@@Stumoo Thats correct mate, he has a checkered past with his temper which he said he thought was caused after suffering an horrific injury to the head. We as a club (Newquay CC) did receive quite a bit of abuse for signing him up but everyone deserves a second chance and he came over and was absolutely brilliant; he coached the adult teams, the kids and the ladies/girls, he was at every training session, went to all the social events and was an absolute pleasure to have. I batted with him a few times (I'm a lower order batsmen) and he really copped a lot of chirp but never reacted once just got his head down and batted. I would certainly have him back. I think there is a difference between picking the ball up and chucking it back to the opposition (normally after having asked) and catching a ball that quickly after playing it, when it is not certain where it might go. The angle was unclear. For me if there is ANY chance (even small) that the ball is threatening the stumps then the fielding team has every right to sustain the appeal. Based on the angle we have its the correct choice, but if there were fielders at the side who could see the trajectory of the ball was forwards then that would be unethical. I had thought when I saw the title that it maybe had been a misinterpretation of the Hit Ball Twice rule which I've seen wrongly given a couple of times in village.

I think it was a mistake of Matt to have picked up the ball while it was bouncing like that, with that sort of bounce there can easily be backspin on the ball that could have it dribble towards the stumps. It was very likely never going to hit them, but in a league game I would never have just caught the ball like that and would have knocked it aside with my bat or leg. It is one thing to pick up a dead ball laying on the ground, it is different while it is still in motion. I do think it is very cheeky of the opposition to have the appeal upheld as it is 100% not in the spirit of the game, but in league cricket there are so many teams that play to win at almost all costs that I also think Matt just took a needless risk on this occasion.

As a fellow top order batsman who is also struggling for form, it is reassuring to know I'm not alone. Last season I had my best ever season scoring over 600 runs. This season so far in about 7 games i've managed less than 50 runs. Everything you said as a factor is definitely ringing true for myself. Personally, I believe it to be a combination of them all - technique struggles, mental stresses in daily life along with the early season weather issues we had which resulted in less than ideal batting tracks. I've accepted i won't reach the same heights i did as last year but i know runs will come. Patience and going back to basics are whats required and coming to the crease with a clear and relaxed mind i think are key. Runs will come Gareth, just stick at it.

I don't get the claim the appeal was not in the spirit of the game. Matt Carter handled the ball while it was still in front of the stumps, and before its bounce on landing could be determined. IMO, anytime the batsman catches the ball in the air, or even in motion (as opposed to picking a stationary ball up of the ground), appeal for handled ball is warranted and should be given.
@billyhoyle2780
@billyhoyle2780 Год назад
I think I’m this instance it’s a fair call. If the ball was stationary on the ground and he picked it up, I don’t think anyone would have a problem. I think the fact he grabbed it while it was still in the air is probably the reason the opposition thought it was a fair appeal.

Disagree. That was a bit dumb and actually a bit arrogant of the batsman. The ball "belongs" to the fielding side. The batsman should never touch it unless he asks the fielding side first to return it to the keeper when it's close and dead, for instance. In this case, that ball was very much "live" and no opinion about whether it was going to spin back on the stumps or not is relevant. The batsman took away that possibility, which is really poor judgment. The umpires were dead right, and so were the fielding side. I would have done exactly the same thing (and actually have long ago) because it was certainly the batsman's fault. Perhaps the batsman has learnt his lesson. I hope so!

As to the handling of the ball decision, yes well done umpires for giving it, they had no need to discuss it any further, however the umpires were playing the game with spirit and your opposition has every right to uphold it, there spirit doesn't come into question as they didn't need to be asked in the first place. You are making an assumption the ball wouldn't come back and hit the stumps or a fielder running in collecting the ball and running either batsman out, though it's a rare occurrence, the experienced batsman shouldn't handle the ball until it becomes dead, batsman error and correct outcome.
