Having money is probably the biggest advantage you can have in snowboarding. Woodward camps every year and pro coaches is something most riders only dream about. Good for him, he hit the lottery with families. Add an extreme love for snowboarding and a competitive drive made him ready to become a legend.
@Ryan_hey

I don't think he has much of a competitive drive. He simply has an innate drive to create. And create he most certainly does.

you sound salty. Sure the camps helped, but he showed a ton of promise before that.

Absolutely this. If he would've started at 18-21 when he made his own money I'm sure he would've been really good but not what he turned out to be. Can't do any winter sports as a kid unless your parents are making good money, let alone all the private camps and schools.
@friedsensei
@friedsensei 2 месяца назад
@@Tehyamz yeah people don't wanna admit this, nothing against zeb he's incredible. But you're absolutely correct he would probably just be a local legend and not a super star without the elite athletic academy, that's a way bigger factor than Woodward. I'm more familiar with the ski racing world and there's not one kid on the US/Canadian national team who goes to public school and only skis on the weekends. When i was competing in the late 2000's the kids who were really commited went to an athlete academy for 3 days of class each week, and 4 days on snow. This involves a mountain of extra homework and the tutoring to make it possible. So it's not like it's easy or any guarantee of success, but people don't wanna admit this path is just impossible for the vast majority of groms out there.

As a black person I would like to comment on the ski and snowboard community. I started going to Tahoe at 6 years old. Being black has never been an issue for me in the snowboard and ski community. In fact, going to Tahoe and other ski resorts has always been an escape for the bs of the modern world. I have even ventured out to Japan for snowboarding and it’s the same thing. No one gives a damn if you’re black, white, blue, green or purple. Can you shred? Are you having fun? Through snowboarding I have homies in Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, France and so on. Zeb said he didn’t even think about his skin color until he won ex games and that’s to the credit of the ski/snowboarding community and as a black man I second that statement
@verb0ze

This is usually true in things people do for fun. The thing that unites them is the passion, not their socio-economic background. It does become a thing only when it's put front and center in the media because of course they gotta make it about race and evoke emotions so they can make money ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@grinpiece3432
@grinpiece3432 2 месяца назад
@@verb0ze While it may be valid for soccer or whatever free things people do for fun, what reunites people in mountain ski resorts (or any expensive resort for that matter) is definitely their socio-economic background 🤷‍♂

You have to understand that a lot of black people simply are never exposed to the sport. I’ve definitely gotten stares at certain resorts. Whistler Canada mainly. Even when I’m with the all black ski club. Access plays a major role.

@grinpiece3432 it cost about $1k to get used gear and a season pass for the year. When I started 22 years ago we couldn't afford to stay at the resort either, we slept 4 to a 1 bed room at the cheapest motel we could find. If you have the passion for it, you'll find a way.

He took 2nd in “Intermediate Big Air SNB” as a young child… Luke Winkelmann took 1st who is arguably most stylish comp boarder! So cool to see NC kids killing it on Global Stage! XGames is about to kill the knuckle huck too with their judging. It shouldn't be big air lite. Don't have actual judges give the scores, have other riders or former pros give the scores based on style.
@friedsensei
@friedsensei 2 месяца назад
I'm not the first person to say it but they should have separate style events. It's not like dudes are just flailing around and looking horrible when they spin big. It is sick to spin 6 times off a huge jump with a decent grab, you don't wanna discourage that line of progression. But a lot of us also want to see big floaty style tricks and you really can't judge them against each other in any fair way. Let's just have an event for both of them. The olympics have a ton of disciplines within each sport, freestyle snow should have more than park/pipe/big air. Knuckle Huck was basically an attempt at a style contest but it didn't last very long. Jaaust eliminate the huck if you have no room for more events and make a style big air event, that kinda is what the Knuckle Huck was supposed to be in the first place.
@Crazysurferdude
@Crazysurferdude 2 месяца назад
@@friedsensei uhm sir. There is two events for this.... One is the knuckle huck and the other is Big Air... Ya know, the giant ramp and landing that forms the knuckle off of which they huck.... This is exactly the issue. It's becoming the same event when the knuckle huck is supposed to be for style. If you wanna spin and grab your ass off do it in Big Air. That's where that progression is being made and has been for the last 20 years.

@@NateJenkins3 look I regret getting involved in this discussion but you're exactly the kind of annoying person I was talking about. Of course you can't buy talent, but most of the time you must buy opportunity when it comes to alpine sports. Your platitudes are tiresome. We're not saying Zeb isn't unreal, we're just pointing out that it sucks other talented dudes will never get the chance. Snowboarding is too expensive, that's the point. The athletic academy with an equal split between snow and school, and summer camps on the glacier will run you 50k/yr easily, and you have to commit to that when the kid is young and could easily lose interest. This is hugely exclusive, I have a feeling you think Hendrix would sound good playing on a piece of driftwood and a clock radio while growing up in inner Mongolia.
