I can't believe this. I used to own that guitar, LOL!!! There can't be many 1976 renecked wine red Les Paul customs out there! I got it originally in around 2007 or 2008 here in Chicago. It was indeed renecked by Gibson at a cost of approx $1,100 USD. Some Craigslist dude just needed cash and I remember getting a pretty good deal on the guitar. I was born in 1976, so that's why I originally was happy to have it. It had all nickel/chrome hardware on it when i got it. The gold hardware was done after i sold it. I don't know if the ebony board was transferred from the original neck unfortunately. It's a good guitar for sure though. It's hilarious to see it again!

It appeared to be a 2000s Gibson Les Paul Custom in the listing... what arrived had a much richer history. There is nothing 'wrong' with the guitar so to speak, but in order to love this guitar, you kind of have to appreciate the Norlin Era of Gibson which not all do. Thanks for watching!

I agree... however, finding a buyer that appreciates those parts for what they are worth would be more difficult as a complete set. If I sell them separately, all of the parts will be used again and not just sit in a case forever.

I dunno, that's part of the "magic" I think. Even if they are never used, the original parts would be worth it I think. I have an original 1972 Martin D-18 that my dad found in 1974 in a pawn shop. He gifted it to me on my 21st birthday all those years later after it sat in the closet for most of them. It still has the original Martin tuners (they had been replaced with much better Grover's), and the original nut in two pieces because it was broken during a repair. Also has the original strap even though it is pretty horrible. I can't imagine not having those items in the case. It's all part of the guitar now. It all tells a story of the guitar.

I clicked on this video because the photo looks a lot like my 2016 wine red Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro Ltd. Looks just like it. You seem to have stumbled across a good deal, and that you're happy with the guitar makes it even better. Nice playing. I can hear why you like it so much.

Your knowledge and investigating is amazing. So did Gibson tell you much about the 76 serial?
@Trog
@Trog 6 лет назад
The Gibson rep was very kind and accommodating, but in the end wasn't very helpful as far as identifying the guitar. They really don't have any records of anything before the 90s as far as what they made - if you get a good representative they might have general knowledge to help with previous guitar dates. If you have a modern era guitar though, they are pretty helpful - They can tell you many different specs of the guitar, what color it originally was and what model it is. They are especially helpful when trying to figure out the year or model of reissues which can be kind of tricky. 1-800-444-2766 option 1 then option 2

Gibson doesn't have records before the 90's?! That's insane, considering the collectable-ness and historic significance of their products.

When the current owners bought it from Norlin, they probably just tossed out the paperwork in the move to Memphis. This has happened to many musical instrument companies.

Was watching this guitar on ebay, but decided to pass mostly due to the shipping price at $150. I strongly hope that you contacted the seller and got some serious reimbursements from him, I'd say between $300-500. Only this will help you to make some profit on it. Because for that amount, as you know, you can get the one that was not tempered with. And it might very well be a good guitar, but you are not just some guy who was looking for a guitar for a bedroom play. You, as I understand, are the person who tries to make a buck out of it. And there's not many people who'd want a custom with swapped neck for ~2K. As per Gibsons from 70s being shitty, as someone noted here - there is nothing wrong with them ( other than heavy weight and different specs and appointments). I've had many dozens of them and after a good setup most of them sound pretty damn good. I still have a few from that era and not thinking about letting them go. My personal favorite is my 76 standard, beat to shit, multiple holes, refretted by Gary of Fried Guitars when he was still working in Brooklyn. The best sounding one out of all CS's and R's I still have. Good luck to you, man.
@Trog
@Trog 6 лет назад
I did not reach out to the seller about the guitar. I figured I would be met with a brick wall. Some people will dig this piece whereas others won't. It has an interesting story behind it, but since the work is professional and done by Gibson, I have no real qualms with the guitar. There have been lots of comments about the price of the guitar. Realistically, I'll break even on the guitar and make a little bit from selling the original parts. It is essentially a 2000s customs at this point.
@MusicHelper911
@MusicHelper911 6 лет назад
You absolutely should've contacted the seller. If he mentioned this upgrade it wouldn't go that far, and most likely you wouldn't bid on it if you knew. The upgrades like this must be mentioned. And appropriate action should be taken. It's not too late, you know. But...it's a free country, if you do not want to do it, no one can force you. Good luck.

So nice! As soon as I saw it I knew what it was. I own a 76 3pup LPC and when I saw yours it indeed did look odd but the ser# was the kicker for me. The body is clearly a 76 and that # is 76...new neck! Nice score ! BTW, I was the service coordinator for the Canadian Gibson distributor in the mid 70s...I saw it all!

Great story! I had an experience with Gibson that made me think they don't (or didn't, in the early 90s,) log their individual serial numbers until you mail in the warranty card. I bought a one-off Les Paul Classic 1960 Reissue in '92. The Gibson rep who brought it to the dealer claimed he grabbed it from the Custom Shop, and the honeyburst finish was the only one made. Long story short, I e-mailed Gibson about a year later to see if it really did come from the Custom Shop, as there really were no Classic 1960 Reissues with that finish offered by Gibson. The reply was that they had no record of it, and that I must have the serial# and finish description wrong, AND they gave me an example of what it SHOULD have been. Well, I had wanted to keep all the store tags and documentation in case it turned out to be more valuable in my grandkid's time, so I also kept the warranty card. Back then, fakes were really beginning to get VERY good, and I began to worry that I'd have a problem if I ever needed warranty service, or if I wanted to sell it, so I broke down and sent in the warranty card. So I gave it a month, sent Gibson another e-mail and, voila!! Suddenly they have the record of my one-off! The moral of the story is, with the myriad fakes out there, especially from China (some of which are VERY convincing! If you purchase a new Gibson of any kind from a dealer, fill in the warranty card and send it in immediately!! I eventually traded it in on a JEM777, since I had a Classic 1960 Reissue Gold Top and a Custom Shop Les Paul made to my own personal specs, and I just wanted to diversify. The dealer I traded it in to needed a couple of days to verify it as a Gibson so, if I hadn't sent in the card, I would be playing three Les Pauls instead of two, plus, the JEM.

A reneck done at the Gibson factory still makes it a real complete Gibson guitar and definitely worth more than it would be with a unrepairable neck break. A good story isn’t a bad thing either, some people love instruments with a story behind them. I always thought the Gretsch Roy Orbison played in the late 50’s to mid 60’s was really cool. It was Renecked by Gretsch with a Gibson Super 400 neck Orbison already had and he had them install Shobud 8 string steel guitar pickups and rewired for stereo. Crazy guitar I always found really interesting.

You should do a Gibson history video explaining their serial numbers, logo differences, and body types all from the beginning to present day. You could honestly probably make an entire series of that, but I would absolutely watch it. It's so interesting to hear your knowledge about those kinds of things. I want to know more!

For some reason a lot of collectors disregard the 70's 'Norland era' Gibsons. For many years I had a 1975 Les Paul Standard and many of the comments you made hold true for that model as well. The interesting thing about the Les Paul Standard from that year is that the decal on the headstock said 'Les Paul Deluxe' while the truss rod cover said 'Standard' and the guitar had full size pickups. The reason for this is that Gibson mostly made the 'Deluxe' model with the mini humbuckers during that period. If you wanted a 'Standard' it had to be special ordered and would come through as I described. Another interesting thing from that period is that the frets were not 'tanged' into the binding as most Les Pauls were. The frets actually sat on top of the binding leading many people to think the guitar had been re-fretted. I bought mine in 1978 and sold it to Rudy (Rudy's Guitars on 48th St. in NYC) in 2015. My Les Paul had a really good tone and beautiful sustain. I only sold it because it also was one of the heaviest Les Pauls ever made and was getting too heavy for me to play regularly.

I think the Purple glitter is badass. It's obviously got a chromallusion color paint? The changes to multiple colors & different angles. My brother painted one of my Jackzon RR1 v's this color & i love it. Of course the Jackson is a cooler looking body period,but the purple really makes really makes it pop. I get compliments on it everytime somebody see's it,even before i take it out of the case. (Just open the case) that body looks like the Roswell Rhoads V by Jackson. You're probably right that it will go up in value.

It’s not totally unheard of that Gibson couldn’t find anything on a specific 70’s era serial number... but one they actually took back in for a total reneck in the 2000’s era where that was all logged?... Even crazier they were unable to put two and two together in about 30 seconds when you said you had a 76 looking body with a 76 serial # but it was stamped in the neck..... cool story though.

I don't know if you've done this or not in a new video, but it might be better to use a amp with a bigger speaker for the dirty tones. The small speaker lacks the low end to hear the tone accurately. Maybe it's just me lol....However, I love this one!!!! It's so beautiful

Back in 92 I walked into a music store and saw a Les Paul SG standard asking 499. Had Art deco sideways vibrato, PAF looking pickups, original case and original hardware, but the Gibson logo looked not like a 60 to 62 headstock it should have been. None the less I pulled the trigger. I was convinced it was re-necked with a 69 neck. Took it to Gil Southworth in DC and sure enough it was!! He appraised it for 1500! Still have it and current value is 5 to 7, if original 10 to 14. The only difference in this story is original serial number was stamped into the back of the neck. Gil said they did that then.

Great job - I was worried at first that this would be a very good Chiner copy....very refreshing to follow your deduction of the history of the guitar....very cool (I have an early-70's lefty sandwich). I have a 1997 lefty GLPC that I bought new (NOS) from Elderly's in Lansing, MI, in Y2K. As a lefty, the Wine Red was a bland choice, but it was Miss-Right-Now so I chose it over a more expensive lefty PRS McCarty, which to me at the time, appeared to offer no more than what I purchased. Tag price was $4799 (tag still in the case) and I bought it for roughly $1975 (no arguments to staff-sales)....most expensive of my ~55 lefties before or since (yup I'm a cheap-skater hehehe). Cheers :-D Anyway, veeeery cool vid....Thanks :)

You know that Gibson had made guitars in Nashville that were into the 900 range (last 3 digits), but hasn't been done since 1977, and they reserve those "900" numbers for prototypes. NICE score man! Makes me miss my 1968 Les Paul Custom even more. :(

You seem to know more technical stuff about Gibson guitars than anyone I have seen. Maybe you or someone you recommend could solve a mystery about a guitar I own. I bought this guitar from a pawn shop in the late 70's. The name on the headstock is Estrada, but everything about it shouts Gibson to me. There is no serial number inside, or on the headstock, but it looks and sounds like a Gibson, it is a 1965 style Dove, complete with Gibson logo on the neck and headstock, the moustache bridge, dove pickguard, and the thing that clinches it for me is the "0" fret. After much research and questioning, I have a vague story that a group named Mica illegally purchased some surplus Gibsons from one of their warehouses and used them to make copies in Japan. The copies were obviously copies and none had the "0" fret. I would like someone's professional opinion to confirm or deny my conviction that this guitar was born in the Gibson factory.

I think something similar happened with the LP owned by Mark Boland, he famously has an older LP Standard with an LP Custom neck. The reason I heard for this was that Gibson wasn’t producing a lot of Standards at the time and Mark wanted the guitar to tour with. Gibson happened to have a Custom neck on hand and Mark okay’d the installation so he could have his guitar back sooner. I almost wondered if yours had its neck replaced in the same era being an older example but i believe his was replaced in the 70’s not the 2000’s.

I can tell you what happened to this guitar, it was dropped or something like that and the headstock broke off (common in many Gibson's due to the 17 degree pitched back headstock) and was sent back for a re-necking. It is a beautiful guitar.
@TheSixfinger1
@TheSixfinger1 6 лет назад
My main squeeze for years was a 74 Deluxe like Scott Gorham’s out of Thin Lizzy! Sadly, someone dropped it and snapped the headstock. Even though it had a professional repair by a top luthier, it was never the same. I’ve had many Gibson’s over the years that have needed head stock repairs. They are never the same after. Many people say the repair makes them stronger, but in my experience, they lose their natural sustain. The sustain is in the grain!

Taking a guitar that was essentially a trainwreck and repaired, then creating the mystery and walking us through it (When all you had to do in the beginning was look at the pots). Sorry Steve I am another 1976 renecked wine red Les Paul customs out there! Mine had the gold hardware, A set of lights fell on mine and broke the neck but didn't hurt the body, I could not afford Gibson so I hired a Tech that restored guitars, He had mercy on me and charged me very little labor, so I just had to pay mostly for the neck from Gibson. I cant remeber his last name but his first name was Jeff and he worked out of Desoto Mo for Frank Mann who had a vintage guitar shop running from the back of his Music store, "The Music Connection" I have several pics of me with the guitar in the early 80's it was damaged in the late 80's and sat in the case for years, if it's the same guitar. Ha remembered the guys name. "Jeff Bailey" he was the repairer. He fixed guitars for a living for Frank. Hanging around the Music connection I helped box a Guitar for Brian Setzer, and herd about Angus Young and Eric Clapton's representative purchasing guitars over the phone from Frank. I sold the Guitar local here in Missouri a State bordering Illinois I would add, around 2007. Original fret board was used as well as the head stock covering, binding was soaked in coffee over night to try and match the original.

I have a weirder one. A 1956 Custom that was renecked with an 80's Studio Standard neck. (Dots and Binding) as with yours it's obviously real Gibson bits, but much messier as somebody plugged the stop tailpiece and made it a wrap around, and hogged the P-90 routs out for humbuckers at some point. =( It also seems to have had a Bigsby either originally or added later. One piece mahogany all the way through, no maple cap, all of the telltale routs in the control cavity, and the original switch cavity cover. My assumption is whoever had it fixed did it in the early 80's and went for whatever the cheapest bound neck was, but I'll never know for sure.

Easiest way to tell a 70's LP (IMHO) is the cutaway. 70's Les Paul's have a sharper horn. It was this way until 1982 I believe when the cutaway went back to the softer, original style.

Very interesting. Not sure I would have figured that out. Determine value is also a challenge. I lean towards saying this is like a repaired headstock or neck crack. Convential thinking says anytime the original is modified, it's considered non stock and somewhat devalued
@Trog
@Trog 6 лет назад
I view this more as a conversion rather than a 'repair.' This example isn't for everyone, but it does have a cool story behind it and some people love it for that! Thanks for watching!
@contrabandjoe7974
@contrabandjoe7974 6 лет назад
conversion... so like any stock guitar that has been "modified", the value 99% of the time decreases... in example, you swap pickups, refret, change tuners, nut, circuitry, knobs etc... do you feel this guitar is devalued with the extreme modification? wonder how dealers would treat this guitar price wise??
@Trog
@Trog 6 лет назад
I believe this guitar holds the same value of a 2000s Les Paul Custom or slightly below because that is essentially what it is now. I would personally rather buy a renecked guitar by the parent company than a repaired neck by who knows who. There are differing opinions out there, but this is how I feel and judging by the number of watchers on the listing, many others also feel. It is no longer a '76 custom. It's a 2000s custom with an interesting story behind it's body. I expect it to sell in the low to mid 2s. I like the story behind this one.

I have a friend that has the perfect mate to it. A 1976 Custom, neck is perfect. Was supposed to be an original white one with black back and neck. Someone beveled all of the binding off it and rounded all of the edges and installed a tummy cut and arm relief (poorly) and stained it cherry (poorly). It's a pancake body too. Sad to look at but it sounds and plays REALLY good.

That's awful to hear. The 'Tuxedo' Customs as I call them (White top, Black Back and Sides) are incredibly rare. At least it is loved and played though! That's most important. I had a tuxedo custom in '16 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4ilyT0yNeCg.html

Regarding the discussion of the serial number. There is one other thing about that serial number. Forgive me if this was mentioned. I was in a hurry when I stumbled on this video. Anyway the guy in the video says the serial number doesn't make sense but seems to come to terms with it being the correct number. The depth of the numbers are too deep and too close together for them to be the original stamped serial number. If this is in fact a real Gibson the serial number was probably restamped by someone. Gibson doesn't do serial numbers this deep and the numbers are normally not this close together. So they were definitely restamped into the Headstock. The fret board does look like it could be the original though.

I like that guitar as well. You must be quite happy as Gibson necks are prone to break anyway so you got it AFTER it was repaired. Also, is that Buckethead at 10:54? 8-|

I don't know what you paid for this guitar, but if it was a reasonable amount you got a bargain. Musical instruments are made to be played, and not parked in some museum or hidden in a collection. The guitar seems to play very well and sounds great to my ear. Respect it, play it, and even love it. It's a fine instrument. Good luck.

The whole video the owner goes on and on about every detail, revealing his total love of this great guitar. Then at the very end, he says it's for sale ????? I'm thinkin' what the hell??? How can someone who totally loves a musical instrument that is one of a kind, just turn around and want to sell it. Makes no sense...You either think it's great or you don't. The fact that you want to sell it means it's not worth it to you to want to keep it....

I buy, review and sell guitars. Once it has sold, I buy another guitar and the process occurs again. This is not a one-time type of video. I teach people about many different musical instruments and their histories - mainly Gibsons

Many thanks for the info about "Gibson-Year" I have an ES-335 TD in the same colour as your Les Paul. I bought my 335 back in 1987 and I always believed it was a mid 70's guitar now I know it is a late 1975 due to the serial starts with 99.
@Trog
@Trog 6 лет назад
Very cool. I'm glad I could help! You don't see too many decals starting with the 99 since there were a lot more 00 and 06 made. It might be a bit tricky to see on a 335, but if you can get a mirror in there and read the pot codes you should see 137YYWW. Y=year W=week. For example 1377534 would mean 34th week of 1975

I don't understand how a guitar-body of 40 years old can have so little wear in the back. It looks hardly used. Second, don't Gibson keep an register of their renecking, especially when they are that expensive (and they make sure the serial number is the same?)? And not intending to be mean, but you say you played a lot of Gibsons, hoewever your playing doesn't look very experienced. So I sense a lot of contradictions. But nice video anyway.
@Trog
@Trog 6 лет назад
I've had around 1000 Gibsons in the past 7 years - you don't have to be the most skilled player to know how they feel or how they are made. The whole guitar is refinished so any wear that it did have was erased at that point in time. The Gibson rep I spoke with did not have access to the repairs records and said they do not give that info out over the phone

My ten year old Les Paul has no marks anywhere. Why? Because I take care of it. I never play it wnile wearing a belt and I make sure that any clothing does no have sharp zips where they can scratch. I always put is on a stand or in its case, never lean it agsinst the wall. simple.

So you actually got a smokin' deal for a guitar with a neat history. You wouldn't have blacked out the price if you didn't get it for a song. 👍 70s Customs are my favorites, mainly because a 73 natural w/ gold hdwr was my first "real" guitar. They also play so nicely, have ebony fretboards, and weigh like 12lbs...SUSTAIN! 😎

Being an owner of a 76 LPC I know quite a bit about them, and have to say mine is great. Heavy yes, but the guitar is freaky good. Did You get the original knobs? I'm the original owner of mine and the guitar's sound has aged very well. I have early recordings of mine and it has aged like a vintage wine.
@Trog
@Trog 6 лет назад
76s customs are nice. I find they have 60s styled necks with just a little be more to them than the late 70s. I prefer them for that reason. Seeing as the knobs were the only original thing left on the guitar besides the TRC, I replaced them to what would be on a 2000s custom - speed knobs. Thanks for watching!

Pancake body, Ahhhh! First time I stripped one to refinish for a customer I wasn't aware of them. I thought "wow, that's a thick cap." I cringe now whenever I pick up any '69+ Les Pauls. Most of them feel like I have an anvil over my shoulder, and I'm not talking about the 80's Canadian metal band." Good research for this guitar, bravo. I thought that I was myopic about guitar model/date/construction.

You can get these on DH Gate for $50 depending on if theres any sales happening. It's a "Chibson", a made in China knock off of a Les Paul. They seem to have decent quality. They do replicas of reissues, and have serial numbers stamped like these. That's why Gibson couldn't find the number. Look them up on here. There's lots of people who collect them.
