1:21:28 Man, it is definitely tough to get the proposal correct. We went on vacation to Maine, Mt Desert Island, and my idea was to propose at Otter Cliffs in Acadia. We start walking Ocean Path trail from Sand Beach and about half way through, my parents and wife were getting tired and I'm trying to keep them pushing on. We turn back and just drive to the cliff as I try to iterate its really important to see it. My mom is a photographer on the side so I wanted to make sure she had enough space left on her memory card but here she is, taking pictures of a sea gull while I'm trying to give her subtle hints... thankfully she had enough space to get some pictures but it felt like everything was going to go wrong.

To my ear, "chilly" is to Chile as "kiyodo" is to Kyoto. When I moved to the mainland US from Hawaii, I was about 10 years old and it was the first time I heard Japanese words and names being pronounced *like that*. My teacher was excitedly telling me about her adventures in "kiyodo" after I told her my mom had just moved back to the US from Japan, and it took me a few minutes to figure out where "kiyodo" was. It was worse than hearing my non-Japanese cousin tell me she liked "Top Raymen". Chilly-ness aside, British pronunciation of tapas ("tap-ass") never fails to make me giggle. 😹

omg when they were talking about getting recognized in Japan I felt so bad because I ran into Joey and Aki in harajuku recently and I did exactly what they said don't do which is straight up ask for a photo right away. I thought it was too weird to randomly strike up a conversation since it looked like they were heading somewhere and honestly it was more because I was so nervous I couldn't say anything coherently. I wanted to just tell them thank you for always creating such amazing content but my mind went blank and I felt like I was holding them up. Even before going to Japan I watched Joey's interview with Roland san and a podcast episode instead of packing and almost missed my flight. So I want to convey to them that they are such meaningful people in my life but all I could do was ask for a photo and say I really like your videos. I feel so bad I was that type of person. I know they won't ever see this but I just want to apologize, I wish I could be better at speaking but it was so nerve-wracking all I could do was blabber like a werido. So please don't feel like you are just an object if we ask for a photo first because that's the only thing I can do without messing up. I promise you guys mean the world to many of us and sometimes we are just really bad at interacting with other humans like me. It's just such a surreal honor to see you guys in person so thank you and sorry for dealing with people like me who make terrible first impressions T_T

Shit, Hearing the engagement stories was fun. I too wanted to recreate our first date, but instead we evacuated Kyiv because of the war and so as it happened I just proposed on our anniversary in her mother's back yard, lol. Oh, and a week before our marriage russians shot missiles near the place where we were supposed to sign paperwork and we had to reschedule. Overall, can recommend marriage, can't recommend living near terrorist state.

You’re so much more than a RU-vidr, Chris. I think by explaining your life and journey first, and RU-vid last is the key. You moved your life to Japan, learnt the language and have accomplished so much. You should express that to people in person that do not know of your RU-vid channel. That’s what you did to get to where you are today and the following and success you have after all… the only difference was it being in front of a camera and being posted on this platform. You would have the same effect of respect and interest if you do the same in person without mentioning RU-vid. After all, RU-vid was your tool, it does not define you. It’s your life that gives the story.

On the topic of the foreigner speaking language videos, xiaomanyc or xiaoma is the guy who started it and is legitimately the goat. His title formats are what everyone uses now but his videos are actually good because you can tell he has such geniune enthusiasm for learning about different and lesser known languages and cultures. Not just for the clicks

The reason I haven't visited Japan, is literally because I don't want to travel during Summer, but you are forgetting one important thing. It is very, very hard to get off work for more than maybe a week or if lucky 2, in any month if it is not July/August. So that is probably why this is the trend, if it was easier to get 3 weeks off or more during early spring or October or something, I'd be there in a heartbeat...

It’s been kind of a weak month for trash taste IMO with a lot of canned episodes. 2 of them I didn’t even bother to finish, which is new for me. A Chris episode is just what we needed to bring it back to life.
