That's just it though- music is all rhythm. I argued with a guy right here on RU-vid years ago that no, its 50/50 harmony/melody and rhythm. But the more I have written music, the more I've studied it, the more I realize he was exactly right- it is all rhythm. Rhythm is what changes and defines a piece of music from another, because we've all put together the same chords and chord patterns, as there's really only so many you can make. But rhythm, texture, inflection, all the fine details are what give your music its personal touch and what makes it ultimately unique from everyone else.

I don't get it... if it's a 2-5-1 progression and D is 2 in this case, then why is the rootnote of the first note a C? Same goes for the second chord. I thought the rootnote of the second chord should be 5, which corresponds with G in this case. But then why is the rootnote of the second chord a B?

Yeah its fire, I guess its still 2-5-1. I ran the chords into Scaler 2, and it says this is I maj9 - VII B7#5 - iii E9 (sus4) - ii Dmin7 - V7 g7), that's a 1-5-3-2-5 chord progression. I need to study music theory further to understand this.
@jaimeverdugo

So is he wrong when he says he will use the Cmaj scale?
@ivansoto9723
@ivansoto9723 3 года назад
@@elcooljay1821 I think I figured it out. I used Hook theory, what I know, and the midi. Imaj9 - V#5/iii - iiimin11 no3 - ii7 - V7 Cmaj9 - B7#5 - emin11 no 3 - dmin7 - G7 The second chord, B7#5 is a secondary dominant with a sharpened fifth note going to the iii. The third chord or the iii11, is a minor eleventh. It's very common to omit the third in a minor eleventh chord to avoid clashing. So sum it up Secondary Dominant with #5---> Target minor 11th chord, with third omitted
@OdaKauffman
@OdaKauffman 3 года назад
@@ivansoto9723 lol way better than what I thought. Running it through some Chord Player I read Imaj9-VII7(#5)-ii6/B-ii-v. I'm stupid tho so my way of thinking was just matching up the notes to what chords it could be voiced into.

@GamerGriaBros
@GamerGriaBros 3 года назад
I sometimes use diminished or half diminished chords a half step above or below whichever chord I am going to. It does however creates a lot of tension. You can also use substitute chords. C major chord is essentially A minor for example. I’m still learning but starting to understand the relationships of chords. Options are limitless!! Good luck!

You are doing a "Quick 2-5-1" at the end to come back to CMaj9 (also called a turnaround), but your main progression is a 6-5-1 in E minor (your 3rd chord, which is the actual key), which is probably "the" most common progression in modern R&B ;) Cheers !

Invert doesn't mean to move up an octave. It just means changing what note is the bass note of the chord. C E G makes C Major. C Major 1st inversion is ECG or EGC. On a literal music theory level ALL inversion means is changing the bass note in the chord by an interval in the chord, as the definition shown described. However, these inversions will often lead to people rearranging other notes in the chord for different "voicings" in the inversions.
@ivansoto9723

The progression: I9 - V/iii(#5) - iii11(no3) - ii7 - V7 Cmaj9 - B7(#5) - em11 - dm7 - G7 Notes: -The second chord is called a secondary dominant. The #5 is called a tension note. It means that you are raising the fifth of the chord a semitone. -It is VERY common to remove the 3rd in eleventh chords, giving them a softer quality.

@jonplaysbass33

Yes because the Vth grade of the scale ( in this case G7 ) generates a sense of tension that needs to resolve, and almos always u wanna resolve on chords that are the opositte of tense, like the 1TH grade (C) or 3rd (E)...

It’s up to taste. a 2-5-1 can be the whole progression. like 2 for a measure, 5 for a measure, 1 for two measures. boom, you got a 4 bar progression. Or like this video, since the 1 is how the progression kicked off, at the end you can tag the 2 for half a measure followed by the 5 for the other half of the measure and then the loop ends real neat on the 1 when it starts over. you could even put a 2-5-1 in the middle if you found a place it felt good. no limits! just know that the 2-5-1 wherever you put it, will help deliver a soft, lush, jazz and r&b vibe. So if you want like a drill beat, prob won’t be your go-to chord progression.

@simbooooooooooo
@simbooooooooooo 3 года назад
Hey brotha, I’m not sure if this answers your question, but the easy way to match the 808s to the key is to first know what scale your sample is. For example, the scale I use was a C Major scale so you would use any note in the C major scale for your 808s. I hope that helped!

Okay so why B7 in the key of C major ? and also why the #5 ? It does sounds good but what is the actual reasoning to come up with this specific chord ? You clicked keys randomly until you found a good sounding chord? I have the same questions for the Bmin 7th : this chord is also not in the key so there must be some sort a logic to come up with it. Great video I understand the scale being C to C How was The 2-5-1 chord progression used to start the melody ? From my understanding each bar of notes represents a chord and the chord being 2-5-1 I would have put first note “ D “ then count the major 7 chord being a Dmajor 7 or 9th I need help understanding standing why we chose “C” The next chord was intense you chose to make it a D witch would be the 5 in the 251 chord progression The third chord was B minor 7 Then ended the loop with 2-5-1 that was the only point that made clear when it was in use I’m not sure how you chose these chords I mixing something together I bet if anyone can help explain this to me it would be ver helpful

In a 2-5-1, all this means is that in the melody, it will go from the 2, to the 5, to the 1, at some part of the progression. In this case, he starts with the 1, but the last two chords are the 2 and the 5, so when the progression is ending, it plays the 2, then the 5, then go back to the beginning which is the 1. Hope this helps
