@Cam Robertson I was wondering that too. Maybe the director or writers are Danish. The actress, Stephanie something or other above, is Danish. Maybe that's why:-)
A perfect example of how the music defines the tone.. it's two people talking but you are on the edge of your seat. Seeing makes you understand, hearing makes you feel.
It's creepy to him. She naturally has a natural ability to read people, not in a literal way, but some people have a very strong intuition, and are very good at catching subtle body language. Elliot suffers from social anxiety and is paranoid, so this amplifies the way he feels threatened by her gaze.
@@diggarsa8614 Come on mate, don't you know that people can make mistakes while writing something? This was months ago, I probably didn't realize I already wrote "naturally". But go on and assume that people discovered the word "redundancy" thanks to you if it makes you feel better.
@@MissElisabelle I wasn't even disrespecting the bloke. Just correcting his English. Didn't call him an idiot or anything😂. Chill. Don't get you budgies in a twist
yea like when Mr Robot says he feels she can see him, I guess that's because she could see the small intervals in which his reactions would show on Elliot's face, the gaps when he "took over"
Notice how it zooms further away from his face and further in to her face to show how the levels of confidence and control of the discussion over time.
it also happened it Eliot's conversation with Krista, when he told her he hacked everyone, the camera went from the top of Eliot's head lower and lower and Krista's camera went from the bottom of her head upper and upper
Im here 4 years later, have no idea whats going on, did not know this show even existed, there's a cute girl, intense music, guy actor looks like he's stuck in some kind of made up world. Without context, I give this a solid 9/10.
@MuahahazZ if you have the time give this show a shot, season 1-3 is on amazon prime and if you log in with your cable provider on USA network you can watch season 4 which started this oct which is the last season of this series. (This is all true for the US idk about anywhere else)
Her possessiveness and loyalty toward Tyrell was rare to see on film these days. She was like a murderous stalker who married her prey, and the obsession never dulled, it just changed from "stalk" to "protect." Both creepy and somehow admirable. Also her obsession was a bit understandable, because Tyrell was (despite his evil and sadism and thirst for power) a unique man with vision, ambition, intelligence and skill. This series had some absolutely amazing characters.
@@rogaldydyly2763 I finished the series, and though I suspected what you said, those suspicions were discarded. Tyrell was an actual separate person... even though Seasons 2 and 3 suggested otherwise. Season 4 dismissed it.
She's that unnerving kind of attractive where you're pretty sure she's been created in a lab as part of some super soldier project or you're somehow a relative of John Connor and this is the latest terminator come to exterminate you.
She essentially HAS been created in a lab! She no longer looks completely human thanks to all the plastic surgery that she has had done to her face! Disgusting!
@@wangson it is difficult to realize but her look is really natural: you can find proof in her Instagram - child photos. Even lips are natural. Powerful genetics.
She is FRIGHTENINGLY beautiful. Mesmerizing and terrifying, all-at-once. I wonder if male Black Widow spiders feel this way about the females that usually end up eating them.
Baby actors are not particulary expensive they just have extremely short legal working hours in the industry so as long as a baby can be faked on screen it will be just to avoid the legal parafernalia around it
*spoils* I almost rage quit the show when she died. Like really? She went out like that? Literally the most interesting character on the show, and she got murked by sideman no.3 smh
@@lol-ot4pn to me her death was like divine karma, and I think that's what the writters aimed at, in the sense that she was suuuch a bitch she had it coming, basically asked for it
This is the scene that made me think "wait is her husband just another of Elliots personalities and she's totally used to it and in this scene is like oh you're Elliot today and not my husband"
Two npcs from skyrim oblivion discussing the whereabouts of a missing man. Edit: For all of the losers pointing out my mistake yeah I know it's supposed to be The elder scrolls, I left it like that because it's funny. You can shut up about it now.
Elliot IS TYRELL. The new season we find out that Elliot has another persona but don't know who it is. My guess is that he is Tyrell which is why she was acting strange here.
@Bill Smithwick DDS dude stop posting this nonsense. Tyrell isn’t an alter of Elliot’s you numbskull, how many times does it have to be debunked for ppl like you to get it through your head?
@@meatwadsprlte Can't be they were making Tyrell the new CEO but Whiterose is going to kill Elliot after "8 days." Everyone interacts with Tyrell by name. No one refers to Mr Robot by name they call him Elliot unless they know specifically they're conversating with Mr Robot specifically which is rare.
Imagine the producers sitting down to interview her at the beginning, and after her screen test they're like Deadpools bartender friend to her. I am sorry you are... *haunting.*
This scene is so unnerving because it reveals what Joanna truly is, a true psychopath. Elliot is great and reading people, we see this throughout the show, he knows what people's strengths and flaws are, etc. However, Joanna is arguably better at reading people and can clearly tell throughout the scene that Elliot is lying to her but ends up thinking he's probably not important (until s2 anyways). Joanna is also a master manipulator, we see her manipulate Tyrell and the bartender throughout the series, she is REALLY good at it. She is easily one of the smartest, most calculated characters in the show. So when you have the ultra paranoid Elliot who's already dealing with Shayla's death, getting off drugs, finding out Darlene is his sister, Mr. Robot isn't real, and you combine this with a woman that's scary as shit and instantly reads him like a book, Elliot is terrified by this. Since the scene is from his POV we get the very creepy and unnerving music as he panics and tries to escape her gaze. "I feel like she can hear us" essentially shows that Elliot knows that Joanna is extremely good at reading him. Brilliant scene!
the genius of this scene and why the music is so sinister is he is hacking right now, trying to social engineer, but shes is miles better at it than him, shes 10/10 hence how everything she does is manipulating. this is a battle of words, hence the music and her "ill kill you" and his "i feel like she can hear us" BECAUSE SHE CAN, a woman like her knows what youre thinking. beautiful scene, so much tension
The most amazing part i've found on reddit was that the power struggle between elliot and joanna is shown by slighthly changing the camera angles as scene starts to progress(elliot looks smaller and joanna gets a more close up shot) to depict how she is in control of the conversation, and making elliot more frightened as they keep talking more.
Its a true testament to the shows acting, writing and music that a mother with a baby looked and felt like a terrifying predator without saying anything remotely threatening.
Morten Willums - on Danish " hvis du har gjort ham noget så slår jeg dig ihjel" Make Google translate read it out loud and compare the sound if you are in disbelief
The scene is shot narrowly to give the effect of being stuck in a situation that u want to end. The depth of field is quite confusing because the background looks clear yet bleak. The director is really good
I miss this show. Especially her. Was very annoyed they killed her off early without developing her. The actress has a supreme command of the screen and her character was fascinating. She should have been in it until the end.
@@L_Lawliet1907 It was good in that sense, because it made it more real. I was just upset I never got to see her again. I'd like to know why she isn't more famous. I mean look at her ffs she's one of the sexiest women alive
@@FRVT0 At least you won't get too attached to her now. I was hooked and it was a real bummer when she died in such a stupid way. She should have been in it until the end. And then deserves her own TV show.
The face she makes when she gets close and says "thank you....Ollie" she knew, he wasn't hiding anything, she knew exactly who he was from possibly before that moment
She reminded me of evil. Like a person who allows evil to consume them and become themselves the embodiment of evil. I don't know if this is the same as a psychopath but she played it well.
In my opinion the creepiest scene is when Angela first tries to blow the whistle about the leaks from the power plant and this woman kindly asks her to walk down an ominous dark hallway to "answer a few questions". It creeped me out and gave me goosebumps. It was so obvious that had she chosen to do so, that death would be awaiting her.
I love how Sam Esmail lets his influences flow through him. This show is so interesting on quite a few different levels. The lighting, color, camera work, editing. The writing! The respectful and clever references to other works, and characters that feel like a portal to the writer's personality (especially with those cameos lol). I feel like I'm just scratching the surface. This was an ambitious series, and I think there are parts that someone could say were a bit wobbly but overall this will remain somewhere close to the top of my list of favourites. Thanks for letting me speak!
I always enjoyed after each episode there was a huge discussion group on Facebook about the episode and trying to figure out what was going on. Kinda like how everyone is discussing this scene in particular in the comments
@@SourDiesel69 i was with a woman .she was really goodlooking and beautiful so when she asked me questions i was just fricked up by that and cant talk and then i realized its not that first time i was faced those kind of thing before and i always thought about them they r reading my mind or something and wants to eat me.(sorry for bad english its not my first language)
Elliot suffer from DID, mr. robot is one his personalities. However I believe that Tyrel is the original host but he himself doesn’t know it. However his wife being aware of his disorder, noticed he wasn’t his normal self so he asked who he was, and he was unable to give an actual answer which is why he said “it feels like she could hear us”.
I really love all the comments regarding the music. Scoring a film, T.V. or short film is never an easy task. The importance of music is so essential in the media of film and T.V., it basically is another actor in the genre.
The fact is the directing is beautiful in this scene. You can see that elliot definitely has the upper hand by the camera angle and how close it is to his face to represent the dominance, but as the scene goes through, the camera steps back from elliot and gets closer and closer to Joanna. Especially in the last scene its brilliant.
Not going to lie: I clicked because the lady looked beautiful and the title intrigued me. I know nothing about this show, so I watched it without context. The music was so unsettling, the woman's gaze made me feel a little sick, the man's reluctance was anxiety inducing. Add to that: can't confirm if that's a baby in her hands or a weapon. This feels like straight up horror and I LOVE IT
2 years late but same here. With no context, I assumed supernatural powers or some induced state of surrealism. She was giving me uncanny valley vibes sometimes, so eery
This scene really shows how extremely important it is to have right music for your scenes to perfectly portray the scene.. Watching this without the music c would simply be like watching a social awkward guy with a beautiful woman. But the way that the music is pushing up the pressure and overall creepiness if the scene is amazing.
I know this is a scene from a show and something sinister was going on, but this is how social anxiety feels. Fight or flight mode, always, even if someone is just asking you the time. The silences while trying to navigate a conversation are conpletely menacing, and your thoughts feel so loud and jumbled that it really seems like people can hear them and that you're panicking inside.
That kiss on the doll-baby at the end tho. If I were Elliot and had eyes on the back of my head, I'd be running waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay away from her. Good acting.
I always identify such people as psychopaths, they don't seem "awake" or "realize" that what they're doing is creepy and is instantly giving them away. Corneliussen nailed this acting at +120%, respect.
I feel like she knows his third personality, and that's why she's acting so weird, because she realizes he's acting like someone else; that he's not the person she knows. Maybe the other personality even knows Danish, and that's why she says that to him, almost as a test -- and to ensure that if he's lying and it IS the right personality that she's talking to, he can understand her.
I've always wondered whether or not Tyrell is genuinely real but it's too hard to string that theory together, there's no way Elliot would have the time to be Tyrell as well, his face is all over the world and the police were looking for him while Elliot was in jail. It would take a huge amount of explaining for them to be the same person but Tyrell has always been an odd character. The way he just goes off in the last episode we saw him in was suuuper weird too.
@@mrcheesemunch The idea of Tyrell being being one of Elliot's alters is a really interesting one, but you're right -- it's too far fetched, unless there's more we don't know about. His character IS really odd, and that ending was equally as bizarre for sure. With only 4 episodes left, at least we should have our answers soon. Hopefully. It's so bittersweet.
This woman was creepy because of the mystery around her. However, we find out her motives are shallow and simple. She makes mistakes trying to manipulate people and dies in a pathetic way because of it. She wasn't creepy at all. She was quite sad. Creepiest thing? The show proves her to be a psychopath. Yet, her motives are that of love.
I always found the cinematography weird but somehow fascinating in this show how it places the shots around characters' faces, not focusing entirely on them like we're used to, leaving much background space on screen. Is it just me or did anybody else notice this?
I love how well done this scene is. Something feels so off about EVERYTHING in the scene. Elliot is in control in the beginning then very quickly hes in danger. You even feel like him and start looking over his shoulder for anything that could happen next. Just a hint to find out the piece of what is so wrong in this scene. Its amazing.
One of my favorite scenes of this show is when they throw red paint on her and her baby, and then it goes mute and title pops up and it's just her screaming her head off. Creepy af
At the end you can clearly see a change in brightness. Is this related to the sense of relief? Is this some sort of camera trick directers use to target our subconscience? Please let me know!
The soundtrack is inspired on "Under The Skin - Death". A movie with Scarlett Johansson and everytime I hear the soundtrack, I get chills down my spine.
Elliot is her husband's alter. She is literally talking to her dissociated husband. That's why she's so in control. Elliot doesn't understand he's her husband's alter.
that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense given that elliot has an entire life before he meets either of them. i didn’t see the last season but yeah i really can’t imagine the show pulling that same twist off twice.
@@obscure.reference go back and rewatch it from that perspective. The whole show. You will start to see it. Pretty amazing, ngl. Also deleted scenes confirm it.
The creepiest thing i hadnt noticed abt this scene before is that the woman's face gets closer and closer to the camera with every few cuts. No wonder it felt so uncomfortable watching her
Honestly i think its 9/10 the amazing music that makes this scene “creepy”, its such an incredible piece of ominous, eerie music perfect for a thriller or horror movie
And right now he felt again in the Anonymity again. Getting thoose likes with an old bad joke horribly placed will be the greatest thing he will ever do ahah. Poor Karios. Mama is proud x)
1) He did not find an inconsistency in her story..yes she said that she had spoken to him on the phone 10 minutes ago, but then later said it’s been 3 days since she’d actually seen Him. I mean she probably was lying, but technically not. 2) Huge continuity issue..as the dude in the background is walking up behind the guy, when the camera pans to Her, the guy never passes her. I guess He vanishes? 3) She is one of the most seductively beautiful and mesmerizing women I have ever seen in My Life! Those eyes WOW! Who IS She?! Wheww
The fact that that season 4 finale deleted scene revealed Tyrelliot theory was correct makes this scene the most insane shit i didnt see coming even years after this show ended
