Also guys keep in mind that after a while and especially during break in the middle part of the conrod get's stressed really bad. And while the bushings may look good and have no play the metal of the rod itself can also degrade because of the stress and causes metal fatigue and hence the rod snaps in half. That's why I always recommend to change rod after break in and especially when you bash like I do :P

You gotta make sure those vintage engines have working rods because you can't buy a new vintage OS engine!

Dont forget your big end pen on your crank also may get worn out.

Yeah I will mention that in a different video or make a part 2. The wristpin and crankpin although these don't wear as quickly also need replacing when they are no longer round

@@NitroMike they will become oval due to a worn conrod or lag of oil. There is a tolerance for. Also for conrod play

@@cnnlt200 I know I should have mentioned the wristpin as well. The crankpin survives in most cases and if it doesn't you have to replace the whole crank. The main things that break are wristpin and conrod bushings

@@NitroMike i can remember my rb concept ws7 2 that had a worn pin. It's common. Normally the biggest reason to replace the conrod is the stress. I replaced the rod and noticed still alot of play

@@cnnlt200 If a worn crankpin is common I would buy a different engine. I am not replacing an expensive crank & get it modded after less than 4 gallons lol that is gonna cost me a fortune

Hi nitro Mike i have a problem i bought this os max 15cv-x and I think the rod is bad so I stripped it and there is nowhere near as much play in it as there is in the rod in your video. When pulling the starter you can hear a clicking sound at first i though it was a bad rod but after inspection the engine was totally dry no lube so i lubed it up with pure caster oil its much better now and i am not sure if the clicking sound was something to do with the starter shaft that the one way bearing sits on. I cannot test it at the moment because i need a fly wheel and engine mount spacers but i will let you know how i get on with it if you like.

How much play is acceptable? I have a Kyosho GXR18SP and I see some play (around half an mm). My cylinder is already kind of scarred (from a previous conrod failure) so should I replace it right now as even a conrod is expensive and the parts for this engine are hard to find so I don't want to waste this conrod which is fairly new. Are there some other indicators of when I should replace it as I've heard some play is normal. So how much is two much? Anyways thanks for the great video!

My engine just broke down. It was the connecting rod bearing. Had run only 5 liters. Bought a new one for 18 euros

After break in you only have like 5 liters on the conrod for most engines. I like to switch the rod inmidiately so I don't have to worry about the conrod possibly being weak and break

I have heard Novarossi,Alpha,Argus rods will fit. Im not 100% sure but I read something like that on RCTech.com.

I buy most of mine from ebay but every manufacturer should have them in their parts list and I believe A-main sells also a lot of conrods

I always have a spare rod for every engine I own because you never know when to replace one and it can ruin your day when the rod decides to go bad the day before you go to an event

@@donfoss45 I highly recommend you do before Novarossi or LRP goes bankrupt because of this Covid virus and you can no longer find parts for the engines

I'm getting back into nitro and have never rebuilt an engine. Is it difficult? And is a Traxxas engine even worth it. Traxxas will give you half off on a new engine of you trade in the old one. I also found a great deal on a savage X 4.6. Any aftermarket recommendations for that one?
