Welcome to Sibiu, Transylvania - one of the most beautiful cities in Romania.
Sibiu is a charming medieval city in Romania with a rich cultural heritage and well-preserved historical architecture. This is for sure one of the best things to do in Romania - spend at least one day exploring the beautiful Sibiu, its small roads, and all the attractions you can find.
In 2007, Sibiu was designated as the European Capital of Culture, alongside Luxembourg. This prestigious title recognized the city's rich cultural heritage, vibrant arts scene, and its contribution to promoting European cultural diversity.
Sibiu is also home to the ASTRA National Museum Complex, the largest open-air ethnographic museum in Romania. Spanning over 96 hectares, the complex showcases traditional Romanian village life, with over 400 historical buildings and structures from various regions of the country.
The Council Tower, located in the historic center of Sibiu, offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. This medieval tower served as a defensive structure, a grain storehouse, and even a prison. You can climb to the top for breathtaking views of the city's red-roofed houses and beautiful squares.
Sibiu is also known by its German name, Hermannstadt. Due to its historical connection with the Transylvanian Saxons, a German-speaking community that settled in the area centuries ago, Sibiu has preserved a distinct German architectural and cultural influence.
Sibiu is home to the Brukenthal National Museum, one of the oldest museums in Romania. Founded in 1817, it houses an impressive collection of European art, including works by famous painters such as Titian, Van Dyck, and Rubens.
Another famous attraction is the "Bridge of Lies" (Podul Minciunilor), a pedestrian bridge located in the Lower Town. Legend has it that the bridge would creak or make noise whenever someone told a lie while crossing it. Today, visitors enjoy the bridge's unique architecture and the surrounding medieval atmosphere.
The next top-rated attraction in my opinion would be the Evangelical Cathedral, also known as the Church of Saint Mary, that is a significant landmark in Sibiu. Its impressive Gothic architecture, intricate stained glass windows, and ornate interior make it a must-visit attraction for history and architecture lovers.
Sibiu's Christmas Market is renowned for its enchanting atmosphere and traditional festivities. The market features beautifully decorated wooden stalls selling handicrafts, local delicacies, and mulled wine. Visitors can immerse themselves in the magical ambiance, enjoy live music performances, and admire the stunning Christmas lights adorning the city.
