Hi there...I'm an over-60 rec player, and though I can't always practice on court due to access issues, I do make the effort to learn as much as I can from your coaching by doing lots of shadow swings, note taking, etc, at home. Trying to erase or change all those bad game habits now etched in my brain and muscle memory is certainly a challenge at my age, but your videos do encourage me. So when I do get to play (2x/week), which is also my on-court practice time, I do so with your lessons as my guide. Tennis is fun again! Just wanted to thank you and wish you well!

Good point about keeping tossing arm up... I have students do this for another reason, which is to be able to generate a smooth shoulder over shoulder service motion... If the player drops left arm too soon, then they won’t be able to get that all important shoulder over shoulder motion needed to generate a lot of swing speed and power...

Norman Heger good point Norman, as I mentioned there are a few other reasons you wanna keep that arm up but the reason I mentioned is not talked about.

Thanks for the advice , I should also try to look more at the contact point instead of the service box 😁👍
@JamesDavisakaRemguy

Absolutely correct! (re: looking at contact point on serves) I try very hard to do this, especially on 2nd serves. Whenever I don't, the ball winds up in the net. God, tennis is so easy! All you have to do is watch the ball onto the strings and leave your focus there for a fraction of a second after the ball leaves. Easy-peasy! (NOT!!)

I think the reverse is true too. you are stretching the other arm as much as you can too which --as stated-- helps with shoulder positioning. again, it is a mental image and good teaching is about simplifying as much as possible. I am a teacher. direction: straighten both arms.

Great video. I notice your wrist in ulnar flexion during the trophy pose. It looks like the wrist moves into radial flexion at the bottom of the racquet drop then back giving more snap and speed to the racquet head. It would seem to keep the wrist loose as well. Can you comment or create a video explaining this. Thanks

Thanks Jeremy for the nicely targeted lesson. I'm a coach based in Montreal. What are your thoughts about the step before the toss, i.e. the grip on the ball. I teach my players to nestle the ball at the base of the fingers (or the top of the palm), and then secure it gently with light pressure from the thumb. The purpose is to avoid creating tension in the fingers which may send the ball awry when released. I see at 1:26 that you favour a different grip, where the ball is placed in the fingers almost like a forkball in baseball.

Tim B. Hi Tim, thanks for the comment. I am not familiar about how baseball players hold the ball. I like to have my players put the center of the ball on the middle finger pads which I think is pretty much between the palm and the finger tips. Many players and especially coaches talk about putting the ball in the finger tips for various reasons although I find this to cause issues, especially so that it often causes players to release the ball too early making the ball go too far into the court. Sounds like you teach to hold the ball in a similar position.
@mikhail606
@mikhail606 4 года назад
@@FundamentalTennis My description was perhaps a little vague. I teach them not to use the fingertips at all, for the reasons you mention. I have them hold the ball at the padded third knuckle, i.e. where the palm meets the fingers. They press the side of the ball lightly with the thumb, and keep the fingers together, so the ball can leave the hand freely at the top of the arm motion. There is no need for any movement in the hand except a release of the thumb. Thanks especially for emphasizing the need to hold the arm for one beat the end of the toss. This makes all the difference to toss accuracy and to balancing of the body well just before the forward swing motion. (Monfils is a great example of this.)

Hello Jeremy --- Your videos are amazing! Thank you for your dedication to teaching --- well done video shots, precise and solid information, fun, and practical. I have heard, "Keep your left arm up to prevent hitting the ball into the net." Is this helpful or would it be better to concentrate on hitting up on the ball? I just watched the relax start to your placement/serve and it really makes sense.
@FundamentalTennis
@FundamentalTennis 4 года назад
Lin hello and thank you Lin. Yes, it is important to keep the non-dominant arm up long enough to help keep the body in sync and to hit up on the ball.

The longer your tossing hand is up, the longer your head stays up, which is very important.

I love this. One simple mnemonic to fix a smorgasbord of common problems. The beauty is no matter which or how many problems one has, we only have to think about one thing. It's brilliant!! Thank's in advance, I can't wait to try this out. I have a similar "trick" I use when I can: it's keeping your head down after the shot, you know, like Fed. This one little correction sends every ball over with pace, placement and spin - it's like magic. My question to you is: Why (oh WHY!) can't I do this every time? If I KNOW that I'm gonna hit great shots with it, why do I "forget"to do it all the time? What's my problem, Jeremy, do I have a deep-seated desire to fail?

James Davis hi James, are you saying you watch contact then keep your head/eyes looking at the ground after contact?
@JamesDavisakaRemguy
@JamesDavisakaRemguy 4 года назад
@@FundamentalTennis Wow, thanks for such a rapid reply! Uh, no - I mean "keep my head down" as in "don't pop your head up" and try to see where the ball is going. It means to keep your gaze fixed on the contact point until you've finished your stroke/follow-through. It's what Federer does on literally every shot. The man is a robot, I think even machines fail more often than he does.
@FundamentalTennis
@FundamentalTennis 4 года назад
James Davis The above video is about the serve so maybe you’re talking about a ground stroke? Because the serve you want to keep your head up, not down.
@JamesDavisakaRemguy
@JamesDavisakaRemguy 4 года назад
@@FundamentalTennis You are correct, Sir! My bad. I WAS talking about groundstrokes, which I mentioned in a sentence that I edited out. I said I try to fix my gaze on the contact point after the ball is struck, down for groundstrokes, up for serves. You can see why I edited this out now. My point remains: Why, if I KNOW that this is beneficial, do I constantly have to remind myself to do it? It's like forcing yourself to eat your peas, meal after meal after meal! Is there no end? P.S. I am NOT - repeat NOT - standing on a ledge as I write this with firemen gathering far below with a net. ( _Psychiatrists_ with a net maybe...)

@@FundamentalTennis I was talking about why I don't watch contact, but then I found your video "Watch Contact? How, Why and When (Drill Included) " and the clouds parted, a ray of sunshiny hope trickled through and a heavenly choir started singing. Perhaps I'm exaggerating a tad. The point is, I think I found my answer. Thank you Sir, you are a godsend!

Any difference if one places the ball on palm, middle of fingers or finger tips Jeremy?
