Been getting into urban sketching lately(something I’ve been putting off for a while because of my abysmal sense of proportion), and I’ve been having a lot of trouble trying to get all the buildings to align after I finish drawing each part because I already make the lines either too vertical or too horizontal Never occurred to me that I should’ve just drawn a guide and use that as a starting point This helped a lot, thank you

You know that moment when, after 100 people have explained a concept to you, and then out of the blue that one person explains it in the exact right way for your brain to grasp it. Yes, just had that moment.

I had the first mistake happen to me just today lol. I had decided to sketch out a city scene and when I put a perspective grid over the top of my image to check it I had my roof and overhangs and windows at different angles lol!

Once we can see our mistakes, it’s not nearly as hard to correct them. Keep at it, it will all fall into place soon. 😀

There are multiple vanishing points depending on the angle of surface.

the thing i usually get wrong just because i never think about it is the distance between same size objects going towards a vanishing point, like windows, i always measure them equal distance when i should make them thinner and smaller distance between them the further away they get.

This is an easy error to fall into Robin. My videos on foreshortening are the ones which should help you most with this topic. I’ve just posted a video to celebrate my first million views on RU-vid with my considered top three tips from all the advice/ teaching that I’ve given in over 470 videos. Have a look if you’re interested. 😀

@@stephentraversart i have been, it's been great, i had a special moment with the videos explaining detail and how you don't have to be super accurate across the whole page when details become too much to manage, just giving the illusion of detail is enough. it's been probably the biggest roadblock for me to even start drawing environments and architecture, i could draw a house but i always felt like when it came to cityscapes that it became just overwhelming, likewise with nature scenes. it has also helped me seeing things differently reminding me what drawing and painting really is, i tend to draw everything a bit too literally, if i can see it i should represent it as i see it, but that's not really what i should be doing, and that detail explanation reminded me of what i should be aiming for and how i should approach my drawings and paintings. so for that i greatly appreciate your explanations, also congratulations on your million views, here's to many more 🙂

Your videos helped me so much to understand perspective better, which is something I've always struggled with in my drawings, so thank you! 🙏 Maybe its a dumb question, but does the principles for perspective work the same way no matter what you draw? Say if I wanna draw an animal for example. Or is there something more you have to take into consideration then?
@stephentraversart
@stephentraversart Год назад
Thanks Amanda. Yes, perspective applies to everything within view. It’s just that it’s more obvious with buildings if it’s not drawn correctly than most things. Think of the way a person looks differently if we’re looking down at then rather than straight on. That’s the perspective changing the form of the person according to the viewing position. Just as with buildings. Does this make sense?😀
