could still get a pass from behind the net or cross ice in the offensive zone.

Your account of the French Canadian rule is wildly off the mark. It wasn't created during the Great Depression and came about in the early 60's when the NHL draft system was created to replace all the team's scouting/development networks across the continent to create more parity at attracting young talent - the sponsorship system. The Habs were just really good at it, especially attracting and keeping local talent from Quebec itself. The fact no other team ever complained about this fabled bias and unfair measure speaks volumes. It should be reiterated EVERY team had similar systems in varying forms and size and, as such, the absolute gross majority of rising young talent was spoken for by the time this rule came into effect. Few players were drafted for some time and examples can be seen where other teams found very talented NHLers in Quebec despite the Canadiens' domination of the region. From 1963 to 1967, the Canadiens never once used the rule, which was choice of picking in the determined order or having first choice of two French Canadian players and effectively not getting a pick. While they used it in 68 and 69, it hardly contributed to any measurable on-ice success in the dynasty days of that insane team from the 70s.

Malones "44 g and 4 assists" ratio is not as impressive when you notice that A) they had no forward passing and B) second assists were not counted. (His goals per game ratio is though). Bondras 94-95 ratio of 34 goals to lead the league with a mere 9 assists with modern rules is the greatest record of all time in that category... i mean wow!

Roy didn't demand to be traded because the fans booed him, he demanded to be traded because his coach hung him out to dry solely for personal reasons. The boos didn't help but he knew he was bad that night and that wasn't what bothered him.
@richardgratton7557

The coach was Mario Tremblay. He had been hired only a month and a half before to replace Jacques Demers. Demers and Roy had a special relationship. Tremblay, who had been a teammate of Roy in the mid-80s, wanted to lay down the law and treat Roy like any other player. On December 2nd 1995, Detroit was whipping the Canadiens asses and Tremblay only pulled Roy out after Detroit’s 9th goal of the game. Roy came to the bench and said that this was his last game with Montreal. He was then traded to Colorado (which had just been transferred from Quebec City the previous summer) and went on to win the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe trophy. Tremblay and Roy have since made up. In fact, they shot some commercials together a few months ago where they spoof their feud/rivalry. They are both beloved in Québec.😊

In his perception, we allow a lot of “paper assists” now when he thought an assist was more like How they score it in basketball. I wish there were a video to compare Wayne Gretzky's stats to any other team sports player...the only other player I think that would come close is Wilt Chamberlain in basketball and this was mainly due to 1 season...Gretzky was pretty consistent at least from 1980 - 1995. Also he won a few cups and made a few others HOFers. Sure you have the Jordan/Pippen combo or the Stockton/Malone duo but how about Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, Lowe, Fuhr, Robitaille, hell McSorley (all these guys were teammates of the Great One and all but McSorley (because we're not including PIM) are within the top 50 greatest NHLers of all-time). All I have to say is Wayne Gretzky (2857 pts/1487 GP) next is Jaromir Jagr (1921 pts/1733 GP). In other words, Jags...one of the best ever would have to play another 10 seasons IN HIS PRIME to even come close to this record. Name another team sport athlete with such a record....other than Wilt.

You could probably add Tom Brady to that conversation. Nobody will ever touch his records. Winning superbowls are tough and he has won more superbowls than every franchise in the NFL, has at least 2000 more passing yards than any other player in the superbowl, has appeared in 18% of all superbowls, and has the most ever postseason touchdowns in NFL History with 86....next on the list has 45. Id say Tom definitely comes close with his statistical dominance.

Patrick Roy INVENTED butterfly goaltending. Accept it. It's become the norm and why goalies now have to giants.

Everyone likes to refer to Gretzky as a pure goal scorer because he as the most goals... The man has 714 more assists than second place....

4:21 nope. Not better than Nick Lidstrom. Orr may have points but that just means he’s a true star winger playing defense. Like that one guy (bowman, was it?) said that if he put Sergei Federov on defense, he’d be a Norris contender. Not to detract from Orr and his talent, but as a pure DEFENSIVE talent Nick Lidstrom is unrivaled

The only reason no one challenged him is you don’t mess with the goalie from the other team. That’s rule number one in hockey. Don’t mess with the other team goalie or you will get messed up six ways from Sunday. Rule number two states clearly to see rule number one.

I'm not a fan of Roy due to me being a leaf fan , but wow Roy was something special. Terry Sawchuk & Martin Brodeur & Patrick Roy ! Top 3 Goats , Terry Sawchuk at #1 !

Having Adam Oates as a line mate definitely didn’t hurt Brett Hull’s goals-to-assists ratio. Not to say he wouldn’t have still been a goal scoring monster...just not as much.

As a lifelong Wings fan, I don’t have a whole lot of love for Patrick Roy. But seeing him deke out two dudes and do a spin past Gretzky...Lmao after that, I’m finding it a bit harder to dislike the guy.
