The Most Colorful Neighborhood of Istanbul: BALAT & FENER
Istanbul in general is a very touristic city but there are also other places to see in Istanbul which are frequented and touristy but mostly by the LOCALS and two of them are the neighborhoods of Balat and Fener in Fatih.
While walking in these neighborhoods you will breathe the authentic and unique atmosphere full of diversity in every corner.
If you like getting off from the most touristic routes then these places are the perfect ones to get lost at for a day since there are many things to see in Balat and Fener.
As well, in the past few months these places have become instragram spots among the locals and the few tourists visiting this area.
If you also enjoy the street photography then this place is for you.

I stayed in Istanbul for 4 days but nobody told me about these places. As tourists we like to soak in local flavors and both the places offer that vintage charm.

We were here in mid January this year, it was a cold day and little rainy , but this place was still charming, many beautiful cafes and little shops, love the old style buildings, and there were many Syrian refugee children, bit naughty & disturbing to the tourists, some nice local Turkish people tried to talk to those children though. Easy to reach by bus from Emononou.

Reminds me a little of the island of Burano near Venice, Italy. I love when they make neighbourhoods so colorful like that! :)

Fener ve Balat , Cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarında şehrin dini azınlıklarının birarada yaşadıkları mahalleler idi. İslam, Hristiyan ,Yahudi bayramlarını, bölgenin sakinlerinin , birlikte kutladıkları ender bölgelerden biri idi. .. (Birkaç mahalle daha vardı .. Ortaköy,Kuzguncuk gibi) O günlerin tarihe karışıp, geri gelemeyeceğini bilmek hüzün veriyor.

Hermoso Bery!!! ese costado de Estambul poco transitado por los turistas es maraviilloso, amo los lugares así .... Me fascina adentrarme en lo cotidiano , en lo que el ciudadano local transita diariamente....Te agradezco infinitamente que lo compartas.. espero más rincones como este.... Estuvimos el verano pasado y nos encantó el barrio. Empezamos visitando la parte menos turística pero muy auténtica. Me refiero a la zona donde se grabó la serie legendaria "Çukur" . Pudimos entrar en el café de los Koçovali y psear por el mercado de fruta. Lo recomiendo para los fans de la serie.

Bery, I was wondering if for a fee, you could help my family and I while we are in instanbul on our vacation. 2 of them would like to stay to work legally of course and we would like to be guided in how to do that the right way, as well as finding inexpensive housing in a safe area. Most of those homes were mansions owned by Greeks "Rum" prior to the pogroms and population exchange. These were some of the wealthiest families in Constantinople. Only a mere shadow remain in Istanbul, maybe 2-3000 and mostly quite elderly.

There is no place called constantinople and this area looks like Skopje where is the capital city of republic of Macedonia. The country of Alexander the great.
